The Hawks opened their season at home with a close, but gratifying win over Panzer College to the tune of l4-l2. A brilliant fourth quarter rally sparked by the passing of little Chris Kartalis pro- vided the Seahawks with the margin of victory. Wagner was also at home for the second week of the season, playing host to the heavily favored Flying Dutchmen of Hofstra. Having won 34-O in '47, the visitors were highly favored this season, but a brilliant forty-four yard run by Jay Quintana, and some rugged Wagner line play drew a tie for the home team. The Seahawks then traveled to East Orange, New Jersey where Upsala tripped them up lZ-7. Nobody knows just exactly what went wrong but from the Wagner point of view it was a very dismal showing. The only bright spot in the day for the Seahawks was a hundred and one yard run by the ever-dependable Quintana. The Hawks returned home to face the yellow- clad gridmen of Brooklyn College in what was the fourth game of the season for both teams. Out- played and outgunned, Wagner put up a spirited, but futile fight before going down to defeat. Brook- lyn scored in the first, third and fourth periods, while holding the Seahawks scoreless, to win ZO-O. The fifth game of the season saw Wagner pitted against the Allegarooa from City College in an arc-light affair at Lewisohn Stadium. Chester Sel- litto, the Bronzed Battler , led the Wagner attack. Chester scored all the Hawk touchdowns as they battled City to a l9-l9 tie. There were two interesting sidelights flickering on this game: Sellitto is a transfer student from City, and all of Wagner's three tallies came during the latter half of play. lt seems that the Seahawk squad was habitually overcoming a first half splurge by the opposition in order to tie or win their games. Of course it's more interesting this way, but much more wearing on the hearts of VVagner rooters- there were many new gray hairs seen in the halls of Wagner after every such game. Knowing that the fans were howling for some more sensational play on their parts, and feeling re- vitalized from their tie against the City, the Hawks took the field against Ursinus Bears and sent the latter team to the shower 28-6. The following Saturday afternoon was Homecom- ing Day at Wagner College, and the Hawk players, always eager to please, sent the Alumni home happy with a win against the favored charges of Coach Alonzo Stagg. The Wagner backfield, in its en- tirety, had a field day. The Seahawks donned their traveling togs for a trip to Oneonta, New York, to meet the Hartwick College Indians for the final game of the season. The Wagner defense cracked with only sixty seconds to go in the first half, and the Indians passed for a touchdown. Though the Seahawks over- came the deficit in the third quarter and took the lead on touchdowns by Quintana and Grosz, they were unable to stop a renewed Hartwick attack, and the lads in green came home at the short end of a 25- l 2 score. Though a three, three and two record might, at best, be termed fair the Wagner College football fans, and Wagner College Coaching staff, and the team itself came out of the season feeling refreshed by the excitement of the game, and by the sub- stantial relationships set up by means of the sport itsel .
