Wwzfdall THE fortunes of the i948 edition of the Wagner College football team, though not outstanding, were none the less impressive. After a rather un- successful season in '47, the Seahawks managed to break even during last year's play with three wins, three losses and two ties. Big Jim Lee Howell, the Arkansas Traveler, re- turned to the Hill to guide the destiny of the Sea- hawk footballers for the second straight year. He brought with him two former All-Americans: Frank Reagan of the University of Pennsylvania and Jim White of Notre Dame. ln addition to providing good coaching, the Col- lege saw to it that the athletic field was newly sodded for the season. They afforded the necessary kick for the home team rooters, as did the cheerleaders, and through- out the season were a constant pleasure to watch and hear. On the field of play itself there were crowd pleasers too, especially in the persons of such back- field stars as speedy Jay Quintana, hard-driving Chet Sellitto, diminutive Matty Scaffa, Milt Grosz, Bobby Loggia, and Chris Kartalis. The rest of the team provided its share of good football too: there were men like George Shaffer, Gene Husted, and Big Jim Gilmartin who flanked the line, others like the Kummer twins, Don Hanssen, Walt Stiering, George Henkel, and innumerable others. Last but not least, there were two outstanding performers: Wagner's captain Whitey Drown, and the man elected for the Most Valuable Player Award , stocky Bill Roehrich.
