Sharon can't explain why llef marks dipped when she started high school. In junior high school hef grades were good and she was sO- cially involved in the school's activ- ities. But things started moving downhill when she entered Girl's High. She believes she was accepted at YVagner almost solely on the recom- mendation of her counsellor and the Mfagner admissions officer who visited the school. Wagner was my first choice among the four colleges I wanted to attend. I was looking for a baccalaureate nursing program at a college with a rural setting, not far from a large city, and not far from my home. Mfagner was all that I wanted. The college pieced together a system of loans, grants, and nursing scholarships to finance Sharonls education. In addition she enrolled in the college work-study program, and worked summers as a nurses' aide. Then, Queen Sharon became Pfc. Sharon when she was accepted in the U.S. Army student nurse pro- gram. The program pays its candi- date's tuition and offers a salary which goes toward room and board. Sharon will be commissioned a sec- ond lieutenant in January of her senior year and serve three years with the Army nurses after her graduation. During those three years she will study towards a mas- ter's degree either in midwifery or psychiatric nursing. As little as a year ago, a black coed would have had little chance in the homecoming queen election, Sharon feels. Today at Wagner there is a greater concern among the students, a greater awareness - more thought is being given to things that could be better. I think it is an outgrowth of the student strike ta week-long, non-violent strike by students in early March 1969 that listed numerous academic and social changesj. People on campus started thinking abgut thingsg they started talking to each other. Probably no one other than sorority members really knew about how to nominate a home- coming queen candidate, for ex- ample. , '47' My 1-,cf .....NX 'w Y . . i 1 -'-ffl-b 'SQ'-' 3.5-P QW! 2 ls N' - -1.-.c - me f QQ! . 1, -S ft. -he gg, .IQ , , se . ...QQ 'Nt i SX?
