ALLEN CLASS HISTORY “We'll remember always, graduation day’—the song continues but our school days are fast drawing to a close, Graduation will cling to our minds as the happiest part of our school career, but inside we will treasure the many little things that went to make our younger years something to remember forever. We will be sad when we leave our school, but it has been a happy experience that we, the class of ’57, have shared to- gether. ANN L. CoviNGcTOoN MartTHa DEESE As we take the key and unlock the clasp of our memory book, we turn to the first page and see Mrs. Liles, Miss Plunkett, and Mrs. McKinnon waiting for us on that memorable day in September 1945, when a_ very grown-up group of youngsters entered the first step of adulthood. That year we settled many difficulties and became involved in many more. HERMAN LyNwoop Dryer SarRA ELLEN ATKINSON MARGARET EDDINS. BENJAMIN BRASINGTON BarBAaRA FE. FAULKNER ELIZABETH ANN BUFF Our second year brought many spelling words and our first sweethearts. Our third year was passed with the great expectation of becoming fourth graders and the oldest primary building. Too soon, it seemed as if we were progressing farther and farther. We found ourselves in the fifth grade with a new way of school before us. We ran every time a in the BRENDA JEAN FAULKNER Patricia ANN Burns VERNON W, Grabdy LErroy CARTER high school student looked our way, but secretly we admired them as if they were made of pure gold. The pages of our memory book are turning fast, but we stop, and happy thoughts come our way as we see the picture of Mrs. Gulledge and Mrs. Huntley, our exceptional seventh grade teachers. We were rapidly growing up and were a problem in many ways, but we emerged as fine eighth grade students. GARDNER SENIOR CLASS Mrs. Gaddy and Mrs. Roper did everything but pour knowledge into our heads the following year. We were hanging on the precipice of remaining young or forging ahead into our much longed for high school days. At last we were seen with small but significant certificates in our hands. During these years, our memory book added many new faces, and many more welcomed us as we entered high CHARLES B. HiILpRetTH RisDEN HAMILTON HILt. SHIRLEY GATEWOOD school. We were sorrowful whenever we lost someone from our class but happy to gain someone new. We were “lowly Freshmen,” but even to be recognized as such was better than not being recognized at all. Our sophomore year, we were gradually finding the pieces of the puzzle did fit together. Our class was taking its place and beginning to make advances, Our junior year was a highlight of all of our preceding HazEL ANNETTE HorRNE MARY GaATHINGS Joan HuFFMAN LouisE ANITA HAMER EpirH HutTCHIsON Mary Eva HarkKEY years and our memory book is crowded with pictures of evening gowns, corsages, and white dinner jackets. We felt we were the only ones in the school who had ever given a good Junior-Senior, or who ever would. That was a climax to our hard fought years of work, for this year we feel a little apart from the rest of the school. Not in the sense that we are separate, but the fact that we have obligations which only we can fulfill. Diana SUE JENKINS JANICE HARRINGTON CAROLYN Rose HILDRETH With the help of our advisor, our much loved Miss Carrie Sturgis, we are preparing for greater heights. We have set our goal, and set it high, so that we, the class of 1957, will always be striving upward. With this in mind, our memory book closes with a final page that has written on it, “Well done, class of °57.” JEAN FAULKNER, Historian Doris JEAN JONES SENIOR - CLASS MARGARET ELLEN KELLY LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT The seniors listed below do leave with gracious feelings to the underclassmen their different abilities hoping they will develop some of them and forget the rest. KEYHOLDERS Those who possess certain intangible keys possess the mystic powers of opening doors to new activities, per- sonalities, opportunities, and even destinies. Though every member of the senior class did not have everyone of these keys, each did have at least one. A perfect key- -holder would be... Witty Katie Robeson, Martha Deese, Brantley Teal, and Jerry Lovett played the role of court jesters quite well. Pleasing Personality Hazel Horne, Peggy Polson, and Charles Hildreth were “happy as larks’”’ and made everyone else feel that way. Original Diana Jenkins, Charles Tucker, .and Larry Rogers had frequent brainstorms which developed into shocking ideas 23 Energetic “And away we go with Margaret Eddins, Edith Hutchison and Tommy Taylor. Friendly Peggy Welch, Joan Huffman, and John Williams enjoyed chats on the front steps. Versatile “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again,’ was the motto of Missy Allen, Barbara Faulkner, and Buck Kitchin. Cute Mary Eva Harkey, Louise Treadaway, and Grady Carter were “cute as pie” chatting on the porch. Conscientious Ann Covington, Jackie Ormsby, and Brent Mudd never put off till the morrow what they could have done today. 24 Well Dressed Janice Harrington, Jean Faulkner, Lynwood Drye, and Flake Marsh were always spruced up for every gala occasion. Courteous “The days of chivalry are not dead,” says Hayward Morrison to Sara Atkinson, Doris Jones, and Pat Burns. Co-operative Mary Gathings, Carolyn Hildreth, Eugene Pegram, and Tommy Redmon agree that “a chain is as strong as its weakest link.” Sincere “To thine own self be true” was the motto of Libby Buff, Shirley Gatewood, V. W. Gardner, and Benjy Brasington. Athletic Anita) Hamer, Rachel Turner, Jimmy Webb, and Richard Brower went out for sports in a big way. 25 SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY The lights overhead were spinning round and round, and suddenly I found myself in a deep sleep. New surroundings came to focus. ner, Math teacher, Shirley Gatewood, English teacher, Mary Gathings, French Teacher, Hazel Horne, Home Economics teacher, and Rachel fuprer, Physical Education teacher. After taking out my keys and locking up Myo studio, I went to the air terminal, boarded the rocketship, and looked around«My first trip to Mars. How nice it would be to try my fashions on the pioneers of this planet. As I sat down in my seat I looked at my calen- dar. “My goodness ié it June 6, 19672” I thought. When I settled down, two lovely rocket hostess- es offered me pillows. As I thanked them, I realized that these girls were Marietta Ward and Edith Hutchinson, two of my school chums from “ole W.H.S.” Why I hadn't seen them in nearly ten years. I talked to the girls until duty called them. I learned fro m the talk that the pilot of the rocket was Tommy Redman with Hayward Morrison, co-pilot, What a coincidence! I also learned that the master minds, who designed and constructed the. rocket, were none other than Jerry Lovett, Lary Rogers, and Charles Hildreth. ' As my trip continued, someone turned on a portable T.V. set. I became interested in the program, which was “Music By Allen.” As I be- came ingrossed, I realized that the star was another old classmate, Missy Allen. During in- termission on the program I noticed the clever advertising and witty cartoons. Who had done such a good job? Of course, it was Benjy Bras- ington and Margaret Eddins, two more of my old school chums. Next on the iON schedule was a baseball game. As the game progressed, I found that Grady Carter was pitcher for the leading team and Richard Brower outfielder. on When I finally landed on Mars, I ame dately is began my tour of the planet.
