FDI Tl Ei hteen ears ago Dr. Ralph E. Deal joined the Biology Department of Wagner College, 8 Y thereby beginning a period of rich and full service as an educator and beginning, at the same time, a deep enduring friendship that has grown through the passing years. Friend to all-to t-Dr. Deal has contributed greatly to the the college and to the students of his departmen growth and development of Wagner. To Dr. Deal, in tribute to his long and devoted service, this, the 1951 Kallista is dedicated. Earning his A.B. at Nebraska XVesleyan University, Dr. Deal received his M.A. from the State University of Iowa in 1929, and a year later, at the age of twenty-nine, he received his Y k Ph.D. from the same school. His teaching career began at St. Stephens College, New or , . In 1933 Dr. Deal came to Wagner as Professor of Biology. where he instructed for three years Since that time, Dr. Deal, a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, had become Chairman of the Biology Department. Equipped with a versatile ingenuity, . . . . t Dr. Deal has demonstrated his abilities by constructing many pieces of departmental equipmen himself. He has also directed his talents toward the development of the Aquarium Club, for u a u . n l h F whom as adviser, he built tanks in his own electrical shop in the basement of hxs ome on ac- l R d Oth r Jroducts have emanated from this basement workshop, contributions to the U 03. . C I c c Campus Community Chest Carnival, and this year came wooden devices which helped turn I 1 1 n v I 0 h sin le cots into bunk beds, providing over sixty students with beds in the auditorium when t e S Big Blow made Luther Hall uninhabitable. Dr. Deal's untiring efforts at this time helped im- mensely to ease the emergency the storm had caused, a typical example of his readiness to serve the college. A professor of high standards and a perfectionist, students find working for Dr.. Deal is no easy task. Nevertheless, his genuine interest in his students proves beneficial, no student recommended by Dr. Deal has ever been denied entrance to graduate medical school, a fact which Dr. Deal is more proud of than any of his other achievements. At no time can Dr. Deal be found happier than at the times he can say, Another of our boys made it. ...-gf
