Moving Up, Moving On The year began moving up with the hiring of a new principal, Willie Williams. His attitude of Tiger Pride inspired the students and faculty to strive for the improvement of academics and school spirit. Self-discipline was stressed and Waco High began its journey back to being THE BEST in the city. ... and then came a time for moving on when Wayne Gardner resigned from his head coach- ing position. Gardner had been a devoted Tiger leader for 17 years, Even though this loss made many hearts sink, it didn't keep WHS from moving up. In january, all eyes were focused on Waco High when Gardner's successor was announced. Centex Coach of the Year, Derrell Carlile, joined the Tiger family and dedicated him- con't p. 8. Tiger tracks were on an upward move once again. But moving on seemed to happen quickly. Darrell Carlile resigned a month later for personal reasons. Waco High received an- other coach from Houston's Klein High School. Mark Saunders was hired to lead the Tigers in a victorous season for the 1979- 80 year. In 1979, goals were made and goals were reached. Togetherness was felt with the stu- dents and teachers working together. Sure- there were times of conflict and pressure but Waco High kept going. The 1978-79 Tiger Cheerleaders showed their great pride and spirit to all the Tigers by conducting pep ral- lies, making posters and most of all by showing great enthusiasm in everything they did. The cheerleaders spent many hours practicing to perfect their yells and movements. With all the hard Work of being a cheer- leader, it made them closer friends. Even when the spirit of the crowd was down, the cheerleaders kept their spirit up and kept everything moving along. They busily prepared for the tryouts by teaching their skills to the 79-80 candidates and working on their good- bye yell which expressed their appreciation to the fac- ulty and students of Waco High. Morning practices often began be- fore sun u , and evening practices some- times lasteg until sun down. The coaches put in as much time in preparation for prac- tices as the players spent going through it. The Tigers acquired a new defensive back- field coach at the beginnin of the season. Iames Shaw came to WHS from Athens, Texas, where he had coached for two years. The Tigers went 3-7 on the year with wins over University, Ennis, and Iefferson-Moore. They played Midway for Homecoming and suffered a disappointing 37-20 loss. They had their first and only district win of the season against Iefferson-Moore beating the Lions 21-0. The Tigers suffered disappoint- ing losses to Marlin and Connally, the nurn- ber one and two teams in District 11 AAA. In the Connally game, the Tigers drove to Connally's one yard line two times in the first half only to be stopped each time. Con- nally came back and scored twice in the sec- ond half to win 14-0. In the Marlin game, the Tigers drove deep into Marlin territor but could not put the ball across the goal, line until the final minutes of the game. The fi- nal score was 17-6. This was a particularly heartbreaking loss because it not only was the last game of the season, but also the last game for a long-time Tiger head coach ayne Gardner. Gardner announced his resi nation immediately prior to the game. He quad been head coach at WHS for 17 years. The Tigers received recognition when sev- eral WHS players were named to the All- District team. They were, first team offenseg Chris Prewitt-center, first team defense: Larry Bolton-lineman, Steve Haliburton- end, Tom Miller-Linebacker. Second team offense: Mike Boney-end, Marc Havis- guard, Steve Haliburton-back. Second team defense Willie Summers-back. 43 3 'tt -tt H e eiei t 1'- ' - - X? But its much more than that. There are the coaches who prepare the team for competition. Coaches Wayne Gardner, Richard Friedli, Ken Fergu- son, Iames Shaw, Mike McGilvray and Randy Leasley devoted many hours de- signing the different plays the team practiced. They worked toward per- fection of skills. The managers were Richard Goates, Bulldog Mor an, Danny Mills, and Clarence Wagcer. They prepared the equipment before the game, performed first aid, and worked on the things that the pla ers themselves would of had to do if tfie managers were not there to help them. Practices played a major role of a foot- ball game. Practice makes perfect and the Tiger team practiced very hard. They had practice every school day af- ter class, sometimes even into night. Finally, there are the spectators. They make the sportg Without them there would be no one to cheer the team. All these things consisted the Waco High Tiger football team. Items purchased included a new Porta-Pit, gold and white uni- forms, new shoes, hurdles, extra shot puts and discuses. Spring showers hampered the be- ginning of track season. The Waco Relays, the first meet on the year's schedule, was cancelled because of rain. The Tigers did, however, at- tend the Copperas Cove meet and scored 19 points. Tim Zgabay placed second throwing the discus, followed by Melvin Petty in third and Ira Brandon in fifth. jeff Duf- fey came in third in the 330 inter- mediate hurdles. The Tigers competed in the Temple track meet along with 72 other teams. According to Coach Richard Friedli, this was a tough meet and the Tigers were unable to score because of the great number of competitors. On March 31, the Tigers attended the meet in Gatesville. The junior varsity scored 32 points and the var- sity scored 6 with the meet being cancelled after field events due to rain. The next meet of the season was the zone meet on April 6 at Midway. Luddy Duffey represented the IV in the long jump and earned a third place finish with a jump of 19'1',. Ken Alexander placed third in the high jump at 6'0 . David Orsak placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 136'11 and in doing so, set a new AAA school record. By the time the school doors had opened for the 1978-79 year, 55 WHS Faculty members had already began working to make the school year a success. This same willingness showed itself again and again throughout the year. They not only applied themselves to teaching but also to extracurricular activities as well. Whenever a student needed assistance, there was always a faculty member there to help. Faculty members were always to be found at all extracurricular activities. On T-shirt days, there was not a faculty mem- ber to be found that had not donned the bright yellow t-shirts with a tiger on the front. Many of the faculty became more than just teachers and administrators to the students- they had become friends. It was their willing- ness to get involved and their willingness to show school spirit, even to the point of per- sonal sacrifice. Neilla Longino: I know this map is flat but the world isn't. X S ,,.,,i,: 1 ' - r , g -so-7o-an'9o- . on electric i ' ' X - .,A,. .. cur conditioning eriirr Air conditioning provides lots of comfort during the summer months, but for many thousands of homeowners it is also the biggest factor in the cost of electricity. On the average, air conditioning accounts for about half of summertime electric bills. Here are ways you can hold down the cost of air conditioning and still enjoy its comfort. Central Systems 1. Set thermostat on 780, or higher, during the summer. Turn unit off if you'll be away from home several days. 2. Keep equipment at top operating efficiency. Have it checked seasonally by qualified serviceman. 3. Check filter every 30 days. Dirty filters cause equipment to use excessive electricity. lf filter is permanent, clean by manufacturers directions, if its disposable, it should be replaced when dirty. 4. Keep furniture, draperies away from air outlets and returns. Clean grills often. 5. Close draperies and blinds to keep out direct sunlight. 6. Keep fireplace damper closed. 7. Proper home insulation keeps the heat out, cuts energy use. Insulation questions Call TP8tL. 8. Shade on roof and walls can reduce energy needed to cool. But trim trees, shrubs away from outside compressor unit. Keep it free of leaves, debris. If air flow is blocked, unit uses more energy. '? 9. Weatherstrip doors and windows, caulk cracks to prevent drafts and cool air loss. 10. Keep windows closed. Open outside doors as little as possible. Window Units Follow above suggestions, plus these: 11. Buy units with highest Henergy efficiency ratio QEER1. Uses less electricity to cool. lf EER is not on sales tag, ask for it or figure it yourself. Divide wattage into BTU capacity. Both figures are on unit. 12. Place unit where it'll get as little direct sun as possible. 13. Aim air outlets at lower half of doorway to next room to allow warm air from that room to enter at the doortop for recooling. recirculation. 14. Never vent air conditioner into garage. Ventilation is usually too poor for top performance of your unit. Conserve electricity and you help conserve one or more of the fuels needed to produce it. Conserve fuels and you help assure that there will be enough to meet essential needs for electricity in the future. When you pass a TP8tl. office, warehouse, generating plant or other facility, you'lI see that we've turned off all non-essential lighting. And, in as many other ways as possible, TP8tL is reducing its own uses of electricity. lfyou would like additional information on consenfing electricity, call the Customer Service Representative in the TP8rL Office. Each year of the '70's seemed to he a stepping stone to higher ground. The year of 1979 was the giant step for re- newing goals and school loyalty for the decade to come. Yes, Waco High started its move up this year and we, the Daisy Chain staff, were given the chance and the chal- lenge to capture it with our photo- graphs and words. Now it's time for moving on . . . We hope that you will treasure this yearbook and its memories for years to come. Sincerely, ll,plJL,v.J lQOdcL The Daisy Chain Gang J , 1 . . Wt N.t..,.a,w.., . , M ,.....: in Q 'a 4?f!
