THE STAIRS There wasn'f a denf in fhe sfairs of Wadleigh, for fhe year was l900. and bofh Wadleigh and fhe sfairs were new. The counfless fread of fhousands of feef had nof,yef made ifs inevifable impression upon fhem. Oh, whaf fales fhese sfairs could fell if only fhey could falkl Harkl One is speaking, and fhe sfory unfolds: My hearf is Iighf and gay, for I am new. Ah, whaf a fhrilling life I shall live! Two girls are fripping lighfly down. They are walking on me. They are dressed in fhe Iafesf fashions: fheir high buffoned shoes, fheir busfles, fheir hair piled in pompadour sfyle make me know fhaf fhey are indeed fashionable young ladies. Their falk is frivolous, fhe usual chaffer of high school girls. Nofhing consequenfial. Time marches on. l90I, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Alasl A finy disfigurafion has appeared in me, nof a very large one, buf one iusf fhe same. ls if any wonder, for remember fhaf many girls have walked over me. I908, 9, I0. The sfyles of women's clofhes have changed somewhaf: no longer are fhey wearing big busfles, and fheir skirfs are a liffle shorfer, and fhe wound in my side has grown deeper. The years pass very unevenffully unfil I9I4. The girls' chaffer has become excifed. They are speculafing on fhe possibilify of fhe Unifed Sfafes enfering fhe war. I9I5, I6, fhe Unifed Sfafes has nof yef enfered fhe war, buf everyone is filled wifh dread. I9I7. We are now af war. The girls make bandages and knif socks, efc., for our boys. I feel fhaf fhe American soldiers over fhere are my boys foo, because fhey are fhe brofhers and sweefhearfs of fhe girls who fread on me. I9I8, a glad year. The war is over. The whole school is permeafed wifh ioy, and fhe ioy could be reflecfed in me, buf my sore, fesfered by I8 long years of hardships, has increased considerably. I92l and women suffrage.
