HELEN TOEBKE Coach JANE STOWELL Captain hal ,, L. THE past season, the fourth year under the capable coaching of Miss Helen Toebke, the Wagner Seahawkettes put up an increasingly well-integrated opposition to oncomers, Each year for the past four, the team has done better and is on its way to becom- ing a formidable opponent to the other schools of the Metropolitan area. Comparative scores show that other teams are losing their hold on the posi- tive ends of the scores, Scores Wagner ,,,,,,,,,,,, 47 Long Island University, ,,,,,,,, 42 Wagner ..,..,,... .26 St. Joseph ,,,,,,,.,.....,,,.,,,, ,,,.,,,, 4 3 Wagner .,,,,,,,,,,, Zl Panzer ,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,, 3 8 Wagner ,,,A,,,,., ,36 Adelphi , ,,,,, W35 Wagner ...., .,,, 3 4 Hofstra .,,,,, ,,,.,,.,,,,, ,,,,,,.. 3 5 Wagner ,.,,,aa,,,,, 36 Queens , ,,.,.,,.,..,,...,,,,o, ,, 3,347 Wagner ,,,,.,,,,... 33 New York University ,,,,.,,,,,,,,s,, 48 Wagner .,,,,.,..... l6 Adelphi ,,,,,, ,.,,,,,,,,,,,, ,a,,,... 3 2 Wagner ..,..,,.,,,, 23 Brooklyn ,... ,..,, ,,o.,, , 3 2 Wagner .a...,,,,,,a S7 Moravian ,,,, ,,.,,,,, 5 6 Wagner ......,.,,,, 28 Albright s.,, ,,,,,,,, 3 4

E ,Q Jf tfggs I .,, - 1 457 sew The veterans of last year were the backbone of this year's team, but the new members added an active spirit and fight which spurred the team on. Janie Stowell and Pat Townsend were the high- scorer for the season, and made a well-practiced twosome, which was supplemented and speeded up by Julie Kneeshaw, Joan O'Reagan, and Phyllis Mac- Donald. Margaret Christie, veteran guard, became equally valuable this year as a forward, and played both positions during the season: Jane Marsden, a new addition to the team, was also a valuable asset in this way, by playing both forward and guard. A zone defense system was utilized this year with marked success in the ability to block the opposi- tion's easy access to the basket, At the start of the season, the Hawkettes had three seasoned veterans, Elsie Schatz, Gloria Herrada, and Ave Futchs. The loss of Elsie Schatz and Gloria Herrada midway in the season seriously hampered the team for a time, but the three new members, Pat Krumpe, Christine Thing, and Mimi Barden soon consolidated the de- fense again, especially since Pat Krumpe had played on the team two seasons before. The guards showed a quick response and good teamwork in recovering the ball from the backboard and working it up to the forwards. A revision in the rules for girls' basketball has considerably changed the game. A limited dribble, or two bounces, instead of the former rule allowing only one bounce, has made the guards speed up their game to keep up with opposing forwards, and has enabled the forwards to make a more interesting and faster offense. Because of this speeding up, more interest has been added to the slower girls' games from the spectator's point of view. This change has been evident from the larger audiences which attended this year's home games, and from the generally higher scores racked up. For instance, when the 47-42 victory over Long Island University was phoned in to The Times, the paper doubted the validity of such a high score for a girls' game. The team has had a majority of its games away this year, and has traveled a great deal in cars driven by students who volunteered the use of their cars. The last two games of the season were in Pennsylvania, The trip and an overnight stay in Bethlehem ended the season with a bang. lf next year's team keeps up the improvement in standards shown by this year's team, Wagner will have a team to be proud of.
