Cass History Betty Ann Wall Historian This is the tale of the Senior Class that en- tered Wadesboro High School in 1935. Their scholastic history began early in September, when as a rather awed group of boys and girls they formed the fi rst grade. To them it was an important day in their lives. Fortunately for these students they were welcomed by teachers gifted with gentleness and patience, Mrs. Joe Liles and Miss Mary Plunkett, who guided them into the world of learning and the routine of school life. They took with them into the next few years the first principles of knowledge, but Mrs. Chase Baughn, Mrs. W. L. McKinnon, Miss Julia Cameron, Mrs. Elinor Gray, and Miss Barbara Weir, their teachers during these impressionable years, led them through new problems and into greater confidence, so when they left the gram- mar school to enter the fifth grade in the high school building, it was with a reliable founda- tion and an eagerness to advance. No outstanding events made the fifth year of school a ‘‘to be remembered” one for these boys and girls. Capably and quietly, Miss Pauline Pinkston and Mrs. Heck Allen directed them through that year. Miss Nora Boggan and Mrs. W. W. Bennett led them thru’ wider fields of knowledge in the sixth grade in preparation for Junior High. Day by day, and almost without realizing it, these students were making this his- tory. Their entrance into Junior High brought changes which made them feel important in- deed. For it was a novel experience to have two teachers in the same grade, Mrs. W. J. Gulledge and Miss Lillian Cunningham. Their talents and minds developed under them. The next year brought other changes. Their teachers in the eighth grade were Miss Hermine Caraway, Mrs. Tom Wal!!, Mrs. Elizabeth Mer- ritt, Mr. W. F. Warlick, Miss Mildred Allen, and Mr. J. Ray Shelton. The new experience of changing classes was of great significance to them. But of still greater importance was their graduation to high school at the culmination of their eight years work. The old order changed and the members of the Class of ’47 were Freshmen. Though having reached this estate, they felt very fearful and inexperienced in the ways of high school life. However, Miss Octavia Temple, Mrs. George Huntley, Miss Blanche Banta, Mr. Shelley Cashion, Mrs. Tom Wall, and Mr. J. Ray Shelt- on introduced them to Latin, Algebra and other new subjects and different schedules. They became better acquainted with Mr. V. W. Lewis, their Superintendent, and Mr. W. B. Terrell, principal. High school work was not easy, but during the next year, as Sophomores, they worked diligent- ly under Miss Blanche Banta, Miss Hermine Caraway, Mr. W. N. Hix, Mrs. George Miller, and Coach Shelton. It was only a year from the state of Sopho- mores to Juniors. The 1945-46 term was mem- orable to them all. Mr. W. B. Terrell had be- come Superintendent and Mr. B. P. Robinson had taken his place as Principal. Other counsel- ors that year were Miss Hermine Caraway, Mr. W. ON. Hix, Mrs) BY Px Rebinsone) ts Genk Craig, Mrs. Elsie Lee Carricker, Miss Francis Moore, Mrs. L. A. Weddington, and Mr. Al Paling. It was a busy year.. There was a great deal to be done outside their studies in extra-curric- ular activities. Some began working on the “Student Prints” staff, some joined the ‘“Hi- Ways” staff, many engaged in various forms of athletics, while still others sought membership in the school clubs. In February, the Juniors presented a play entitled “Phere Goes the Bride”’ and later in the year, as is the age old custom at Wadesboro High, they entertained the Sen- iors at a Junior-Senior Banquet. The Citizen- ship Cup which is presented yearly to the out- standing Junior was awarded to Neale Kelly. All of these events helped make their Junior year a happy one. In September, 1946, they were Seniors in name and in right; one comes to this position only thru effort and determination. Miss Car- rie Sturgis, Senior sponsor, guided and directed them in all their activities. Mr. W. L. Wilder- muth, who had returned as principal after sever- al years service overseas, Mrs. Tom Wall, Miss Norma Smoak, Mrs. Al Paling. Miss Mary Alice Turner, and Mrs. G. K. Craig were faculty mem- bers who helped in many ways. The Seniors had much to do. This was their last year in high school and they were the lead- (Continued on Page 42) Page Ten
