BASKETBALL The Wagner College basketball team, playing against many of the top teams in the East, posted a l5-I2 record for the l95l -1952 season. Although the team failed to annex the Greater New York Conference championship for the first time in three years, it went on to greater glory by winning the First Annual Hofstra Invitation Tournament. Coach Sutter, with the nucleus of last year's highly successful team back in the persons of Bob Bosley, Larry Sweeney, and Don Gromisch, was neverthe- less forced to find replacements for big George Blomquist and Bob Mahala, whose departure virtually nullified Wagner's rebounding strength, and Ray Doody, the playmaker of last year's club. lt was a freshman, Charlie Harreus, who more than filled the bill as a big man, leading the rebounding department with a season's total of 349, while tallying 243 points. Doody's place was filled by Al Frolander, a senior, who was the number one Seahawk in shooting percentage. Don Gromisch once again held down the center position, and for the sec- ond straight year averaged over l2 points a game, The tall pivot man closed out his college career with 800 points. Larry Sweeney, the Seahawks' 'team man,' completed his fourth year of Varsity competition in splendid style. The team captain led the club in assists, although missing the last four games, and steadied the team with his cool playing. Lionel Rotelli, along with Frolander, played the outside position in the Seahawks' offense. Rotelli's ,defensive wizardry made him especially valuable in the waning moments of close games. Frolander was the third top scorer with the best eye on the club. ln the individual records department, Bob Bosley was in a class all by himself. Bob broke the all-time Wagner scoring record as he reached the 963 point scoring mark after three years of play. The blond junior set a new sea- sonal standard with 466 tallies, albeit missing three games, and the single game total of 35 points, against Brooklyn Poly. He received the Most Valuable Player awards in the Hofstra Invitation tournament and in the St. Peter's game, and was honorably mentioned on the All-Met basketball team. The high mark for the Seahawks was unquestionably the Hofstra tourna- LARRY SWEENEY HERB SUTTER ' 3 Captain Coach 'ff AL FROLANDER A V Q35 fi 'ei' VI r ll 1 1. Other noteworthy achieve- ents were the opening of the newly completed Wagner gymnasium, an all- ime seasonal scoring record set by the Seahawks, the nine-game winning treak which was the longest in the school's basketball history, as well as agner's last second two-point loss to powerful Fordham, and the 65-58 riumph over St, Peter's in the season's finale. The J. V. amassed its best' record in years, as it chalked up fourteen ins as against six setbacks. Like the Varsity, it ran up a nine straight victory kein in mid-season. Outstanding performances for the J. V.'s were turned in y the high-scoring Bruce Thompson, an unusually lithe operator, and a ertain Varsity regular next year, as well as Buddy Takach, Gus Merkel, arl Borchers, Burt Clinton, John Mangiante, and Joe Russell.
