Y. ,M F Rl-EW RD A year at Wagner is a year of memories- mem- ories to be stored away and then someday, in the dim days that make up the future, to be taken out, brushed off, and lived once again. It is a year when life means books and term papers, parties and dates, football games and dances. But memories falter, the images of yester-year waver and fade. In the hope that we may provide a means to clear away the clouds of vagueness that will rise before us in years to come, we present . . . i THE 1951 Knnnnrn, an effort to depict a . . . GI KJ .lf -Med WAG ER . . . expanding to meet the demands ofthe Y C U T H of A M E C A OI' ACL CULT RAL ATHLETI Wa -es. PPCRTU ITIE which they may utilize advantageously in training themselves for a position in the intricate society of today. FDI Tl Ei hteen ears ago Dr. Ralph E. Deal joined the Biology Department of Wagner College, 8 Y thereby beginning a period of rich and full service as an educator and beginning, at the same time, a deep enduring friendship that has grown through the passing years. Friend to all-to t-Dr. Deal has contributed greatly to the the college and to the students of his departmen growth and development of Wagner. To Dr. Deal, in tribute to his long and devoted service, this, the 1951 Kallista is dedicated. Earning his A.B. at Nebraska XVesleyan University, Dr. Deal received his M.A. from the State University of Iowa in 1929, and a year later, at the age of twenty-nine, he received his Y k Ph.D. from the same school. His teaching career began at St. Stephens College, New or , . In 1933 Dr. Deal came to Wagner as Professor of Biology. where he instructed for three years Since that time, Dr. Deal, a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, had become Chairman of the Biology Department. Equipped with a versatile ingenuity, . . . . t Dr. Deal has demonstrated his abilities by constructing many pieces of departmental equipmen himself. He has also directed his talents toward the development of the Aquarium Club, for u a u . n l h F whom as adviser, he built tanks in his own electrical shop in the basement of hxs ome on ac- l R d Oth r Jroducts have emanated from this basement workshop, contributions to the U 03. . C I c c Campus Community Chest Carnival, and this year came wooden devices which helped turn I 1 1 n v I 0 h sin le cots into bunk beds, providing over sixty students with beds in the auditorium when t e S Big Blow made Luther Hall uninhabitable. Dr. Deal's untiring efforts at this time helped im- mensely to ease the emergency the storm had caused, a typical example of his readiness to serve the college. A professor of high standards and a perfectionist, students find working for Dr.. Deal is no easy task. Nevertheless, his genuine interest in his students proves beneficial, no student recommended by Dr. Deal has ever been denied entrance to graduate medical school, a fact which Dr. Deal is more proud of than any of his other achievements. At no time can Dr. Deal be found happier than at the times he can say, Another of our boys made it. ...-gf if 1 wiihriiil Qfnfww A 4 ! , 2? ,. J . L . ': S ', f , . . 5 . . . At VVagner College the collegiate plan for nurs- ing is the pathway by which young women are realizing their ambition. Wagner College School of Nursing held its first classes in September of 1943 under the govern- ment cadet nurse corps. Today the four years of college life at VVagner are planned so that the student nurse is able to participate in college functions and spend two years in hospital field experience. The student nurse receives her training in medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, and operating room technique at Staten Is- land General Hospital. Sea View Hospital, also on the island, is where experience in communicable disease is gained. The third alliliation is the psychiatric period which she spends at Creedmoor State Hospital on Long Island. The green and white uniform designed by the first class in 1943 is worn by the student nurse when she starts her pre-clinical period. Following a probationary period she participates in the impressive Florence Night- ingale capping and candlelighting services held in the college auditorium. At the completion of four years the student is eligible for a B.S. degree and the privilege of being a Registered Nurse. t 70 MM 3 , 'Wfsi ,. Today that small nucleus has grown into one of the largest and most active organizations on the Hill. In attempt- ing to live up to the aim- to further the educational, social and related activities of the Pre-Medical stu- dent --the organization this year has made tours of hospitals and other medical institutions, heard lectures by prominent guest speakers and viewed timely and topical films of interest to society members. The Pre- Meds have also embarked upon the athletic Held and have met with noteworthy success in intramural con- tests, especially in the animal battle with their arch rivals, the Pre-Sems. The achievements of the Wagner College Pre- Medical Society in all fields of endeavor compare favorably to the successes of similar groups with far greater memberships in some of the nationls largest universities. Choir The Wagrier Choir, reorganized in September, 1946, under the direction of Professor John Bainbridge, has since become one of the most cohesive and spirited organizations on the campus. In january 1950, under the direction of Dr. Sigvart Steen, it embarked on an eighteen day, iive state tour which resulted in the moulding of an organization which astounded audiences and critics with its sincerity, intonations and musi- cal ability. Newspaper critics acclaimed the choir as one of the finer singing organizations, comparable to the traditional fine college choirs of the middle-west Reviewers used such phrases as, An amazingly flawless presentation . . . enriching and inspiring experience . . . a perfect ensemble, in describ- ing the concerts sung before capacity houses. As well as meeting in rehearsal live periods a week each of the members is enrolled as a voice student and several of last years' beginners are now performing soloists. During Ian- uary and February 1951, the choir undertook the longest tour in its history, presenting concerts of a-cappella sacred music before capacity audiences in such cities as: Washington, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Reading, and Waterbury and in many other smaller cities. Possessing an amazing espirit de corps and working under the talented direction of its famed director, the Wagner Choir is looking forward to many successful seasons and it is ex- pected that the coming years will see the choir traveling greater distances by popular request. The continual fulfillment of the ideals of leadership, friendship, and loyalty to the Alma Mater has, from the very beginning of its existence, made the VVagner College chapter one ot the strongest and firmest links in the national chain of over seventy chapters at colleges and universities from coast to coast. One of the richest things that Alpha has to offer to its members is the deep bond of brotherhood made possible only by the inspired Working of the individual members as a group for the benefit of all phases of student life at the Alma Mater. Social events of the year included the seventh annual Free Fall Formal, the costume party, and the annual Spring Formal, held this year at the Molly Pitcher Hotel in Red Bank, N. J. , homecommg Hoax. Delta Nu Frater- nity, in its effort to attain excel- lence in all phases of college life while at the same time stressing service to Wagner as one of its highest ideals, is perpetrating forever the memory of Roger Ling. Leaders in all the varied aspects of life on the Hill, academic, athletic, social, and civic, Delta Nu men still find time to activate the motive of Delta Nu for Wagner, emphasizing the ideal of service to the fullest extent for the greatest benefit of Wagner Col- lege. VVhile doing this the men of Delta Nu feel that they are carrying on in their own small way the high ideals for which Roger Ling gave his life- ideals never to be forgotten. The success of the year for Delta Nu was the winning of the first prize for the Homecoming Float Parade. Another important event of a more serious and stirring nature was the presentation of an oil portrait of Roger Ling to the fraternity by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ling. Continuing to grow in tradition, the youngest fraternity on the Hill devised a fraternity seal and motto, and a fraternity song, Not So Many Years Agon, was composed. Adding to the already organized Delta News , a monthly paper, and the year old Alumni Association, Delta Nu is striving to fulfill the epigram, Not the oldest-not the largest-just the bestv. Another development of importance to the fraternity was the affiliation with the Confederation of Local Fraternities of the East. This affiliation with other fraternal groups in colleges of the eastern area gave Delta Nu the opportunity to gain the advantages of a national fraternity while re- maining a distinct, independent organization. iigf 'nr Anofher Noffrhl Sweet Adelinefi 109 Kappa Sigma Alpii Master Frater Chaplain . Rohr Twenty years old, Kappa Sig- ma Alpha Fraternity was organ- ized for the express purpose of promoting the loyalty of its brothers to XVagner College and of effecting a greater realization and attainment of their scholas- tic, cultural, and spiritual ideals. The underlying fraternal feeling is based on the desire to produce a closer relationship and a deeper consideration and understanding among the students at Wagner College. It is the cosmopolitan spirit which per- vades the activities of the fraternity at all times. Demonstrating its extra-curricular as well as scholastic interest, the fra- ternity presents three awards annually: the Kappa Sigma Alpha award in education, the Kappa Sigma Alpha award to the yearls most outstanding player on the VVagner College football team, and the Cordon Lathrop Scholastic Cup. The group annually sponsors a semi-formal dance, a Founder's Day banquet and May Day social. The fraternity dances, which feature con- tinuous music, are well known for their unusual and exotic decorative effect. NVith the reactivation of the Kappa Sigma Alpha Alumni Association and the subsequent coordination of the two groups, Kappa Sigma Alpha can this year look forward to greater and higher standards in achieving its goals. Alfred Krahmer Mr. VVarren F. Robinson Mr. Herbert Sutter Mr. Frederick Willecke The brotherhood of Sigma Delta Phi, the first fraternity at Wagner College, was or- ganized on May 6, 1923, by five men who desired a closer bond of fellowship. The ideals expressed in the original con- stitution, scholastic achieve- ment, effective participation in the extra-curricular activi- ties of the campus, and a f true spirit of fellowship and brotherhood, are still the criteria by which prospective members are adjudged. Sigma believes that all students attend college primarily for an education, and therefore refuses to encourage those who are remiss in this vital aspect. Accordingly, XVagner, as the Alma Mater, is first in the hearts of the brothers. Toward that end, the fraternity has instituted an annual award to the outstand- ing student in the English department, and has reactivated the Herbert Holter Memorial Plaque for excellence in athletics. The recent CHEY drive was gen- erously supported by both the Active and Alumni chapters of the fraternity. An annual dance is sponsored by Sigma for the enjoyment of the entire Stu- dent body, as Well as several rush socials each year. Last years dance at the Boulevard Hotel was a huge success in terms of attendance and enjoyment. The brothers have also taken the initiative in sponsoring a bus to several of the away football games, enabling many to see the games who otherwise could not have attended. Although the 1950 graduation removed twenty-four of the active brothers, the fraternity maintains close ties with its alumni group. By frequent joint meet- ings of the officers of the actives and the alumni, interest is not only stimulated in the welfare of the fraternity, but also in the affairs of XVagner. An annual convention highlights each spring, presenting an opportunity for the actives to meet older brothers, and returning these men to Sigma and to NVagner. Sigma Delta Phi is a democratic brotherhood where individuality and free- dom of expression are of paramount importance. Inner assent has always been substituted for external compulsion and authority. Unquestioning acceptance and respect for the otheris opinions have developed and matured Sigma men to the point where they are effectively prepared for the outside world. Finally, we are confident that all of the brothers have absorbed the true spirit of brother- hood and that those who remain will carry on this fraternial spirit aunblemished after usf, storms- Siif, - as Nil S entr . y U1 fllcj IOIHCQ . 113 Ommg inside Alpha Delta Pi President . . Blanken Dr. Ida G. Everson Mrs. Adolph Stern Gamma Pi, chapter of Alpha Delta Pi, celebrates its first year on the Wagner College campus. This group, first a local sorority, Tau Lambda Chi, affiliated with Alpha Delta Pi in May, 1949, and now enjoys the distinction of being the first national soror- ity on the hill. The sisters of Tau Lambda Chi were inducted into Alpha Delta Pi on May 6, 1950. The induction was followed by a ceremonial dinner at the Richmond County Country Club. While Gamma Pi observes its first year at Wagner, Alpha Delta Pi celebrates its centennial as the oldest sorority in the United States. College education for women was still an innovation when the Adelphian Society was founded on May 15, 1851, by a group of girls at XVesleyan College, Macon, Georgia. It was, however, not until 1904 that Alpha Delta Pi really began expanding on a national scale. Today Alpha Delta Pi has over eighty-one active chapters throughout the United States and Canada, and is still building with the infinite caution which has kept it secure for one hundred years. The standards of the sorority and its ritual as used today are very similar to those introduced in 1851. The obligation of membership and the open motto We live for each otherv are virtually unchanged even in wording. A member of National Panhellenic since 1909, Alpha Delta Pi is proud of its affiliation with the twenty national sororities which comprise the national Panhellenic group. Alpha Delta Piis creed stands for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for Whole-hearted cooperation with the collegeis ideals for student life, for the main- tenance of fine social standards, and for the serving, to the best of its ability, the college community. It is the duty of every Alpha Delta Pi to conform to the stand- ards of the sorority and the college. She should also be distinguished by courtesy, consideration for others, and a gracious and helpful attitude to all with Whom they come in contact. Gamma Pi now has twenty-four members and nine pledges who are active as a group in college life and also as individuals in the various phases of the entire school program. This year the sorority has sponsored an open dance, Cinderella's Ball , on October 7, 1950. The sisters have given two bridge parties during the year, the proceeds of one going to the Wagner College Building Fund. Several teas have highlighted the social year of Alpha Delta Pi. In addition to their other activities, the sorority gave a Christmas party for dependent children in the area. Fxoat . I mec0mmg his HO 2 1 .- BQ j 'Fw W. fl . A . if. Theta is proud of the leadership and active interest of her members in activities outside the school as well as within. The sisters are leaders in such clubs and organizations as Varsity Players, Dormitory Council, Stu- dent Christian Association, Campus Community Chest, Student Council, and the Kallista, and several of the seniors were honored by being placed on the list of Who's Who in American Colleges. The highlight of the year was the highly successful annual dance. It was the first Wagner dance to be held at the Richmond County Country Club. Theta was proud, too, to receive second prize in the Homecoming Day float parade competition. Another annual undertaking was the collec- tion and distribution of Christmas gifts for children at Seaview Hospital, and Theta's annual Business Administration Award was presented to the most deserving senior at the Student Body Banquet. Besides various successful rush socials and other parties held by the sorority, the pledges gave a Sock Hop in honor of the sisters and their dates -another success. The highlight of the season was the winning of the Greater New York Conference Championship for the second consecutive season. Coach Herb Sutter was not optimistic about his club,s chances before the season's start. He had but three men with varsity experience returning for the ,50 season. Some- one had to replace Iim Gilmartin and lay Quintana, former Wagner stars. For the pivot position Sutter looked towards Don Gromisch, a junior who had spent two years performing with the jay Vees. To say that Gromisch filled in adequately would be an understatement. His main forte was an amazingly accurate left-handed hook shot. By the end of the year Don had compiled 403 points, an all time Wagner record. His field goal percentage was 51.8, one of the best percentages in the nation. The three veterans on the club were Ray Doody, who served as Captain, Larry Sweeney, and Bob Bosley. Doody played his fourth year of varsity basketball and played it well. His ball handling and defensive play were outstanding, while offensively he scored 276 points this season. Playing in more winning basketball games than any other basketball player since Wagner began the court game, his four year total of 921 points is an all time Wagner high. Bosley, the team,s second high scorer, netted 324 points. On offense he stayed outside with Doody most of the time. A colorful performer throughout the season, Sonnyv possessed a variety of shots which made him difficult to guard. Sweeney, playing his third year with the Seahawks, turned in the best perform- ance of his career this season. Third in team scoring with 297 points, his scoring ability plus his hustle under the boards and his ability to be in the right place at the right time were deciding factors in many Wagner victories. The fifth position on the team was divided between two very promising freshmen, Bob Mahala and George Blomquist. Mahala, 6'3,', and Blomquist, 6'5 , provided valuable rebounding strength for the Seahawks all season long. The other members of the squad, Burgis Coates, Al F rolander, Chubby,' Hanni- gan, and Don Finley, gave Coach Sutter valuable reserve strength. Coates and Hanni- gan are seniors while F rolander and Finley still have additional seasons in which to play. Coates, a good ball-handler, played occasionally in the pivot. Frolander, the fastest man on the squad, did very well on the fast breaking type of offense. Hanni- gan, primarily a set-shooter, was an asset against tough zone defenses while Finley showed promise of better things to come with some fine driving shots. All seven of the Seahawk losses came on away games. The Seahawks have lost only one contest in a two year period at the Curtis High School Gymnasium which served as a home court. Although Curtis filled the need for a court very adequately, everyone connected with the team will be glad to see the new gymnasium in operation at the start of next season. . The team was composed of seven veterans and six new players. Forwards Pat Town- send, jane Stowell, and Ellen Kalinowski and guard Chris Thing played their last season for Wagner. Guards Norma Zawadski and Captain Fran Cutekunst, along with Barbara Horvath, a forward, rounded out the veteran nucleus. Newcomers on the squad were forwards june Heard, Barbara Helmke, and Mickey Schmidt and guards Lucille Brown, Bunny Clausen, and Barbara Kayser. The team played twelve of their sixteen games away so that next year the girls might fully utilize the facilities of the new gym. 127 BA EBALL The 1950 Wagner baseball team came up with a good year, winning twelve and losing five. The team, coached by Herb Sutter, combined steady pitching with a group of .300 hitters and a good defensive infield. Captaining the ,50 squad was Bill Thompson, a catcher whose steadying infiuence on the pitching staff was of definite importance to the teamis success. Bert Helgesen took over the first base position and showed a lot of promise as a long ball hitter. Ted Hall played at second base for his fourth year at Wagner and turned in an outstanding job. His defensive play was tops, while he batted a sharp .329. Al Frolander filled both the short- stop position and the leadoff slot in the batting order. He was second in runs batted in and rapped out two home runs during the season. Don Silva, the rangy New Dorp boy, was at the hot corner, third base. All he did was bat 366, leading the club in runs batted in with nineteen and producing the most hits with thirty. The outfield consisted of Emil Cenci, Bob Pierano, and either Phil Qualben or Ziggy Wachs- muth. The popular Cenci hit .302 and was second in hits and stolen bases. Pierano turned in a creditable job in right field while slugging at a .323 clip. Wachsmuth and Qualben were front line pitchers besides performing in the outHeld. Qual- ben, the fastest man on the team, stole fifteen bases and batted .333. Wachsmuth was the only undefeated starting pitcher as he won three games. He defeated Drew, Upsala, and Stevens. Perhaps his best job was in a contest he did not win. At Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Wagner played in the Middle Atlantic States Athletic Conference tournament and lost to Bucknell, 5-3, in the opening round. Ziggy pitched in relief that day and was superb. Southpaw Qualben won three and lost two. He, too, did not get credit for his best perform- ance. It was a 1-1 tie with Moravian in which he allowed but two hits over an eight inning span. Surprisingly enough the ace pitcher for Coach Sutter was a freshman from St. Peter,s High School, Don Finley. The red-headed neophyte led the team with five wins. In innings pitched and strikeouts he was top man, and his earned run average was the lowest of the pitching squad. Finley came into prominence against C. C. N. Y. early in the year. He held the Beavers hitless in relief until the tenth inning when his own error set up the winning run. From then on he was a regular and followed with wins over St. Francis, Susquehanna, Drew, R. P. I., and St. Peter,s. The St. Francis win was a beautiful two hit shutout i11 which he struck out eleven and walked but one. 128 Wagner NVagner XVugner XVagncr XVugncr ,,..,,,.,,,, 1-3 Wagner ,77777.,,,A. TRAC Handicapped by the lack of a track, the Wagner Col- lege Track Team used the West Campus practice field as a training track. All the meets were scheduled away and a busy season was in order under the tutelage of Coach Bunny,' Barbes. Led by the star and captain, Bob VVinckler, the team entered nine meets: Brooklyn Poly, Montclair State, Trenton State, St. Peter's, Kings Point, City College-St. johnis, Adelphi, Hofstra, and F airleigh- Dickinson. With the team losing eight, the lone win and first in two years was over Fairleigh-Dickinson. A mile relay team composed of Ed Weinberg, Chuck Rocke- feller, George Scheitlin, and Palmer Thompson was sent to the Seton Hall Relays at Newark School Stadium, New jersey. In the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Track and Field Association at Delaware, Wagner sent a con- tingent comprised of Palmer Thompson, Ed Weinberg, Ted Lovington, Bob Winckler, and jay Quintana. Listed among the lettermen were: Captain Bob VVinck- ler, 100, 220, and broad jump, Ed Weinberg, 220, 440, and high jump, Bud Kenyon, 100 and 220, Bill Thomp- son, one mile, Ted Lovington, two mile and high jump, Palmer Thompson, high hurdles, 440, and high jump, john Paven, high and low hurdles and broad jump, George Scheitlin, 440, 'Sweden Kolmodin, low hurdles, Bill Proehrich, pole vault and discus, Dick Wasmund, javelin and discus, Don Graves, shotput, Don juliano, javelin and discus, Charlie Keller, half mile, jim Keller, manager. Other members of the team were: Ernest Dow, Chic Schneider, Leon Mangin, Harold Kjellen, Bill Bodamer, Vin Leo, and Marvin Lepaw. Enthusiasm in track and field is growing and the members are looking forward to a very successful season in the near future. ,if ,mme Wi' TENN The Wagner College Tennis Team enjoyed a successful season as they powered their way to eight wins while losing but two matches. Among the stronger clubs they defeated was St. Iohn's which was taken by a close 5-4 score. Mr. Ciesemann coached the eight man squad that played its home games at Clifton Tennis Club, Fort XVadsworth, Staten Island. Ralph Powelson led the YVagner attack at first singles, Pete Landis ranked at second singles, Ray NVhelan held third spot, Captain Milt Grosz held fourth position, Don Drown played fifth singles, and Ray Adams placed sixth in the team rankings. Powelson and Landis combined in first doubles, Crosz and VVhelan played second doubles, and Hank Clifford and Adams played third doubles. Nat Welyster was alternate and Bob Snede- ker filled the post of manager. All but three of the squad played their last match for the Green and VVhite, with only Powelson, Landis, and WVebster back for next yearis campaign. However, the return of the two leading players will form a sound nucleus for next yearis squad and prospects are not altogether dim. 'N-uw MILTON CROSZ Captain HEERLEADER Come on Creen, Come on White . . This lusty cry is familiar to all Seahawk fans. lt is initiated by ten girls in green, the cheerleaders. After losing a large majority of the squad at graduation, they started in Sep- tember with seven new girls. Despite this handicap they have surpassed previous seasons in the formation of new cheers, spirit, and vitality. Their performance between halves on Homecoming Day has become a greatly anticipated event. On Held and court, their appearance has become a vital part of the color and tradition of Wagner.
