Below: The successful Wadsworth High School marching band marches proudly near the head of the Wadsworth Week Parade in the summer of '81 The annual Great Balloon Race is a popular event in Wadsworth and many citizens gather outside at the airport and around their homes to take pic- tures or just to watch. What a colorful spectacle to see so many balloons bursting into the sky, the colors bright against the blue of summer. Rising . . . rising . . . above the treetops . . . float- ing free as a bird . . . making no noise except for the occasional sound of the hot air blowing that peps them up. The students at Wadsworth High School also take on the challenge to RISE ABOVE THE REST and often succeed, coming through with flying colors. Above 8 Center: Tony Perry's balloon is being raised with much effort in the school's front yard, and some people are lucky enough to get a ride. Creme De La Creme Even in this small, tucked away town of Wads- worth, Ohio there are some outstanding people. Physics and Physical Science teacher, Larry Varner, was asked to be in an expedition to Ant- arctica. This continent is a closed one. only se- lected scientists and government workers are al- lowed to be there. The temperatures of the conti- nent when Mr. Varner is there will be from O degrees F to 40 degrees F. Also they will have 24 hours of daylight. His team will live in a tent while working in a valley that no one has walked in before, according to Varner. Right. lnvolved in this experiment, Mr. Varner is re- warded for his many other intensive studies by being asked to participate in an excursion to Antarctica. Top Right. Although looking a little dense at the mon- ent, Greg Schenz placed well in the American History Contest. -fg..5.- I 9 , H tf The two above photos: John Gruver and Chris Carrino were PSAT semi-finalists. John Gruver and Chris Carrino were the only PSAT semi-finalists at this school. There were six other students who received letters of commen- dation. As history is a subject of special interest to senior Greg Schenz, he was chosen by Mr. Horris- berger to take the American History Contest. He scored highest of all the participating students in Medina County. As a result, he went to Ohio Uni- versity to take the final essay exam.
