K .fi is ..s.,, ' W . Sbfpg -Lfxiz CAPTAIN JIM GILMARTIN. Sparked by Captain Jim Gilmartin, the I949-50 team achieved the best record in recent Seahawk history. The hoopsters compiled an excellent record of I9 victories against 5 defeats. The l949-5O season saw the inception of the Greater New York Conference, with Wagner, Brooklyn Poly, Pratt, Adelphi, Hofstra, Queens, Kings Point, and Cooper Union as members. Wagner easily won the Conference championship by winning all seven G. N. Y. C. games. The highlight of the Conference season was the spine-tingling 62-52 overtime victory over the Adelphi Panthers. With 50 seconds remaining in the game, and Wagner 5 points behind, the seahawks rallied to send the game into an extra period. Cap- tain Jim Gilmartin and Jay Quintana were selected for the first all-star team in the Conference, while Bob Blomquist was chosen for the second team. The Championship Seahawks were honored at a dinner held at Pratt Institute. The highlight of the season was achieved on the evening of February 6th, when a red-hot Wagner squad turned back the Fordham Rams 57-53 on Fordhams home court. Sparked by the brilliant playing of the kids , Spanky Sweeney, and Sonny Bosley, Wagner gained the lead at the seven minute marker and thereafter held a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game. Bosley tallied I7 points, mostly on spectacular one-handed shots. This was perhaps the greatest basketball victory ever achieved by the Seahawks . Two of the defeats suffered by the Seahawks , were at the hands of two teams destined to go later inthe season to major tournaments, Brooklyn, IN. A. l. B.l and St. John's lNational Invitation Tournamentl. Other highlights of the season were the breaking, three times during the season, of the Wagner College high- scoring mark for a game. They were against Baltimore University 83-60, ISO

Penn. Military College 87-6l, and finally St. Peter's, lJ. C.l 88-65. ln their final game against the Mariners from Kings Point the Seahawks in scoring 84 points hit on 40 shots from the floor, which is a record which should stand for a long time. Thus in one season Wagner hit the cords for 80 points in four games. To round out their season the Varsity played a post-season game against a girls team comprised of Cheerleaders and the Girls Basketball Squad. The highlights of this game, played as a benefit for the Gym Fund, were the facts that the men wore boxing gloves, could only shoot left-handed, could not jump, were required to walk and had to play only girl's rules. Needless to say, the girls were victorious 33-3l. Jim Gilmartin, was high-scorer for the season amassing 3l l points on l i3 field goals and 85 foul shots. The seasons high-scorer for a single game was Larry Sweeney with 26 points against St. Peters. Outstanding under the boards all season were Jim Gilmartin, Dick Doremus, Jay Quintana, with Ray Doody and Bob Blomquist rounding out the starting five. Stellar substitutes were to be found in Chet Sellitto, Bob Bosley, and Larry Sweeney, these boys, though they didn't start, were on a par with the varsity. Other members of the Varsity who showed to advantage were Don Gomisch, Al Frolander, Phil Qualben, and Burgis Coates. Next season prospects are bright even though the starting five, with the exception of Doody, will have graduated. Sellitto also will be missed, but with such stellar stars as Bosley and Sweeney moving up to the start- ing five, Wagner again will have a good team. The J. V. compiled a mediocre record of 7-l l against some rugged opposition supplied by such J. V.'s as Seton Hall, L. l. U., St. John's, Manhattan, and the like. Don Gromish, who saw limited service on the Varsity scored 300 points in Junior Varsity competition. lt is expected that Coach Gearhart's charges will supply material for next years varsity.
