'l'he resistance to lie hur in this and future generations against the menace nf dictatorship in its proposed reconquest of world will stem chiefly from the strength and the clarity uf thinking of the .Xmerican citizen. schools are to help in defense of the democratic ideal, their purposes must lie dehned in terms that ideal, and their activities must lie resolutely directed toward it. XYhen the schools closed liriday evening, llecemher 5, they had many purposes and they ful lowed many roads to achieve those purposes. When the l'earl llarlinr attack occurred and , schools opened on Monday, llecemlier b, they had just one dominant purpose --complete. inte gent, and enthusiastic co-operation in war etfort. The very existence of free schools anywhere in the world depends upon the achievement of that policy. It is already clear that many educational adaptations are required. Some aspects of education will need to lie strength- ened and extended. Uther aspects, perhaps some very im- portant ones in times of peace. may he curtailed or postponed in order that all educational efforts may he applied at the points of greatest need. ln view of the emergency today, the secondary schools need to l I J kindle in the minds of men and women the need to accept great responsibilities: 1.23 redoulmle in their efforts to promote in every practicalile way the lietter health and nutrition and the greater physical vigor of our population: 455 intensify their elforts to train both youth and adults for war industries and services: 143 take steps to insure the regular organized study and discussion of the issues, aims. and progress of the war and the peace: t 55 take special effort to preserve our American heritage: UU and inculcate in the minds of young and old alike the desire to want for other peoples priceless privileges we enjoy.
