Robinson Mr. Herbert Sutter Mr. Frederick Willecke The brotherhood of Sigma Delta Phi, the first fraternity at Wagner College, was or- ganized on May 6, 1923, by five men who desired a closer bond of fellowship. The ideals expressed in the original con- stitution, scholastic achieve- ment, effective participation in the extra-curricular activi- ties of the campus, and a f true spirit of fellowship and brotherhood, are still the criteria by which prospective members are adjudged. Sigma believes that all students attend college primarily for an education, and therefore refuses to encourage those who are remiss in this vital aspect. Accordingly, XVagner, as the Alma Mater, is first in the hearts of the brothers. Toward that end, the fraternity has instituted an annual award to the outstand- ing student in the English department, and has reactivated the Herbert Holter Memorial Plaque for excellence in athletics. The recent CHEY drive was gen- erously supported by both the Active and Alumni chapters of the fraternity. An annual dance is sponsored by Sigma for the enjoyment of the entire Stu- dent body, as Well as several rush socials each year. Last years dance at the Boulevard Hotel was a huge success in terms of attendance and enjoyment. The brothers have also taken the initiative in sponsoring a bus to several of the away football games, enabling many to see the games who otherwise could not have attended. Although the 1950 graduation removed twenty-four of the active brothers, the fraternity maintains close ties with its alumni group. By frequent joint meet- ings of the officers of the actives and the alumni, interest is not only stimulated in the welfare of the fraternity, but also in the affairs of XVagner. An annual convention highlights each spring, presenting an opportunity for the actives to meet older brothers, and returning these men to Sigma and to NVagner. Sigma Delta Phi is a democratic brotherhood where individuality and free- dom of expression are of paramount importance. Inner assent has always been substituted for external compulsion and authority. Unquestioning acceptance and respect for the otheris opinions have developed and matured Sigma men to the point where they are effectively prepared for the outside world. Blanken Dr. Ida G. Everson Mrs. Adolph Stern Gamma Pi, chapter of Alpha Delta Pi, celebrates its first year on the Wagner College campus. This group, first a local sorority, Tau Lambda Chi, affiliated with Alpha Delta Pi in May, 1949, and now enjoys the distinction of being the first national soror- ity on the hill. The sisters of Tau Lambda Chi were inducted into Alpha Delta Pi on May 6, 1950. The induction was followed by a ceremonial dinner at the Richmond County Country Club. While Gamma Pi observes its first year at Wagner, Alpha Delta Pi celebrates its centennial as the oldest sorority in the United States. College education for women was still an innovation when the Adelphian Society was founded on May 15, 1851, by a group of girls at XVesleyan College, Macon, Georgia. It was, however, not until 1904 that Alpha Delta Pi really began expanding on a national scale. Today Alpha Delta Pi has over eighty-one active chapters throughout the United States and Canada, and is still building with the infinite caution which has kept it secure for one hundred years. The standards of the sorority and its ritual as used today are very similar to those introduced in 1851. The obligation of membership and the open motto We live for each otherv are virtually unchanged even in wording. A member of National Panhellenic since 1909, Alpha Delta Pi is proud of its affiliation with the twenty national sororities which comprise the national Panhellenic group. Alpha Delta Piis creed stands for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for Whole-hearted cooperation with the collegeis ideals for student life, for the main- tenance of fine social standards, and for the serving, to the best of its ability, the college community. It is the duty of every Alpha Delta Pi to conform to the stand- ards of the sorority and the college. She should also be distinguished by courtesy, consideration for others, and a gracious and helpful attitude to all with Whom they come in contact. Gamma Pi now has twenty-four members and nine pledges who are active as a group in college life and also as individuals in the various phases of the entire school program. This year the sorority has sponsored an open dance, Cinderella's Ball , on October 7, 1950. The sisters have given two bridge parties during the year, the proceeds of one going to the Wagner College Building Fund. Several teas have highlighted the social year of Alpha Delta Pi.
