RAY DOODY Captain Y I A 1-if iw HE RB S UTTE R Coach S.. .y i BOB BOSLEY Guard T, LARRY SWEENEY 124 KETB LL The Wagner College basketball team for the 1950-'51 season compiled a very enviable record, winning eighteen and losing seven for the second best record in the colleges history. The highlight of the season was the winning of the Greater New York Conference Championship for the second consecutive season. Coach Herb Sutter was not optimistic about his club,s chances before the season's start. He had but three men with varsity experience returning for the ,50 season. Some- one had to replace Iim Gilmartin and lay Quintana, former Wagner stars. For the pivot position Sutter looked towards Don Gromisch, a junior who had spent two years performing with the jay Vees. To say that Gromisch filled in adequately would be an understatement. His main forte was an amazingly accurate left-handed hook shot. By the end of the year Don had compiled 403 points, an all time Wagner record. His field goal percentage was 51.8, one of the best percentages in the nation. The three veterans on the club were Ray Doody, who served as Captain, Larry Sweeney, and Bob Bosley. Doody played his fourth year of varsity basketball and played it well. His ball handling and defensive play were outstanding, while offensively he scored 276 points this season. Playing in more winning basketball games than any other basketball player since Wagner began the court game, his four year total of 921 points is an all time Wagner high. Bosley, the team,s second high scorer, netted 324 points. On offense he stayed outside with Doody most of the time. A colorful performer throughout the season, Sonnyv possessed a variety of shots which made him difficult to guard. Sweeney, playing his third year with the Seahawks, turned in the best perform- ance of his career this season. Third in team scoring with 297 points, his scoring ability plus his hustle under the boards and his ability to be in the right place at the right time were deciding factors in many Wagner victories. The fifth position on the team was divided between two very promising freshmen, Bob Mahala and George Blomquist. Mahala, 6'3,', and Blomquist, 6'5 , provided valuable rebounding strength for the Seahawks all season long. The other members of the squad, Burgis Coates, Al F rolander, Chubby,' Hanni- gan, and Don Finley, gave Coach Sutter valuable reserve strength. Coates and Hanni- gan are seniors while F rolander and Finley still have additional seasons in which to play. Coates, a good ball-handler, played occasionally in the pivot. Frolander, the fastest man on the squad, did very well on the fast breaking type of offense. Hanni- gan, primarily a set-shooter, was an asset against tough zone defenses while Finley showed promise of better things to come with some fine driving shots. All seven of the Seahawk losses came on away games. The Seahawks have lost only one contest in a two year period at the Curtis High School Gymnasium which served as a home court. Although Curtis filled the need for a court very adequately, everyone connected with the team will be glad to see the new gymnasium in operation at the start of next season. .
