Keeping the Post Alivev The year 1980 brings a new begin- ning-a year full of hope and antici- pation of the coming years. What does the future hold for us? Will in- ternational crises be resolved? Will domestic tensions be eased? Will the 80's be the dawn of the solar age? Will man finally learn to work alongs side his brother and in har- mony with his environment in order to survive? Endless questions are thrown at youth today. The 1980 graduates of Waco High may hold the answers. We are entering the adult world at a crucial time, The century is nearing its twilight just as we are reaching our new level of responsibility and participation in society. Our genera- tion, as the leaders of tomorrow, must use yesterday as a guide to an improved future. By studying the past, we can avoid the pitfalls of our forefathers. More importantly, we can use the successes and triumphs of past decades as the foundations from which our new age of peace and security will come. Because of this responsibility, be- cause our future is up to us, the theme for the 1980 Daisy Chain is Keeping the Past Alive . 4 C , 0 ll.. -s . w X 1,1 A n iifrihgue-ilivralh to End Rumor of WHS Ras.-r ugmmuuvs kemrr at an-uw mag 1 Umm Na N rvmmfmnltann ss Luv hucfrfsmasyt wwsswws sihrnuis'nea4'Sagoccas Rlghqmnean-mMN.kmrex Quuscsmmerwmzumu. Traditional Winning Spirit Unbrolfen Here at Waco High, we are indeed Keeping the Past Alive'. By striving for the highest goals, we are pre- . serving the winning tradition of WHS throughout the year. In all areas, WHS has its superstars. Whether in the sports arena, the ac- ademic classroom, or the fine arts, WHS students have proved them- selves winnersvevery year. .. Even though attitudes and ideas have changed since the founding of Waco High, the winning spirit of the school of Waco has endured. We may dress, think, and act differently in 1980 than we did in 1910, and our school building may have changed on the outside, but inside our hearts, the Tigers will forever be keeping the past alive. Cheerleaders lenda Winningham and Phoebe Franco get ready to start the spirit train to Paul Tyson Field. l Break time in the library-it's the surest place to catch up on school happenings. To welcome all Waco High exes, many activities are planned. In order to get everyone into the celebrating mood, the student council set up elaborate decorations pertaining to the theme. The Wednesday preceding the Homecoming game, everyone was fired up for one of the biggest bonfires of the 70's. Anxious anticipation filled the hearts of the eight Homecoming queen nominees right up to the magic moment when Dorian Mims was crowned queen for 1979-80. The fighting Tiger team was victorious over the jefferson-Moore Lions by a score of 13-7, making the last Homecoming of the decade one to remember. 79 Hoinvrzoming noniinsrus and oscorts. Many hours were spent after school working on final lay-outs since many staff members wasted time in class. Even though much precious time was overlooked, the Daisy Chain still held on to its terrific contents. Advisor Margie Mashek, grew her first gray hairs during the last months of school because of the hectic schedules and overdue head- lines. As time passed on, more and more pages were finished and the panic slightly diminished. When the end of the year rolled around, Keeping the Past Alive really stood for this year's theme. Publishing the Daisy Chain is one of the strongest traditions of WHS. Even the overdue deadlines, gray hairs, and nervousness are part of keeping this past tradition alive, but the final result is a picture-filled vol- ume of glorious moments at Waco High. 3 tl Valentines Day. The journalism staff, led by Margie Mashek, put out six papers during the 1979-80 school year. Staff members Melanie Burnette, Ieff Spelman and Laura Farley placed high in UIL competition and the Wocoon ranked as the fifth best pa- per in the state. The Wocoon specialized in con- troversial editorials along with fea- tures on special people at Waco High and informative news stories. This combination of news writing and full sports coverage earned statewide recognition for the Wo- coon as the leading school publica- tion in WISD. The Wocoon is a true leader in many ways. It is the only paper in WISD that goes to the printer cam- era-ready. This means that the staff must not only write stories, but type them, do all the paste-up and layout work and prepare all photographs and artwork. The Wocoon staff had to be the best-and they were. Many students spent hours after school working on layout design, headlines and simple proofreading to make sure that deadlines were met. The Tiger Band, under the direc- tion of Dick Perot, rehearsed dili- gently during the summer and be- fore school to prepare for football season. They gave many excellent performances and helped to in- crease the spirit of Waco I-ligh. ln addition to halftime performances, the Tiger Band marched in two pa- rades and performed in the Cotton Bowl at the State Fair in Dallas. In October, the band sponsored a chili supper and auction. KRZI's Mi- chael Iames was auctioneer. In March, several members of the Tiger Band participated in tryouts for District, Region, and Area Bands. Members also tried out for U.l.L. solo and ensemble contest. Medals were awarded to the first divison winners and these musicians ad- vanced to state competion. The WHS stage band, under the di- rection of Mr. Dick Perot, added a new sound to the group with bell front French horns. Mr. Perot said the horns were added to give the trombone section a more secure sound. These instruments along with the saxophone, trumpet, and rhythm sections gave the stage band a very strong playing year. The stage band performed at the Chili Supper at the first of the school year and also played at many junior high and outdoor concerts. I xx. 11 ,13 6, 5 X , X L J .ef almighty alert adaptable and a strong character of Waco High's past. May Tiger roars be heard forever! 169 We ve Kept It Living Waco High School started out a fan- tastic year with its scholastic achievements. The year began with a class of educated seniors-proud and hard working students, along with their underclassmen. Discipline was strengthened throughout the year of '80 while tra- dition was also a major priority. In the Daisy Chain's theme Keeping the Past Alive we, the yearbook staff, strived to do just that. This year was known as the Dawn of a New Decade for its first gradu- ating class of the 80's. With our goals in the right direction, Waco High stood tall in many efforts. We grew with our name and with our town. Community growth also developed in 1980 as Waco emerged with a great shopping center. The long drives to Dallas and Temple ceased when Richland Fashion Mall opened and gave Waco a bigger and better name just as Waco High en- riched its city's history back in the early 1900's. We back Waco all the way and with this, we plan to en- dure our stand in the community by 'Keeping the Past Alive. 1 70 FWF: 171 2 Q E 51 Z 2w5w1Qwh:tr222wu'JNusF ..
