C B THE WAGNER diamond men proved to be a high-flying group of Sea Hawks as they winged through a 22 game schedule, soaring to l7 victories as against 5 losses. This record compiled against out- standing Eastern, collegiate nines is the best ever chalked up by a Wagner team. After dropping a three hit heartbreaker to Army by a 4-3 count the Suttermen traveled to the Bronx to meet the Violets of New York University. Through outhitting their opponents for the second straight time, the Seahawks' shoddy fielding and pitching wildness offset their lumber ability and sent them down to their second loss of the young season. With these two losses out of their system, the Seahawks embarked on a six game winning skein, numbering among their victims: Stevens Institute, Kings Point, Upsala, St. John's, Montclair State Teachers College, and the Susquehanna Crusaders. This early win streak was brought to a rude close by St. Peter's College of Jersey City, as the Peacocks made their five hits count toward a close victory. Following this loss, the Sea Hawks once again started on a victory string which was to last for seven games. They defeated in turn, St. Francis, Upsala, Drew, St. Peter's, Pratt, Kings Point and St. John's. A hot and cold Brooklyn College team put an end to Wagner's longest win streak, with the aid of six timely hits, and three costly errors on the part of the Green and White infield. After getting back to winning ways against Rut- ger's of Newark in a nip and tuck affair, Wagner went down to an overwhelming defeat at the hands of a Drew University nine which made the most of l5 free passes to walk off with the win. Undaunted by their one-sided defeat in Madison, New Jersey, home of the Drew University team, the Seahawks bounced back to ride the crest of a three game winning effort and close out the season on a highly-successful note, This final streak saw Wag- ner fatten up its record at the expense of the City College Beavers, Montclair State Teachers, and Al- bright of Reading, Pennsylvania. Highlights of the season were varied and numer- ous. Taking first place by far, was the superbly pitched game of Ed Mensing's. ln the second St. Peter's contest, Ed pitched a full ten innings without being reached for a hit or run. His mastery over St. Peter's was dispelled in the top of the eleventh in- ning when they reached him for two hits. However, he still had enough left to set them down scoreless. Then, in the last of the eleventh, Ed gained his well deserved victory when a single, sacrifice bunt that went as a hit. and a scoring fly produced the winning run. Other bright spots in a brilliant season were the fine fielding of Buck Hall, John Garrettson, Tony Crecca, Gwynn Reese and Emil Cenci, the consis- tently good stickwork of Mike Petosa, John Thom- son, and Phil Laub, and the splendid pitching of Bill Willetts, whose record of lO wins and one loss was one of the finest on the eastern coast. The I948 Seahawk nine is to be congratulated for its fine cooperation and team play which along with the guidance of Coach Herbert Sutter, was instru- mental in setting a lofty mark, worthy of emulation by future Wagner Teams.
