Moving Up, Moving On The year began moving up with the hiring of a new principal, Willie Williams. His attitude of Tiger Pride inspired the students and faculty to strive for the improvement of academics and school spirit. Self-discipline was stressed and Waco High began its journey back to being THE BEST in the city. ... and then came a time for moving on when Wayne Gardner resigned from his head coach- ing position. Gardner had been a devoted Tiger leader for 17 years, Even though this loss made many hearts sink, it didn't keep WHS from moving up. In january, all eyes were focused on Waco High when Gardner's successor was announced. Centex Coach of the Year, Derrell Carlile, joined the Tiger family and dedicated him- con't p. 8. Tiger tracks were on an upward move once again. But moving on seemed to happen quickly. Darrell Carlile resigned a month later for personal reasons. Waco High received an- other coach from Houston's Klein High School. Mark Saunders was hired to lead the Tigers in a victorous season for the 1979- 80 year. In 1979, goals were made and goals were reached. Togetherness was felt with the stu- dents and teachers working together. Sure- there were times of conflict and pressure but Waco High kept going. As the sophomores and juniors found them- selves moving up into a better spirit and a higher class, the seniors moved on into a dif- ferent world.
