Simultaneously, the grid squad also amassed staggering statistics during the l949 season. The team ran roughshod over all opposi- tion, piling up a total of more than 3500 yards from passing and rushing, while yielding only l8OO yards. ln addition, the Seahawks set a new scoring mark with 252 points to place them near the top among the small colleges. Despite the fine season last year, the loss of l9 members of the squad due to graduation, will seriously hurt next faIl's team. Coach Jim Lee Howell had the misfortune to build up a winning team most of whose players finished their college careers at the same time. Offensively the Seahawks were led by Chet Sellitto and Joy Quintana of the ground and by co-captain and quarterback Matt Scaffa in the air. Dan Hanssen, the other co-captain, and Ken Oetjen were the standout stars on de- fense for Wagner. Don Drown, left end, was the recipient of the Kappa Sigma Alpha award as the Most Valuable Player of the l949 season. The All- Armenian American Intercollegiate Football Team left end was Chuck Babikian, freshman defensive wingman. The James Robb Trophy, awarded to the outstanding player in the Home- coming Day game, went to halfback Chester Sellitto. The only Wagner loss of the year came at the hands of Moravian in the opening game of l26 a SCU 5 t s f 1 .. 1 , , ,L F 3 A its K, 0 Q 07

the season. The under dog Seahawks folded in the second half to lose 26-l 8 after holding an ll point lead at halftime. Wagner overpowered Susquehanna and Hofstra in the next two games 41-27 and I9- 6. Bob Winckler, Jack Dicker, Drown, Sellitto and Quintana all scored against the Crusaders, Winckler making two touchdowns. Quintana intercepted two passes to set up touchdowns by Drown and Milt Grosz in the Hofstra game, while the third came on a 20 yard pass from Chris Kartalis to Winckler, The Seahawks outgained and outfought their next opponent, Arnold College but failed to outscore the New England squad, and were forced to settle for a disappointing l4-l4 tie. Quintana sparked Wagner with two touch- downs and Bill Thompson helped earn the tie as he continued to convert consistently on the points after touchdown. A hepped up Wagner squad reaped revenge at the expense of the traditional rivals from C. C. N. Y. the following Saturday. The de- termined Hawks overwhelmed the Beavers and romped to a 28-6 victory. From the starting team down to the substitutes used in the late stages, the Wagner gridsters ripped through the City line and stopped the C. C. N. Y. at- tack cold. Wagner continued on the victory path with an easy 34-6 triumph over a weak Ursinus eleven at Collegeville, Pennsylvania and eked out a l2-6 win over a stubborn Upsala team in a rough game. 654!!
