CLASS HISTORY CORNELIA WINFREE Class Historian Gs. LONG JOURNEY of the class of 1944 has been completed —another is just beginning. It was a bright, sunny September |) morning in 1932 that a group of rather es shy youngsters began an important |. “ journey—a twelve mile journey on the “™e) “Hi-Way of Knowledge.” Mrs. Liles — sand Miss Plunkett started this group on | the right road and helped them over ° ee their first mile. Mrs. Baughan and || Miss Webb carried them safely over the ae second mile. Mrs. Gray, Miss Crowder, U 5 and Miss Cameron pointed out the “signs” on the third mile. The fourth mile was traveled under the leadersh‘p os of Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Fogleman. The completion of the fourth mile meant a transfer from the grammar building to the high-school building. Miss Pinkston and Mrs. Allen saw that the journey was resumed and the im- portant “signs” indicated. Mr. Lewis became their chief guide on th’s mile. Every year the road seemed to broaden and the journey became rougher, but this didn’t stop the group, and the sixth mile was made smoother by the careful guidance of Miss Boggan and Mrs. Bennett. The seventh mile brought something new and different. The members of the group were given the privilege of changing classes which gave them that “grown up” feeling. Mrs. Gulledge, Miss Cunningham, Miss Stansell, and Miss Thompson were their guides over this mile. The “signs” along the eighth mile indicated that another change would be made. The school band was started during this year and many members of the group joined it and made much progress under the leadership of the band direc- tor, Mr. Cartier. They also received the'r “passports” to the Big Hi-way, high school, on the day of their gradu- ation from junior high. Sell, Mrs. Gulledge, Miss Cunningham, and Miss Spence. A very eager and yet rather green group entered the Big Hi-way. Their n’nth mile was not to be an easy one, for many new subjects were introduced to them. Under the capable leadership of Miss Johnson, Mr. Wildermuth, Miss Kirby, Mr. Bennett, Miss Spence, Miss Plonk, Miss Hinson, and Mr. Hicks they conquered the rough spots. The tenth mile was darkened by war clouds, but this made the group more eager to com- plete their journey. Miss Kirby, Miss Fink, Mr. Cooley, Mr. Wildermuth, M'ss Craig, Miss Johnson, Miss Tread- well, Mr. Howell, Miss Allen, Mr. Ben- nett, and Mr. Snuggs saw to it that they kept on the right road. This was Mr. Snuggs’ last year as a guide on this journey for he resigned at the end of this mile. The eleventh mile brought them to their junior year which was important. Many of the boys making this import- ant journey had to make a slight de- tour, for Uncle Sam needed them to do a more important job for him. A Vic- tory Corps was organized for the jun- iors and seniors. Mrs. Wall, Miss Cun- ningham, Mrs. Wildermuth, and Mr. Lewis taught the girls first-aid and dietetics, while Mr. Cashion gave the Page Eleven = boys a sample of what military drill was like in the Army. Coach Shelton, along with Misses Kirby and Fink, had the job of seeing that every member was physically fit. A very important event took place this year—the junior- senior banquet. Much time and effort were used in preparing for this suc- cessful affair. Other leaders on this mile were Mrs. Merr:tt, who remained with them but a short time, Mr. War- lick, her successor, Miss Holder, Miss Johnson, Miss Kirby, Miss Fink, and Miss Allen. The last mile was far from being easy. Many changes had been made in the faculty of the previous mile. Mr. Terrell succeeded Mr. Wildermuth as principal, and Miss Sturgis, also a new- comer, was the senior sponsor. It was under her careful guidance that the seniors completed the last mile. The Victory Corps was continued under the leadership of Mrs. Wall, Mr. Shelton, and Mr. Cashion. Other leaders in the final lap were Miss Banta, Miss Cara- — way, Mr. Terrell, Miss Mintz, Miss Temple, and Mr. Paling. Though this group is facing eradua- tion, they will look back over this great journey and forever cherish the mem- ories they carry with them from it.
