Na Three years of combined effort on the part of a number of members if the girls' basketball team brought a certain amount of perfection to its play. Pat Townsend and Janie Stowell, high scorers from last year's squad, and the guard combo of Ave Futchs, Jane Marsden, Christine Thing, Fran Gutekunst and Mim Barden helped make a veteran squad effective. All the weak spots were cemented by such new additions as Ellen Kalin- owsky, transferee from N. Y. U., Norma Zawadski, and Betty Huf. The female Green Wave started off strong by defeating three of their first four opponents. The Hawkettes were led by slim Pat Townsend, and di- munitive Janie Stowell, co-captains of the team. Both girls were fairly con- sistent in hitting the double column. Miss Helen Toebke, the coach, had her defense employ a modified zone defense, which added immeasurably in the Hawkette victories. The majority of the grandstand was usually composed of men, who seemed to admire the color which the white-clad Wagner girls displayed. l37

The track and cross country representatives of Wagner Col- lege suffered an unfortunate season in l949, winning but one victory in twelve meets, even though some individuals turned in outstanding performances upon occasion. The cross country team after being defeated by the harriers of Adelphi, Montclair, and Hofstra, competed unsuccessfully in the Middle Atlantic lnter-Collegiate Track and Field Association Cham- pionship meet. lts lone victory was scored against Brooklyn Poly. The captain and star of the team was Ted Lovington, William Thompson, a freshman, showed much promise too. Other members of the squad were: Vin Leo, Leon Mangin, Willie Bodamer, John Cotter, Art VanEtten, Don Parnell and Bill Harden. John Fehringer managed the team. The track team met defeat in six meets, Seton Hall Relays, Trenton Teachers, Montclair, Brooklyn Poly, St. Peters and C. C. N. Y.-St. John's meet . Bill Kelly was the captain of the squad, whose star performer was Bob Winkler. The rest of the squad was comprised of Bob Corring, Herb Schulman, Ted Lovington, Ray Whalen, Ed Weinberg, Neil Maclntyre, Bill Roehrich, Jim Rahman, Vin Leo, Joe Lauro, Harold Kjellen, Charlie Keller, Leon Mangin, Jack Dicker, Dick Washmund, Phil Schick, and Dick Regan. 136

On the ball field and in the gymnasium there are ten people clad in the green of Wag- ner that are not players but are as valuable to the cohesive spirit of Seahawk rooters as any All-American performer might be-they are the cheerleaders. The girls have developed a number of rous- ing, clever cheers, which even at bad moments for our football and basketball teams, provoke laughter and an undefined brightness among fans and performers alike. The girls are led by Miss Toebke, and co- captains Grace Behling and Janie Stowell.
