C B THE WAGNER diamond men proved to be a high-flying group of Sea Hawks as they winged through a 22 game schedule, soaring to l7 victories as against 5 losses. This record compiled against out- standing Eastern, collegiate nines is the best ever chalked up by a Wagner team. After dropping a three hit heartbreaker to Army by a 4-3 count the Suttermen traveled to the Bronx to meet the Violets of New York University. Through outhitting their opponents for the second straight time, the Seahawks' shoddy fielding and pitching wildness offset their lumber ability and sent them down to their second loss of the young season. With these two losses out of their system, the Seahawks embarked on a six game winning skein, numbering among their victims: Stevens Institute, Kings Point, Upsala, St. John's, Montclair State Teachers College, and the Susquehanna Crusaders. This early win streak was brought to a rude close by St. Peter's College of Jersey City, as the Peacocks made their five hits count toward a close victory. Following this loss, the Sea Hawks once again started on a victory string which was to last for seven games. They defeated in turn, St. Francis, Upsala, Drew, St. Peter's, Pratt, Kings Point and St. John's. A hot and cold Brooklyn College team put an end to Wagner's longest win streak, with the aid of six timely hits, and three costly errors on the part of the Green and White infield. After getting back to winning ways against Rut- ger's of Newark in a nip and tuck affair, Wagner went down to an overwhelming defeat at the hands of a Drew University nine which made the most of l5 free passes to walk off with the win. Undaunted by their one-sided defeat in Madison, New Jersey, home of the Drew University team, the Seahawks bounced back to ride the crest of a three game winning effort and close out the season on a highly-successful note, This final streak saw Wag- ner fatten up its record at the expense of the City College Beavers, Montclair State Teachers, and Al- bright of Reading, Pennsylvania. Highlights of the season were varied and numer- ous. Taking first place by far, was the superbly pitched game of Ed Mensing's. ln the second St. Peter's contest, Ed pitched a full ten innings without being reached for a hit or run. His mastery over St. Peter's was dispelled in the top of the eleventh in- ning when they reached him for two hits. However, he still had enough left to set them down scoreless. Then, in the last of the eleventh, Ed gained his well deserved victory when a single, sacrifice bunt that went as a hit. and a scoring fly produced the winning run. Other bright spots in a brilliant season were the fine fielding of Buck Hall, John Garrettson, Tony Crecca, Gwynn Reese and Emil Cenci, the consis- tently good stickwork of Mike Petosa, John Thom- son, and Phil Laub, and the splendid pitching of Bill Willetts, whose record of lO wins and one loss was one of the finest on the eastern coast. The I948 Seahawk nine is to be congratulated for its fine cooperation and team play which along with the guidance of Coach Herbert Sutter, was instru- mental in setting a lofty mark, worthy of emulation by future Wagner Teams.

ALTHOUGH the lack of a track caused all their meets to be away from home, the Seahawk track team had a fairly busy season taking part in six dual meets and two relay meets. Their record was 3 and 3 on the dual meets while finishing fourth in the Pennsylvania and Seton Hall mile relays. The fresh- man relay squad took fifth place in the Seton Hall meet. ln the opening meet of the season the City Col- lege Evening sessions played host to the Seahawks at McCombs Park. Wagner came home victorious by the score of 68V2-53V2. Earl Arnold, Bob Winckler and Joe Roggenburg led the point scorers and Larry Fauber romped home easily in the two mile run. Arnold won the 880 and 440 runs and tied for first with Bill Kelly in the pole vault. Winckler won the lOO yard dash and the broad jump and came in second in the l2O yard low hurdles. Roggenburg won the 22O yard run and finished second behind Winckler in the lOO yard dash. Representing Wagner in the Seton Hall relays were Earl Arnold, Joe Roggenburg, Sam Gibson and Frank Larsen on the varsity while Herb Schumann, Jack Schnoor, Bob Winckler and Larry Fauber com- prised the freshman team. ln a final meet against Upsala it was a case of not enough seconds as the Wagner squad took eight out of l4 first places yet lost 68-63 in a bit- terly contested contest. Larry Fauber, Earl Arnold and Joe Roggenburg were high scorers for the Wag- ner cindermen. Larry took the 2 mile run and tied 7aada cmcfeaou for first with Herb Schumann in the mile. Roggen- burg took the 220 and Arnold the half mile. The three then teamed up with Frank Larson to win the mile relay. Other winners for the Hawks were Neil Macintyre low hurdles, Jim Rahman javeline and Nick Baldassano shotput. The Wagner squad bounced back to trounce Brooklyn Poly by a 58-37 count. Winckler, Arnold, Fauber, and Roggenburg continued to be the top point getters as they accounted for six first and two seconds among them. Other firsts were scored by Phil Schick in the shotput and Ted Lovington and George Drews who tied for first in the high jumps. The Seahawk cindermen continued their winning ways, beating St. Peters of Jersey City 7l V2-59V2. George Drews with firsts and Joe Roggenburg and Bob Winckler with two wins each led the Wagner victory. Other Wagner men to place first were Milt Grosz, Jack Schnoor, Larry Fauber, Herb Schumann, Bill Kelly and Phil Schick. In the last meet of the season the Seahawks took a severe trouncing from Montclair State Teachers College losing by an 88-43 score, Larry Fauber took two firsts as did Bob Winckler. Earl Arnold and Milt Grosz each took one first and Wagner took the mile relay, This was the last meet for Bob Sabesen, Captain Earl Arnold and Joe Roggenburg. The leading scorer on the squad during the sea- son was Bob Winckler followed closely by Earl Arnold, Larry Fauber and Joe Roggenburg. Fauber, a long distance runner, was undefeated throughout the year.
