Their scholastic history began early in September, when as a rather awed group of boys and girls they formed the fi rst grade. To them it was an important day in their lives. Fortunately for these students they were welcomed by teachers gifted with gentleness and patience, Mrs. Joe Liles and Miss Mary Plunkett, who guided them into the world of learning and the routine of school life. They took with them into the next few years the first principles of knowledge, but Mrs. Chase Baughn, Mrs. W. L. McKinnon, Miss Julia Cameron, Mrs. Elinor Gray, and Miss Barbara Weir, their teachers during these impressionable years, led them through new problems and into greater confidence, so when they left the gram- mar school to enter the fifth grade in the high school building, it was with a reliable founda- tion and an eagerness to advance. No outstanding events made the fifth year of school a ‘‘to be remembered” one for these boys and girls. Capably and quietly, Miss Pauline Pinkston and Mrs. Heck Allen directed them through that year. Miss Nora Boggan and Mrs. W. W. Bennett led them thru’ wider fields of knowledge in the sixth grade in preparation for Junior High. Day by day, and almost without realizing it, these students were making this his- tory. Their entrance into Junior High brought changes which made them feel important in- deed. For it was a novel experience to have two teachers in the same grade, Mrs. W. J. Gulledge and Miss Lillian Cunningham. Their talents and minds developed under them. The next year brought other changes. Their teachers in the eighth grade were Miss Hermine Caraway, Mrs. Tom Wal!!, Mrs. Elizabeth Mer- ritt, Mr. W. F. Warlick, Miss Mildred Allen, and Mr. J. Ray Shelton. The new experience of changing classes was of great significance to them. But of still greater importance was their graduation to high school at the culmination of their eight years work. The old order changed and the members of the Class of ’47 were Freshmen. Though having reached this estate, they felt very fearful and inexperienced in the ways of high school life. However, Miss Octavia Temple, Mrs. George Huntley, Miss Blanche Banta, Mr. Shelley Cashion, Mrs. Tom Wall, and Mr. J. Ray Shelt- on introduced them to Latin, Algebra and other new subjects and different schedules. They became better acquainted with Mr. V. W. Lewis, their Superintendent, and Mr. W. B. Terrell, principal. High school work was not easy, but during the next year, as Sophomores, they worked diligent- ly under Miss Blanche Banta, Miss Hermine Caraway, Mr. W. N. Hix, Mrs. George Miller, and Coach Shelton. It was only a year from the state of Sopho- mores to Juniors. The 1945-46 term was mem- orable to them all. Mr. W. B. Terrell had be- come Superintendent and Mr. B. P. Robinson had taken his place as Principal. Other counsel- ors that year were Miss Hermine Caraway, Mr. W. ON. Hix, Mrs) BY Px Rebinsone) ts Genk Craig, Mrs. Elsie Lee Carricker, Miss Francis Moore, Mrs. L. A. Weddington, and Mr. Al Paling. It was a busy year.. There was a great deal to be done outside their studies in extra-curric- ular activities. Some began working on the “Student Prints” staff, some joined the ‘“Hi- Ways” staff, many engaged in various forms of athletics, while still others sought membership in the school clubs. In February, the Juniors presented a play entitled “Phere Goes the Bride”’ and later in the year, as is the age old custom at Wadesboro High, they entertained the Sen- iors at a Junior-Senior Banquet. The Citizen- ship Cup which is presented yearly to the out- standing Junior was awarded to Neale Kelly. All of these events helped make their Junior year a happy one. In September, 1946, they were Seniors in name and in right; one comes to this position only thru effort and determination. Miss Car- rie Sturgis, Senior sponsor, guided and directed them in all their activities. Mr. W. L. Wilder- muth, who had returned as principal after sever- al years service overseas, Mrs. Tom Wall, Miss Norma Smoak, Mrs. Al Paling. Miss Mary Alice Turner, and Mrs. G. K. Craig were faculty mem- bers who helped in many ways. The Seniors had much to do. This was their last year in high school and they were the lead- (Continued on Page 42) Page Ten Page Eleven PAUL RICHA RD ADCOCK____ “Paul” DIONE ere nee SHO) jewelry store Safety Patrol 2, 3, 4, Industrial Arts 3, Physical Education 3. Page Seventeen Last Wil aud “Jestament To All Whom This May Concern We, the seniors of 1947, of Wadesboro High School, being of unsound mind and body, and having succeeded in deceiving the faculty with our apparent intelligence, declare ourselves leg- ally able to make this last and only will and testament, and do hereby bequeath, give, donate, present, grant, offer, and bestow the following: To Mr. Terrell, our ever wise-cracking super- intendent, we leave our deepest appreciation for being the only person able to make us feel su- perior, and also our hopes that we have not run him completely crazy. To Mr. Wildermuth, our principal, we leave our most sincere appreciation and thanks for all of his help. To Miss Sturgis, our understanding teacher, we leave all our love for her faithful guidance over the last year of our high school life. To the faculty, our heartfelt thanks for all the help that they tried to give us—and our humble apologies for being co far from a model class. To the Junior Class, we leave the honor of dusting the front rows in chapel and the privil- ege of using the front steps at recess. I, Lois Talent, do leave my reputation of being the first engaged Senior to the Junior girl who can do as well. I, Jimmy Clark, do leave my quiet manner to Coot Huntley. I, Lu Overton, do leave my knack for asking dumb questions to Mary Scarboro. I, Agnes Crawford, do leave my size to Dor- othy Griggs. I, Niley Hill, do leave my studious mind to Lib Hyatt. ANN LINDSEY Testator I, Myrtle McLendon, do leave my sweet dis- position to Betty Treadaway. We. Edna Moore and Frances Burns, do leave our jobs at Roses to anyone who will have them. I, Barbara Odom, do leave my ability to get money for ads to the next business manager of the annual. I, Tom Hart, do leave my love for girls to Harry Huntley. We, Neale Kelly and H. M. Maples, do leave our bang-up skill of driving to Vander Warner and Bill Taft. I, Betty Ruth Gaddy, do leave my ability to play basketball to Nell Lowe. We, Bill Hough, Herbert Jerman, and Don- ald Stiles, do leave our height to Dick Liles and Lewis Flack. I, Janet Long, do leave my ability to preside over the senior class to the president of the class of 1948. We, Louise Covington and Carol Dean Jen- rette, do leave our good friendship to Mary and Betty Smith. We, Lois Jean Ashcraft and Louise Anderson, do leave our ability to talk incessantly and most- ly about nothing to Nell Lowe and Doris Scott. I, Shannon Davidson, do leave my book of excuses for unprepared lessons to Coot Huntley. I, Carol Milks, do leave my hair styles to Doris Rogers. I, Bet Wall, do leave my ability to say “twen- ty and twelve” to anybody that can’t talk plain. I, Ann Lindsey, having no special talent, do leave my love and best wishes to all the gals and guys in Wadesboro High. In witness thereof, we hereunto affix our hand, fingerprints, and seal, jump up and down and stamp upon this, our last will and testament and hope to high heavens no one will bear us any erudges. Signed the first day of June in the year of our Lord, One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty-seven. THE CLAss OF 1947 Page Twenty NEALE KELLY Prophet On the night of January 6, 1947, the problem of writing a prophecy confronted me. I sat quietly at my desk pondering my _ problem. Thinking maybe music would help my slow pro- cess of thinking, I tuned the radio to some soft classical music. Lulled by the soft tones of the music and by the heat of the open fire, I laid my head upon the desk. Then it seemed as if I were no longer at a desk writing . . . Before me fleecy white clouds of time drifted by, blown here and there by a gentle wind. The scene changed . . . I was surrounded by a city entirely different from any I had ever seen before; huge buildings, and impressive shops flanked the wide tree-lined streets. I had a pause to collect my thoughts and examine my first impressions of this “wonderland of archi- tecture’ —Words cannot express the awe and beauty of this progressive city, which even in modernistic setting seemed to contain an air of compactness and friendliness. What strange sort of a dreamland was this? Then suddenly it came to me, I was standing on the corner of Wade and Greene Streets in Wadesboro, N. C. Beside me a huge building was under construc- tion. Glancing at the newly-laid corner-stone, I read the inscription, “Hart Building, Built 1962.” So this is what Wadesboro would look like, THIS WAS THE FUTURE!! Hanging from the buildi ng was a sign, “THIS BUILDING WILL SOON BE OCCUPIED BY HART CLOTHING COMPANY—McLaurin Shaver Construction Co. Electrical Contractor— Paul Adcock.” Seeing these names recalled to me the class of 1947, and hoping to find some of my former classmates, I walked over to the tall, slim policeman who was standing on the corner. As he turned around I recognized him at a glance, “Rod” Hough!!! Bill pointed out to me several shops which were owned and operated by some of our class- mates. On the corner opposite us was the drug store which was run by Herbert Jarmen. Beside the drug store was a hat an d dress shop owned by Alberta Parker and Rosa Birmingham. Gwen Smith and Cherrie Pratt operated the beauty Class Prophecy shop across the street, and the modern ten cent store was owned and managed by Carol Dean Jenrette. The fancy sporting goods store had just been opened by “Hook” Coggin and Fred Waddell. As we stood there talking, a disting- uished looking Buick went through a “stop light.” Bill blew his whistle and flagged the car to the curb. He reminded the woman that this was the fifth time that he had stopped her for this offense. As I glanced at the driver I recognized her as our Senior Class President of long ago. I later learned from Bill that Janet had married a rich man and lived in a luxurious home in the mountains! I invited “Rod” to enjoy a milk shake with me and give me the latest news about the rest of our classmates. Bill thanked me but replied that he would have to stay on duty. He suggest- ed that I talk to “Bet” Wall, the editor of the M I, who could give me the latest news about our friends. I decided to visit “Bet,” but first I would visit the “drug” and see if any of the gang were there. I was disappointed because I did not see any I recognized except Myrtle McLendon, who was behind the soda fountain. As I walked by the magazine stand, I noticed the headlines on the paper—FERGUSON DISCOVERS BIGGEST SWINDLE OF ALL TIMES. Reading further, I saw that James H. Ferguson, Public Account- ant, in close cooperation with Robert Curlee of the F.B.I. had at last broken the case which had baffled police for many weeks. Looking further through the paper, a Buick ad caught my eye. It advertised Huntley Buick Co., which was operated by Charles Huntley. I left the drug s tore and started down the street towards the newspaper office. As I passed a large self-service grocery I saw a familiar face behind a huge bundle of groceries. It was Bar- bara Odom who had been the Business Manager of the 1947 Hi-Ways. She was now married and lived in a modern home near the edge of town. As we stood there talking, Lois Talent also came out of the store. She had married a very suc- cessful business man soon after she graduated from school. The store, by the way, was owned and operated by Niley Hill’s husband. Barbara and Lois started gossiping about some of the local happenings so I decided to continue on my way. I could not help but no- tice the posters at the entrance of the theater. “Brief Encounter” starring dashing James Weims Clark and the lovely Ann Lou Shaver. I found out later that the theater was managed by Don- ald Stiles. (Continued on Page 42) Page Twenty-One of (945 President .. ii ERR VeRUDCICER Vice President........... The officers of the class were Jeanette Long, president; Gwendolyn Smith, vice-president; Shannon Davidson, secretary; and Jimmy Fer- guson, treasurer. Neale Kelly held the import- ant office of President of the Student Council and Agnes Crawford served as secretary. The high school publications were also under the direction of Seniors. Billie Jean Greene was edi- tor of the 1947 Hi-Ways. Barbara Odom held the position of Business Manage r. The editor of the “Student Prints” was Betty Ann Wall. H. M. Maples was assistant editor and Lois Jean Ash- craft was business manager. Miss Hermine Caraway directed the work of the publication staffs. The prime sports interest was football. Nine of the Senior boys participated and played a big part in making this the most notable football season in the history of Wadesboro High School. For this was the year that the Tigers, coached by J. Ray Shelton, won the Eastern Conference Championship. For eleven years these boys and girls had strived to reach a goal. Was this it? To be Sen- iors and graduate from high school? If so, the goal has been reached, for the twelfth year is nearly completed and soon they will leave this school where they worked and studied together. But their history does not end here. This is only a phase of their life. The rest is yet to be written. Class Prophecy (Continued from Page 21) At the sound of a deep, gruff voice, I turned around to face a huge, muscle-bound man. “Hey, buddy. Want to buy a ‘Johnnie Russell’ course? Just look at me! I used to be one of those 97 pounders.” Who would ever have thought this was the Johnnie Russell we used to know? I left Johnnie and walked into the office of the M I. Frances Burns, the Secretary in the outer office, informed me that “Bet” Wall, the editor, and John Smith, the assistant editor, were having a conference. However she called them over the inner office phone and they said it would be all right for me to come in. “Bet” and John had changed very little in the last few years. They had enlarged the M I until it was now one of the most widely read newspapers in the South. They were discussing the lengthening of the column by Lula Overton, the Emily Post of the day. Lu was now the foremost authority on manners and etiquette. In answer to my questions about our school mates, ‘‘Bet” replied that the latest sensation was the marriage of Weesie Anderson, a night club singer, to a surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She also told me that Lois Jean, Edna Moore, and Louise Covington were nurses at the local hospital. ‘““Ag’” Crawford was the Home Ec. teacher at the high school. Ann Lindsey taught math, and Albert Polston was the coach. ‘“‘Shine”’ Huntley was now manager of the Wadesboro Tigers, a professional football team, which was owned by Truette Burris, who also owned the local textile mill. Leaving “Bet” and John, I took the bus, which was driven by Jesse Luther, and went to the Maples Chemical Research Foundation which was headed by H. M. Maples. On the way out we passed the radio station and the air- port, which I decided I would later visit. I left the bus and walked into the impressive building of the Research Foundation. There I was met by Betty Jarman, the secretary, who called H. M. He insisted on showing me his plant. As we were viewing the plant, a call for H. M. came over the speaker system. We return- ed to his office where we were greeted by Billie Jean Greene, lab technician, who had just made an important discovery. H. M. was going to be busy so I decided to visit the radio station which was nearby. I arrived just in time to hear Shannon David- son, the Grady Cole of Station W. A; D E; broadcast the news. I listened to the news cast I noticed the names of Fred Edwards and Bobby Burroughs. Fred had just been appoint- ed Secretary of Agriculture, and Bobbie Bur- roughs, the head of the Atomic Commission, had just returned from a conference in Paris. After a short commercial on the Gaddy Danc- ing School, which was operated by Betty Ruth Gaddy, Shannon went off the air and came out to talk to me. Remembering my love of aviation, Shannon took me in his car to visit the local air field. G. E. Knowles was now running the airport, and Dervis Thomas and Carol Milks were flight in- structors. I decided to take a short hop in one of the modern planes with G. E. The sky was overcast so we climbed through a break in the clouds. Af- ter playing around awhile, we decided to come back down. The clouds had now closed in so we were forced to dive through them. As we dived down, we were surrounded by fleecy white clouds. And then it seemed as if I were no longer in the plane. I was just floating on a cloud. Other clouds, blown by gentle breeze, passed me. . As I started to turn my head to view the scene, something hard struck me. Then suddenly I realized what it was. I was sitting in a chair with my head upon a desk and had just struck a small metal calendar on the desk. The date on the calendar was January 6, 1947. I sat for awhile wondering if this was our fu- ture. Maybe it is. Who Knows?? Page Forty-Two THE cule SJAQAYN, INC. 1930 CAMDEN ROAD CHARLOTTE, N. C. | Anson Food Processing Company LATHAM OIL CO.
