They are mines worked out: I delved in their pits I have saved their grain of gold. Now I turn to the future for wine and bread: I have bidden the past adieu. I laugh and lift hand to the years ahead: Come on: I am ready for you! 5 I is ,xxxx il ,,,, 1' iii viii -gi - lledication The total enrollment has tripled. The assets have more than doubled. A new gymnasium and girls' dormitory, along with eighteen acres of property, have been added. Numerous accreditations, approvals, and authorizations have beentonferred by official groups on various phases of academic activity. Many important and necessary positions in the Administration have been created. And so on for many and many a line. All of the above statements, and many more, have been realized at Wagner during the six yealts and some odd months of Dr. Walter C. Langsam's presidency, which ended on January twenty-first of this year when he resigned to accept the presidency of Gettysburg College, Pennsylvania.. Since Novelrhber, l945, Dr. Langsam has been striving to advance Wagner in the three- so 1 fold vein of sizegeiquality, and scope. With ability, personality, and perseverance, he has suc- ceeded far past anyone's expectations. We of the l952 Kallista respectfully dedicate this book to Dr. Langsam as a memorial upon departure, knowing full well, however, that there is a far greater memorial extant about us. ltimay be found by following the advice of that oft-quoted phrase, Let's look at the record. i MRS. Kappa Sigma Alpha Fraternity was organized in l93l for the express purpose of promoting the loyalty of its brothers to Wagner College and of effecting a greater realization and at- tainment of their scholastic, cultural, and spiritual ideals. The underlying fraternal feeling is based on the desire to produce a closer relationship and a deeper consideration and understanding among the students at Wagner College. lt is the cosmopolitan spirit which pervades the activities of the fraternity at all times. Demonstrating its extra-curricular as well rl W 1 as its scholastic interest, the fraternity presents three awards annually: The Kappa Sigma Alpha award in education, the Kappa Sigma Alpha award to the year's most outstanding player on the Wagner College football team, and the Gordon Lathrop Scholastic Cup. The group annually sponsors a semi-formal dance, a Founder's Day banquet and a May Day social. The fraternity dances, which feature continuous music, are well known for their unusual and exotic decorative effect. The reactivation of the Kappa Sigma Alpha Alumni Association in l95l has added to the strength of the group in the attainment of its ideals. 99 Brothers Kappa's Homecoming float. The team's depletion was brought about by a continuous string of injuries from the outset of the season, and therein lies the story of the Seahawk eleven for l95l. The team, which won two games and dropped six, received its first setback when Johnny Schick, regular end, suffered a serious kidney in- jury before the opening game and was lost for the season. After taking the first game from Arnold by a l9-7 score, the Seahawks then lost Bill Kummer, who incurred a damaged spinal column, Al Tosi, with a dis- located ankle, and Bob Klumpp, whose nose was broken. Successive in- juries to Clem Bosco, promising freshman fullback, Bob Evans, and Harry Kummer further limited Wagner's potency. But the severest blow of all to the team was the loss of halfback Neil Leonard, whose arm was fractured in the Penn Military game. Pre-season grid expectations were fairly hopeful on the campus, as a seasoned group of veterans and some highly touted frosh prospects re- ported to Coaches Howell and Bunny Barbes. Hopes remained high after the opening game victory over Arnold, but it soon became apparent that an insufficient number of reserves would invariably lead to injuries to key players. Thus, it was lack of depth, rather than ability, which cost the Seahawk gridders a successful year. Neverthless, the 'Sl season witnessed the development of Neil Leonard into a great ball carrier. Although the team failed to annex the Greater New York Conference championship for the first time in three years, it went on to greater glory by winning the First Annual Hofstra Invitation Tournament. Coach Sutter, with the nucleus of last year's highly successful team back in the persons of Bob Bosley, Larry Sweeney, and Don Gromisch, was neverthe- less forced to find replacements for big George Blomquist and Bob Mahala, whose departure virtually nullified Wagner's rebounding strength, and Ray Doody, the playmaker of last year's club. lt was a freshman, Charlie Harreus, who more than filled the bill as a big man, leading the rebounding department with a season's total of 349, while tallying 243 points. Doody's place was filled by Al Frolander, a senior, who was the number one Seahawk in shooting percentage. Don Gromisch once again held down the center position, and for the sec- ond straight year averaged over l2 points a game, The tall pivot man closed out his college career with 800 points. Larry Sweeney, the Seahawks' 'team man,' completed his fourth year of Varsity competition in splendid style. The team captain led the club in assists, although missing the last four games, and steadied the team with his cool playing. Lionel Rotelli, along with Frolander, played the outside position in the Seahawks' offense. Rotelli's ,defensive wizardry made him especially valuable in the waning moments of close games. Frolander was the third top scorer with the best eye on the club. ln the individual records department, Bob Bosley was in a class all by himself. Bob broke the all-time Wagner scoring record as he reached the 963 point scoring mark after three years of play. The blond junior set a new sea- sonal standard with 466 tallies, albeit missing three games, and the single game total of 35 points, against Brooklyn Poly. He received the Most Valuable Player awards in the Hofstra Invitation tournament and in the St. Peter's game, and was honorably mentioned on the All-Met basketball team. The J. V. amassed its best' record in years, as it chalked up fourteen ins as against six setbacks. Like the Varsity, it ran up a nine straight victory kein in mid-season. Outstanding performances for the J. Victories were racked up against St. John's University, St. Joseph's, Rider College, Queens, and Equitable Life Insurance, as the girls won five games and dropped a like number. Il5 EIL-Q H ' ..c 1 The 1951 edition of the Wagner baseball team compiled a highly creditable record, showing thirteen victories as against seven losses. After dropping seven of their first nine games, the Sea- hawks trounced St. John's, 7-3, at Dexter Park, L. l., which proved to be the turning point of the season, as they bounced back to win all of their remaining eleven contests. Keynoting this undefeated string of games was the superb pitching of Ziggy Wachsmuth and Don Finley, who 'ecorded earned run averages of 1.29 and 1.6, resuectively. This duo, bolstered by the ad- dition of Joe Russell, allowed an average of less than five hits per game, and limited the opposition to a .185 team batting average, Wachsmuth led the pitching staff with a record of 7-2, contributing im- portant wins over St. John's, N. Y. U., and Manhat- tan while setting the pace in s-trikeouts, complete games and innings pitched. Leading the squad in hitting with a .318 batting average was Al Frolander, who also stole the most bases, 11. Following closely was- Neil Leonard, who hit .31 1, stole seven bases, and had the highest slug- ging average, .431. Burt Helgeson led the team in homeruns and held down the first base position, while Don Silva captained the club from the hot corner. The con- sistent performance of Bob Weber, whose 15 R.B.l.'s was tops, and Lionel Rotelli around the key- stone strongly contributed toward Wagner's driving finish, while Sal Espos-ito's team play, and the capable handling ot the pitchers by Dan Natarelli LEFTY GEARHART Assistant Coach 116 also were instrumental in the Seahawks' diamond success last season. Highlights ot the campaign included a one- hitter against St. Peter's in the opening game, the tide-turning victory over St. John's in mid-season, as well as 2-1 and 1-O Conference triumphs over N. Y. U. and Manhattan. Entering the Metropolitan Baseball Conference for the first time, the Suttermen turned in a com- mendable job while consistently playing against top- notch competition. Finishing fourth in a loop composed of nine teams, the Wagner nine can look forward to another successful season, with only Don Silva, who has graduated, absent from the regulars. Entered in eleven meets, the Wagner cindermen were severely handicapped by the lack of practice facilities and, consequently, could record but one victory, and that over Jersey City Junior College. ln dual meets, the squad lost to Hofstra, Mont- clair, St. Peter's, and C. C. N. Y., and was defeated by Fairleigh-Dickinson and Brooklyn Poly in its only triangular event. George Kenyon, Chuck Rockefeller, George Scheitlin, and Ed Weinburg represented Wagner in the Seton Hall Relays at South Orange, New Jersey, while John Paven, Bill Oster, Scheitlin and Rocke- feller comprised the mile relay squad which com- peted in the Penn Relays at Franklin Field, Philadelphia. The Wagner tracksters finished fourth in the Greater New York Conference Track and Field championships at Kings Point, Long Island, but failed to place in the Metropolitan Small Colleges-' Meet or in the Middle Atlantic States Champion- ship Meet. ll8 The squad's leading scorers were George Ken- yon and Dick Wasrnund, closely followed by Captain Ted Lovington, the team's sole four-year man, and Bill Roehrich. Other members of the team were Marv Lepaw, Don Graves, Mal Tjorohom, Don Juliano, Jordan Davis, Fred Geils, Rolf Mielzarek, and Manager Jim Keller. Since the Seahawk netmen organized in l9-49, they have compiled an overwhelming 23-6 record. Having lost four lettermen through graduation, the l95l season did not look very promising. Nevertheless, paced by returning veterans Pete Landis and Captain Ralph Powelson, with the addition of Rebel Anderson and letter- men Bob Snedeker and Nat Webster, the Wagner squad smashed out impres- sive victories over C. C. N. Y., Manhattan College, and a strong Kings Point team, among others. Powelson, meeting the top players in the East, won all but two of his matches, while Landis, playing in the number two singles pos-ition, had an un- defeated season. Anderson, third man on the team, showed an 8-3 record, while Snedeker took seven out of eleven matches, and Webster chalked up five wins. The Seahawks' first doubles combination of Powelson and Landis won all of its encounters, and was the deciding factor in at least three of Wagner's triumphs. The remainder of the team was composed of Bill Kerr, Bud Garretson, Hilty Shapiro, and Gene Long. llfiilitllfn riff DTQMSTTED BEF O pl,llv'l.
