CLASS HISTORY “School days, school days, happy Golden Rule days” . . . so go the words of the song, and as we look back over the years, we realize that our school days have been happy days. Many pleasant memories still come to us as we think of the years we have spent in school. Our minds go back to September, 1945, when we began our first year of school. My! How anxious we were to get to school that morning. We felt as though the most important thing in our young lives was about to take place. Here, we met our teach- ers, the ones under whose careful guidance and instructions we would receive our first taste of learning. 4 A year passed, and this time we were getting ready for an- other milestone in our lives. This was the second grade, and we began to learn more about reading and arithmetic. Weren't we proud when we no longer had to print, but could write our names just like Mommy and Daddy wrote theirs! MARGARET EDWARDS Class Historian Another year, and we were facing our third grade in school. Here we were introduced to geography. Were we thrilled at the thought of taking up that brand new subject! Fourth grade, and we realized that soon we would be leaving the old school building where we had spent four enjoyable years. Next came our big year. We were going to be with the “‘big’’ boys and girls! Weren't we excited as we Stood in front of the High School building and waited to be admitted? We’ll never forget that day. The following year we went on to the sixth grade. Those history and geography tests still haunt our memory. Seventh grade. This year was a big one for us. Everyone remembers the Puppet Show, “‘King Ar- thur and His Knights,’’ that we gave. Some of us were lucky enough to serve as marshals for the eighth grade commencement. We'll never forget our eighth year. This was the end of our grammar grade life, and the begin- ning of our most enjoyable years of school. . . the last ones. Our trip to Raleigh highlighted our eighth grade year. We still remember the good times we had rehearsing for commencement. Poor Mrs. Roper! | can still hear her pleading with us to pay strict attention to her instructions, lest we ruin our gradua- tion by some careless mistake. But everything turned out fine, and as we received our certificates, we realized that this was another milestone. High School would come next. Our Freshman year! We really felt ‘“grown up’ changing classes, but all of this ended in a few days, when the upper classmen began to call us ‘lowly Freshmen.” It was hard to adjust ourselves to high school life. Everything seemed to end in utter confusion, but somehow we lived through it. Then we went into our Sophomore year. We would no longer be looked upon as “‘lowly.’’ We had worked hard for a year and had “earned” our place in High School. Now, we felt a sense of belonging, and fitting in with the crowd. Soon we were Juniors. Eleven years of school . . . and this was the year that most of us got our first taste of foreign language. Our Junior-Senior Banquet was a big event for us. Didn’t we have fun decorating the gym and cutting classes to make sure everything would be ready on that big night? Our last and best year has arrived. Now we are Seniors, the oldest members of Wadesboro High School, and looked upon by everyone with a great deal of respect. We even have certain privileges, such as being the last to enter chapel and the first to leave on Assembly Day. (Just had to mention this privilege because it’s the only one we have.) This year, one of our classmates, Miss Carolyn Carter, went to Charlotte as Carrousel Princess for the second time. We were really proud of Carolyn when it was announced that she will reign as Queen Carrousel X next year. Under the leadership of our capable class officers and our dear Miss Sturgis, we were guided through our Senior year . . . the most wonderful year yet. As the years pass, many will forget the class of ‘56, as others have been forgotten. Perhaps we are not the greatest Senior Class of Wadesboro High School, but this has been a wonderful year for all of us, and others may forget the good times we’ve had, but as we go out into the world to face the future, we shall always remember the class of ‘56, and shall strive to contribute something worth- while to our most memorable year of all... our Senior year. - 24

Filled with enthusiasm and zeal, the Junior Class began the year by selling more magazine subscriptions than any other previous class. The total sales amounted to $1,600.57 with Betsy Kiker high salesman. The ordering and receiving of class rings and the planning for Junior-Senior were exciting events which highlighted the year. ‘‘Missy’’ Allen and Hazel Horne performed as cheerleaders while Mary Eva Harkey served as a majorette and sponsor for homecoming. Several other members of the class participated in foot- ball, baseball, and basketball games and still others were members of va- rious clubs. With Mr. Merritt Robinson and Miss Patsy Harmon as sponsors, the class enjoyed a year of work and fun. 26
