Penn. Military College 87-6l, and finally St. Peter's, lJ. C.l 88-65. ln their final game against the Mariners from Kings Point the Seahawks in scoring 84 points hit on 40 shots from the floor, which is a record which should stand for a long time. Thus in one season Wagner hit the cords for 80 points in four games. To round out their season the Varsity played a post-season game against a girls team comprised of Cheerleaders and the Girls Basketball Squad. The highlights of this game, played as a benefit for the Gym Fund, were the facts that the men wore boxing gloves, could only shoot left-handed, could not jump, were required to walk and had to play only girl's rules. Needless to say, the girls were victorious 33-3l. Jim Gilmartin, was high-scorer for the season amassing 3l l points on l i3 field goals and 85 foul shots. The seasons high-scorer for a single game was Larry Sweeney with 26 points against St. Peters. Outstanding under the boards all season were Jim Gilmartin, Dick Doremus, Jay Quintana, with Ray Doody and Bob Blomquist rounding out the starting five. Stellar substitutes were to be found in Chet Sellitto, Bob Bosley, and Larry Sweeney, these boys, though they didn't start, were on a par with the varsity. Other members of the Varsity who showed to advantage were Don Gomisch, Al Frolander, Phil Qualben, and Burgis Coates. Next season prospects are bright even though the starting five, with the exception of Doody, will have graduated. Sellitto also will be missed, but with such stellar stars as Bosley and Sweeney moving up to the start- ing five, Wagner again will have a good team. The J. V. compiled a mediocre record of 7-l l against some rugged opposition supplied by such J. V.'s as Seton Hall, L. l. U., St. John's, Manhattan, and the like. Don Gromish, who saw limited service on the Varsity scored 300 points in Junior Varsity competition. lt is expected that Coach Gearhart's charges will supply material for next years varsity. Entering inter-collegiate competition for the first time since pre-war days, Wagner tennis team enjoyed a great season. The Seahawk racquetmen, al- though participating on an informal basis, posted a record which showed seven victories and only one setback in eight matches against strong metropolitan and Eastern teams. The team ran roughshod over six straight opponents before bowing finally to a strong City College squad. Bouncing back from that defeat, the Hawks scored their most impressive and thrilling victory of the year, a hard- fought 5-4 win over the Redmen of St. John's. This match was decided in the early twilight, as the doubles team of Pete Landis and Hank Clifford downed their St. John's adversaries in two spirited sets. Included among the earlier victims of the Green and White were Upsala, Pratt, Brooklyn Poly, Brooklyn College, Pace, and Susquehanna. The last mentioned was met and defeated, 7-2, at Selinsgrove, Pa., on the team's only long trip of the year. Highlighting the season were the fine play of number one man, Ralph Powelson, who met some of the best players in the East, the top-notch doubles team of Powelson and Pete Landis, the steady, dependable performances of Milt Grosz and Barney Jensen, the former seven times single winner, the latter unbeaten in eight singles matches, and the colorful if unorthodox style of Ray Whalen, whose antics on the court more than once upset his opponents. Rounding out the team were Ray Adams, Don Drown, Stan Terkelsen, Tom Lennox, and Hank Clifford. Paul Guertler was team manager. Tennis Team Record Wagner... .. . .v,.. 5 Upsala .... .
