WITH a deep sense of pride and satisfaction this, the l949 Kallista is respectfully dedicated to Mr. Virgil Markham, Chairman of the English Department of Wagner College, author of note, and one of those distinguished men honored by inclusion in Who's Who in America . Professor Markham received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University and his Master of Arts from the University of California. After teaching at the University of California and other schools, in his free moments writing books, nine of which have already been published, Professor Markham joined the Wagner Family in l9-42. Friend, teacher, and author, he has been first a friend to all who have been privileged to know him, and second, a teacher, conscientious in his efforts to impart of that great wealth of knowledge at his command. Contained in the tremendous output of poetry by Pro- fessor Markham's illustrious father, Edwin Markham, is a very short poem, the last two lines of which read: But love and I had the wit to win: We drew a circle that drew him in! And just so has Professor Virgil Markham drawn all who know him into his warm circle of friendship and learning. The second annual Campus Community Chest, which had a successful campaign this year, was initiated by a gala Carnival, Wagner's first, under the direction of the Student Christian Association. JOHN LEWIS 69 Aw, IN l93'5 forty young people formed a new organization at Wagner College, the Wagner A Capella Choir. Today the choir has doubled in number, but it has grown more than numerically. Always an active, prominent group, the Wagner College Choir today enjoys a new fame and a broader-than-ever basis of experience. Under its director, Professor John L. Bainbridge, the choir has been heard in numerous, well-received con- certs. Recent tours have taken the choir to upper New York state, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. There are in all choir members the lasting memories of cocoa and cookies at parishioners' homes, sight-seeing tours of Niagara Falls, ancl the enduring gas fumes of Ye Campus Coach . With a repertoire of sacred and secular music, the choir has won the hearts of its listeners on many oc- casions. Whether serious or gay, the students till the music with their own freshness and enthusiasm which will enhance and re-echo in the years to come. 70 pw-S ' ORGANIZED to help serve the spiritual, social, educa- tional and problematic needs of the pre-ministerial students of all denominations at Wagner, the Pre- Seminary Association has held regular monthly meetings, usually with a speaker followed by a discussion. These have included discussions on evangelism, aspects and fields of Christian ministry, the High Church versus the Low Church controversy, and doctrinal differences among the various branches of the Lutheran Church. The year's activities will be culminated in a farewell dinner, in honor of the graduating seniors, to which it is customary to invite the ordained members of the faculty. Officers President . . . . These aims were: to receive a school charter, to form a small but complete Chess library, and to stimulate interest in the game of chess here upon the hill. The club has already been recognized as an organization by the famous Staten Island Chess Club, which is known throughout the Chess World. Having accomplished its preliminary aims and duties, the Chess Club is now concentrating upon forming a Chess Team with which it hopes to engage many of Wagner's traditional rival colleges next semester. The team will revolve around the five strongest players in the organization. This will not only encourage competition in the club itself, but will also act as an incentive as well as a goal for the club members. After a rather un- successful season in '47, the Seahawks managed to break even during last year's play with three wins, three losses and two ties. Big Jim Lee Howell, the Arkansas Traveler, re- turned to the Hill to guide the destiny of the Sea- hawk footballers for the second straight year. He brought with him two former All-Americans: Frank Reagan of the University of Pennsylvania and Jim White of Notre Dame. ln addition to providing good coaching, the Col- lege saw to it that the athletic field was newly sodded for the season. The band, to be exact, in its array of green and white uniforms, paraded up and down in preparation for the then coming season. They afforded the necessary kick for the home team rooters, as did the cheerleaders, and through- out the season were a constant pleasure to watch and hear. On the field of play itself there were crowd pleasers too, especially in the persons of such back- field stars as speedy Jay Quintana, hard-driving Chet Sellitto, diminutive Matty Scaffa, Milt Grosz, Bobby Loggia, and Chris Kartalis. The rest of the team provided its share of good football too: there were men like George Shaffer, Gene Husted, and Big Jim Gilmartin who flanked the line, others like the Kummer twins, Don Hanssen, Walt Stiering, George Henkel, and innumerable others. Last but not least, there were two outstanding performers: Wagner's captain Whitey Drown, and the man elected for the Most Valuable Player Award , stocky Bill Roehrich. COACH JIM LEE HOWELL CAPTAIN WHlTEY DROWN FRANK REAGAN JIM WHITE F The Hawks opened their season at home with a close, but gratifying win over Panzer College to the tune of l4-l2. A brilliant fourth quarter rally sparked by the passing of little Chris Kartalis pro- vided the Seahawks with the margin of victory. Wagner was also at home for the second week of the season, playing host to the heavily favored Flying Dutchmen of Hofstra. Having won 34-O in '47, the visitors were highly favored this season, but a brilliant forty-four yard run by Jay Quintana, and some rugged Wagner line play drew a tie for the home team. The Seahawks then traveled to East Orange, New Jersey where Upsala tripped them up lZ-7. Nobody knows just exactly what went wrong but from the Wagner point of view it was a very dismal showing. The only bright spot in the day for the Seahawks was a hundred and one yard run by the ever-dependable Quintana. The Hawks returned home to face the yellow- clad gridmen of Brooklyn College in what was the fourth game of the season for both teams. Out- played and outgunned, Wagner put up a spirited, but futile fight before going down to defeat. Brook- lyn scored in the first, third and fourth periods, while holding the Seahawks scoreless, to win ZO-O. The fifth game of the season saw Wagner pitted against the Allegarooa from City College in an arc-light affair at Lewisohn Stadium. Chester Sel- litto, the Bronzed Battler , led the Wagner attack. Chester scored all the Hawk touchdowns as they battled City to a l9-l9 tie. There were two interesting sidelights flickering on this game: Sellitto is a transfer student from City, and all of Wagner's three tallies came during the latter half of play. lt seems that the Seahawk squad was habitually overcoming a first half splurge by the opposition in order to tie or win their games. Of course it's more interesting this way, but much more wearing on the hearts of VVagner rooters- there were many new gray hairs seen in the halls of Wagner after every such game. Knowing that the fans were howling for some more sensational play on their parts, and feeling re- vitalized from their tie against the City, the Hawks took the field against Ursinus Bears and sent the latter team to the shower 28-6. The following Saturday afternoon was Homecom- ing Day at Wagner College, and the Hawk players, always eager to please, sent the Alumni home happy with a win against the favored charges of Coach Alonzo Stagg. The Wagner backfield, in its en- tirety, had a field day. The Seahawks donned their traveling togs for a trip to Oneonta, New York, to meet the Hartwick College Indians for the final game of the season. The Wagner defense cracked with only sixty seconds to go in the first half, and the Indians passed for a touchdown. Though the Seahawks over- came the deficit in the third quarter and took the lead on touchdowns by Quintana and Grosz, they were unable to stop a renewed Hartwick attack, and the lads in green came home at the short end of a 25- l 2 score. Though a three, three and two record might, at best, be termed fair the Wagner College football fans, and Wagner College Coaching staff, and the team itself came out of the season feeling refreshed by the excitement of the game, and by the sub- stantial relationships set up by means of the sport itsel . During the course of hardwood operations the Seahawks posted a neat 17 won and 9 lost record, compiled against many of the better small teams in the East and extending into the domain of some of the recognized powers. The i948-49 season will be remembered as the years during which two innovations were made in Wagner basketball circles. The first made its ap- pearance in the form of a road junket through Mary- land on which the Seahawks took the measure of Western Maryland, a quintet which later in the sea- son was destined to make the playoffs of the Mason Dixon Conference, and John Hopkins. The second and most important innovation was in the invitations extended to Wagner College by the Metropolitan Conference Committee, and the Middle Atlantic States Tournament Committee to participate in their respective tournaments. After ll4 JAYH QUlNTANA Captain ta. HERB SUTTER Coach accepting the bids, Wagner bowed out of the Metro- politan Conference in the quarter-finals to Pratt, a team which earlier in the season had been de- feated handily. ln the Middle Atlantic States Tour- nament, however, the Seahawks did much better as they defeated favored Dickinson in the opening round, lost to the ultimate winner of the tournament, Albright, in the semi-finals, and came back to a rousing win over Lebanon Valley in the consolation round. Wagner gained her share of the honors, not only by virtue of finishing third in the tourna- ment, but one of the Seahawks, Jim Gilmartin, Wagner pivotman was awarded the most valuable player award of the tourney. Sparkling throughout the season were Ray Doody and Jay Quintana with their exceptional offensive ability, Wilson Gearhart and Chester Selitto for their agressive all around play, and Bob Blomquist, Jim Gilmartin, and Dick Doremus for their steadiness and splendid rebounding. Rounding out the Varsity squad were Phil Qualben, Ken Laucella, Gerry Ci- cero, and Larry Sweeney and Burgess Coates until they were lost to the team at mid-season. The Wagner Junior Varsity also enjoyed an ex- cellent season as they chalked up an impressive won and lost record. The high scorers for the season were Don Gro- misch and Al Frolander, two Freshmen who are cer- tain to be valuable additions to the varsity next year. Closely following the scoring twins in point pro- duction was Francis Hannigan, whose value also lay in his steadying influence on the team. Frank Lynch and Bob Loggia, whose agressiveness and team play proved invaluable to the quintet, rounded out the starting five. Ziggy Wachsmuth, Tex Hanson, Don Drown, John Bohlken, and Pete Landis were re- serves who contributed no little share to the J. V's successful season. This record compiled against out- standing Eastern, collegiate nines is the best ever chalked up by a Wagner team. After dropping a three hit heartbreaker to Army by a 4-3 count the Suttermen traveled to the Bronx to meet the Violets of New York University. Through outhitting their opponents for the second straight time, the Seahawks' shoddy fielding and pitching wildness offset their lumber ability and sent them down to their second loss of the young season. With these two losses out of their system, the Seahawks embarked on a six game winning skein, numbering among their victims: Stevens Institute, Kings Point, Upsala, St. John's, Montclair State Teachers College, and the Susquehanna Crusaders. This early win streak was brought to a rude close by St. Peter's College of Jersey City, as the Peacocks made their five hits count toward a close victory. Following this loss, the Sea Hawks once again started on a victory string which was to last for seven games. They defeated in turn, St. Francis, Upsala, Drew, St. Peter's, Pratt, Kings Point and St. John's. A hot and cold Brooklyn College team put an end to Wagner's longest win streak, with the aid of six timely hits, and three costly errors on the part of the Green and White infield. After getting back to winning ways against Rut- ger's of Newark in a nip and tuck affair, Wagner went down to an overwhelming defeat at the hands of a Drew University nine which made the most of l5 free passes to walk off with the win. Undaunted by their one-sided defeat in Madison, New Jersey, home of the Drew University team, the Seahawks bounced back to ride the crest of a three game winning effort and close out the season on a highly-successful note, This final streak saw Wag- ner fatten up its record at the expense of the City College Beavers, Montclair State Teachers, and Al- bright of Reading, Pennsylvania. Highlights of the season were varied and numer- ous. Taking first place by far, was the superbly pitched game of Ed Mensing's. ln the second St. Peter's contest, Ed pitched a full ten innings without being reached for a hit or run. His mastery over St. Peter's was dispelled in the top of the eleventh in- ning when they reached him for two hits. However, he still had enough left to set them down scoreless. Then, in the last of the eleventh, Ed gained his well deserved victory when a single, sacrifice bunt that went as a hit. and a scoring fly produced the winning run. Other bright spots in a brilliant season were the fine fielding of Buck Hall, John Garrettson, Tony Crecca, Gwynn Reese and Emil Cenci, the consis- tently good stickwork of Mike Petosa, John Thom- son, and Phil Laub, and the splendid pitching of Bill Willetts, whose record of lO wins and one loss was one of the finest on the eastern coast. The I948 Seahawk nine is to be congratulated for its fine cooperation and team play which along with the guidance of Coach Herbert Sutter, was instru- mental in setting a lofty mark, worthy of emulation by future Wagner Teams. Montclair ., Albright .,..,e, ALTHOUGH the lack of a track caused all their meets to be away from home, the Seahawk track team had a fairly busy season taking part in six dual meets and two relay meets. Their record was 3 and 3 on the dual meets while finishing fourth in the Pennsylvania and Seton Hall mile relays. The fresh- man relay squad took fifth place in the Seton Hall meet. ln the opening meet of the season the City Col- lege Evening sessions played host to the Seahawks at McCombs Park. Wagner came home victorious by the score of 68V2-53V2. Earl Arnold, Bob Winckler and Joe Roggenburg led the point scorers and Larry Fauber romped home easily in the two mile run. Arnold won the 880 and 440 runs and tied for first with Bill Kelly in the pole vault. Winckler won the lOO yard dash and the broad jump and came in second in the l2O yard low hurdles. Roggenburg won the 22O yard run and finished second behind Winckler in the lOO yard dash. Representing Wagner in the Seton Hall relays were Earl Arnold, Joe Roggenburg, Sam Gibson and Frank Larsen on the varsity while Herb Schumann, Jack Schnoor, Bob Winckler and Larry Fauber com- prised the freshman team. ln a final meet against Upsala it was a case of not enough seconds as the Wagner squad took eight out of l4 first places yet lost 68-63 in a bit- terly contested contest. Larry Fauber, Earl Arnold and Joe Roggenburg were high scorers for the Wag- ner cindermen. Larry took the 2 mile run and tied 7aada cmcfeaou for first with Herb Schumann in the mile. Roggen- burg took the 220 and Arnold the half mile. The three then teamed up with Frank Larson to win the mile relay. Other winners for the Hawks were Neil Macintyre low hurdles, Jim Rahman javeline and Nick Baldassano shotput. The Wagner squad bounced back to trounce Brooklyn Poly by a 58-37 count. Winckler, Arnold, Fauber, and Roggenburg continued to be the top point getters as they accounted for six first and two seconds among them. Other firsts were scored by Phil Schick in the shotput and Ted Lovington and George Drews who tied for first in the high jumps. The Seahawk cindermen continued their winning ways, beating St. Peters of Jersey City 7l V2-59V2. George Drews with firsts and Joe Roggenburg and Bob Winckler with two wins each led the Wagner victory. Other Wagner men to place first were Milt Grosz, Jack Schnoor, Larry Fauber, Herb Schumann, Bill Kelly and Phil Schick. In the last meet of the season the Seahawks took a severe trouncing from Montclair State Teachers College losing by an 88-43 score, Larry Fauber took two firsts as did Bob Winckler. Earl Arnold and Milt Grosz each took one first and Wagner took the mile relay, This was the last meet for Bob Sabesen, Captain Earl Arnold and Joe Roggenburg. The leading scorer on the squad during the sea- son was Bob Winckler followed closely by Earl Arnold, Larry Fauber and Joe Roggenburg. Fauber, a long distance runner, was undefeated throughout the year. BUNNY BARBES Coach HELEN TOEBKE Coach JANE STOWELL Captain hal ,, L. THE past season, the fourth year under the capable coaching of Miss Helen Toebke, the Wagner Seahawkettes put up an increasingly well-integrated opposition to oncomers, Each year for the past four, the team has done better and is on its way to becom- ing a formidable opponent to the other schools of the Metropolitan area. Janie Stowell and Pat Townsend were the high- scorer for the season, and made a well-practiced twosome, which was supplemented and speeded up by Julie Kneeshaw, Joan O'Reagan, and Phyllis Mac- Donald. Margaret Christie, veteran guard, became equally valuable this year as a forward, and played both positions during the season: Jane Marsden, a new addition to the team, was also a valuable asset in this way, by playing both forward and guard. A zone defense system was utilized this year with marked success in the ability to block the opposi- tion's easy access to the basket, At the start of the season, the Hawkettes had three seasoned veterans, Elsie Schatz, Gloria Herrada, and Ave Futchs. The loss of Elsie Schatz and Gloria Herrada midway in the season seriously hampered the team for a time, but the three new members, Pat Krumpe, Christine Thing, and Mimi Barden soon consolidated the de- fense again, especially since Pat Krumpe had played on the team two seasons before. The guards showed a quick response and good teamwork in recovering the ball from the backboard and working it up to the forwards. A revision in the rules for girls' basketball has considerably changed the game. A limited dribble, or two bounces, instead of the former rule allowing only one bounce, has made the guards speed up their game to keep up with opposing forwards, and has enabled the forwards to make a more interesting and faster offense. Because of this speeding up, more interest has been added to the slower girls' games from the spectator's point of view. This change has been evident from the larger audiences which attended this year's home games, and from the generally higher scores racked up. For instance, when the 47-42 victory over Long Island University was phoned in to The Times, the paper doubted the validity of such a high score for a girls' game. The team has had a majority of its games away this year, and has traveled a great deal in cars driven by students who volunteered the use of their cars. The last two games of the season were in Pennsylvania, The trip and an overnight stay in Bethlehem ended the season with a bang. lf next year's team keeps up the improvement in standards shown by this year's team, Wagner will have a team to be proud of. i i Miken! From a group of almost thirty-five students Competing for a position on this squad, twelve girls were chosen as representative of top school spirit, Miss Toebke, Mr. Sutter, and a committee of students chose these girls for their pep, originality, co-ordination, and enthusiasm, The girls, with the help of Miss Toebke, their adviser, made their own uniforms, created new and better cheers and formations and have done much to in- still wholesome pep and school spirit for the teams.
