FOOTBALL SEASON SUCCESSFUL Rising from the dark shadows of the last two years the'Wa-Ki-Hi Mules' football team tied with Castle Rook for the Championship of the new cross- county league. This league is the largest football conference Wa-Ki-Hi has ever entered and is made up of ten UBU teams. The ten teams are: Wa-Ki-Hi, Castle Rock, Kalama, Toledo, Winleck, Rochester, Onalaska, Tenino, Mossyrock, and the State Training School. These teams have been molded into one of the strongest leagues in southwest Washington. At the beginning of the season the Mules did not look like a championship squad. As the season progressed the Mules showed steady improvement. Wa- Ki-Hi won nearly all games by slim margins having their largest margin against Tenino in a 20-O game. Only two teams were able to cross the Mules' goal lineg these were the State School and Castle Rock. Each crossed just once and the total score against Wa-Ki-Hi for the year was a mere 13 points. On the other side of the score sheet Wa-Ki-Hi made a total of lO6 points against their opponents. The hmles' team averaged about 155 pounds. Most of this weight was carried in the backfiold and on the right side of the line. Only once were they out-weighed, and that was by Castle Rock. The Mules offensive attack was built around Ed Quigley and Tony Amelia the fullback and left halfback re- spectively. Amelia and Pete Johnson did most of the passing, and Mike Gorman and Cliff Nielson, the two ends were on the receiving end of these passes. Pete Johnson and Cliff Nielson made names for them- selves with their outstanding punting. Mike Gorman had a good extra point record and kicked six out of seven attempts. The rest of the team took the un- sung duties. Running the interference and taking hard knocks were the lineman. Especially on de- fense they deserved the credit for holding their opponents to 13 points. The team will lose the following seven players by graduation: Captain Mike Gorman, Tony Amelia, Ole Arness, Ted Jacobsen, Marvin Althauser, Manley Minsker, and Tommy Irving.
