No one could accuse the black students of banding together in a large voting block to push Sharon into royalty. There are only 83 black students at Wagner this year among 2400 undergraduates who were eligible to vote. This increased awareness among all college students has led to the election of several black students to the College Council. The black stu- dents Qmost of whom, like Sharon, are members of Black Concernj are more optimistic this year - they are more successful socially, have more unity, and have found more persons on the campus Willing to help. Sharon is taking part in a pro- gram that the black -students at Wag- ner have coordinated with the col- lege's admissions office. The effort is to recruit more qualified black students from environments much like the one that Sharon was a part of. The visits of admissions officers to these areas are coordinated with the black student's vacation period so that a team might enter where only one went before. Each black student will be an ex- ample to those who are discour- aged but determined to aim at the college career. I'll be returning to Girl's High, Sharon explained. lf you fight hard enough, you can do it. I think my sister learned that from me. She, too, Wants to come to Wagner next year. Sharon's career so far has proved the confidence that she, as well as others, had in her capabilities. She is a resident assistant in the wom- en's dormitory this year and a mem- ber of the Student Nurse Fellow- ship. VVhile not quite a Dean's List student, Sharon has been an honor student in her major. .V .,..,, X
