It is with regret that we leave our past but with faith that we strive to even greater heights. The going so far has not been easy; there have been times when we stumbled along the way. Our teachers and our friends were always there to help. Life is not a glass staircase. ' There are splinters and ragged edges; but with each experience, we learn how to climb unharmed andto face the world unafraid. These are the stairs we looked longingly at before entering high school, as well as with fear our first day as freshmen. With tears in our hearts and pride in our walk, we descended gradu- ation night, never again to ascend them as students. And yet, the stairs remain, a sym- bol that we have greater heights to ob- tain. To you, the Seniors of '61, this year's Tiger Tales is dedicated. Through it we hope you can look where you have already been--through precious memories. Nevertheless, wecannot climb backwards, only forward. Dedication We pay tribute to you as one of the most devoted members of the Wadesboro High School faculty. As we have taken each step toward adulthood, you have always been by our side to help us and to lift us when we stumble. You have been wherever we needed you to guide us, advise us, and whennecessary, to push us toward our goals. In sincere appreciation for your guidance, patience, and friendship during the last four years, we, the seniors of 1961, dedicate the Tiger Tales to you, Mrs. Mildred Johnson. MR. W. L. As spring approached, they were busy making plans for Junior-Senior. They turned the Central School Auditorium and Cafeteria into a beautiful Southern Garden. , The class enjoyed a year of fun but it was also a year of work to prepare them for the last flight of steps which would lead them to graduation--the end of their high school life. 42 ASS If only our fingers would go where we tell History in the Shelton Style. Waddell Ted Welch Marsha Wilkes Harry Williamson Lou Wright ® On September 2, the Freshman class of 1961 climbed their first flight of stairs into a wonderful and exciting world of high school. Those first few days were full of excitement and anticipation. This was a drastic change from junior highand a wonderful change at that. The things that appealed to every- one, most of all, was changing classes and feeling independent. A number of students joined clubs that were offered. They found these quite enjoy- able. One of the high-lights for Freshman girls was ''Freshman Week . This was the initiation into the Future Homemakers of America. The week was full of things planned by upper classmen and ended with ' 'Hobo Day . This was the first year they had taken part in Homecoming. They really enjoyed decorating floats and participating in the parade. They were especially proud to have Pat Eddins represent the Freshman Class during the Homecoming festivities. Junior Varsity cheerleaders were chosen in the early fall. They led cheers and helped boost the team at Junior Varsity football and basketball games. Their freshman year has been a perfect example of high school and left them with a great anticipation of the other three flights of high school. 50 Class It's hard to understand how Russia beat us to the moon. Wadesboro Gigers The Tigers, losing seventeen seniors from last year, were underrated in the Confer- ence this year. At the beginning of the season the Tigers proved that they were not the weaklings they were called. When they met powerful Massey Hill, the Tigers romped to victory 19-0. The second game of the season proved to be the unlucky No. 2 as it has been for the Tigers the past three years. The Tigers swallowed a 19-7 loss to the 4A South Mecklenburg. They came back to topple Catholic High the following week 27-13, with Coach Ray Shelton clearing the bench. . The fourth game of the season was the important one because it was with Lumberton, the first conference game of the season. The Tigers squeezed through with a 14-6 victory over the Pirates. Next week Wadesboro really fought to bring home a 13-12 win over Rohanen. Monday afternoon, the following week, the injury riddled Tigers prepared to meet Rockingham, the leaders of the Conference, our arch-rival. On the Friday the game was played, it was raining and the field was muddy. The Tigers could not muster enough steam and gave the Rockets an open track. The mangled Tigers, not being at full strength the remainder of the season, managed to win only one of the four remaining games. The Homecoming game with Sanford was a rough game with Wadesboro going down 20-6. The team showed fine sportsmanship throughout the season; although the going got rough, everyone stuck with it. The football players had their banquet January16. Thespeaker was Clyde B. ''Peahead ' Walker, a former college coach and now scoui for the professional New York Giants. The bright orange fish added much color to the parade. No one was surprised to hear they were one of the first place winners, Miss Jessie Ruth Honeycutt's Senior homeroom float was another first place winner. Thetheme of the float was ''The Only Good Bug isa Dead Bug. ’ On it was a giant can of Tiger bug killer and a huge dead yellowjacket which represented the opposing team, A giant stork carrying a football in its beak, stood on Mrs. Robert McCue's Junior homeroom float. The theme, We're Expecting A Victory,'' increased the spirit of the spectators. They well deserved tying for first place. Activities Homecoming dawned at Wades- boro High School on October 28. School was dismissedattwo o'clock in order for students to finish last minute preparations on their floats. The parade began at 4:30. It was the longest parade ever, and many bystanders commented that it was the best. Every high school home room entered a float to be judged in the competition. The Civitan Club had a. pancake supper immediately following the parade. Many local people attended before going to the football game. The players came onto the field and Sart broke the sign which showed a pic- yer) ture of the victory bell. This started the 1960 Homecoming game. At the half-time ceremonies, Gail Brower was crowned queen by Superintendent W. L. Wildermuth. The band presented a special musi- cal program. And as Auld Lang Syne was played, many seniors, with mixed emotions, looked back over their life in Wadesboro High. The game ended in a score of 20-Oin favor of Sanford, but the excitement lingeredon. The Homecoming Dance was held in the auditorium of Cen- tral Elementary School. It was attended by many students, alumni, and members of the faculty of Wades- bee esrecnicst sad boro High. The Homecoming queen reigned over the dance froma special throne. Thefirst drama attempted by a senior class inmany years was directed by Mrs. Bob McCue. Rosemary Allen, playing the role of Jane Eyre, a governess, captured the audi- ence with her adept performance. Mr. Rochester, the master of Thornfield Hall and Jane's lover, was played by Steve James. They were ably assisted by members of the supporting cast. Possibly the role capturing the most interest was that of the mad woman portrayed by Hilda Little. This part added both sus- pense and excitement to the love story. Mrs. Fairfax, housekeeper of Thorn- field was played by Margaret Simmons. She conveyed the feeling that her character was an immaculate and efficient lady who could keep things to herself. Joyce Wilkes por- trayed the part of Leah, a young, rather talkative housemaid with a kind heart and a tendency toward superstition. Susan Little,as Grace Poole, a staid and taciturn -looking woman, played this mys- terious and nervous woman with understand- ing. Adele, Mr. Rochester's young ward, was played by Rose Marie Whisnant. Marsha Tucker acted the part of Lady Ingram, a tall imposing woman witha haughty manner. Her daughter Blanche, portrayed by Gail Brower, was very vain. Mary, Lady Ingram's small, slim, lighthearted, gay, and coquettish daughter, was played by Mararuth Cox. Calvin Rushing acted as Frederick Logan, Mary's faithful admirer. The villain of the play, Mr. Mason, was played by Joe V. Capell. Ronald Williamson portrayed Mr. Wood, the clergyman. The stage and costumes of the charac- ters were reminiscent of the 1840's. So the senior actors, actresses, and crewmen exer- cised their talents in presenting a play of another century as well as a drama. Allthe members ofthe senior class par- ticipated behind the scenes. The stage settings, costumes, make up, publicity, and business were all handled by the seniors. ee ee ee Peggy Ratliff CAROUSEL PRINCESS MISS HI MISS D.A.R.
