WHS llwaco , Their first game was at the Trico League iamboree in which they WHS Valley played and lost to a highly-rated Kalama team, 35-O, in one half. As far as everyone was concerned, except the Mules and Coach Patterson, this WHSAA ' Kalama was another cellar-dwelling year for the small and inexperienced WHS. Naselle Mvles' WHS south Bend The Mules lost two more games to llwaco and Valley fthe latter win- WHS Ocosta ning the Pacific County League championshipl by the score of 46-6 'and 40-19. However, the Mules were beginning to show some spunk which the Cathlamet fans hadn't caught wind of yet. The Kalama game, to most people, was going to be a pitiful slaughter in their eyes, but Coach Patterson's fired-up Mules played like champions and led the Chinook gridmen up until the final quarter before losing out, 19-32. But this was a new team! And they proved it by winning their next three ball games in a row, trouncing Naselle 46-O, edging South Bend 2l-20, and beating Ocosta T9-6 to cop third place in the Pacific County League and earn the respect of all the football fans in the new league.
