The Tiger offense rallied behind the line to please their fans with a homecoming victory over Copperas Cove. b. Reggie Williams stonns the Cleburne offensive line. After the disappointing loss to Hearne the Tigers were up for the homecoming game against the Cop- peras Cove Bulldogs. The offense controlled the ball and the defense played its best game of the year as YVHS shutout the Dogs by a 10-0 score. WVaco High totally dominated the game. This was the only Tiger victory of the year, fortunately it was homecoming. A The Tiger's first district game evolved into another defensive battle as the Yellowjackets of Cleburne squeezed past the Tigers, 14-7. YVaeo High outgained Cleburne, but turn- overs and several key penalties pre- vented WHS from scoring. This was the Tiger's second good outing in a row as they almost pulled an upset. f 'V .ni H gig n - WHS Go Both Ways K L... E Keith Napier Benny Booker Steve Gardner FBfLBfKl1 Sr- CXDT jr. DT jr. TEXDE Sr. Corsi Kills Barely Rammed The spirit that had evolved from the teamis two previous games was quickly snuffed against Corsicana as the scoring got a little out of hand. The 49-7 loss to Corsicana was the worst defeat of the season. The score was 22-7 at the half and the touch- down scored by WHS came on a blocked punt which was returned all the way. WHS played well in the game against Richfield but the offense could not muster enough points. The annual rivalry was hard fought and the first half ended in a surprising 0-0 deadlock. Richfield came out fired up in the second half and scored two A fumble by the Rams gave the Tigers their only points in the 14-6 loss. 'D Q A a. Even with Don Howard and Reggie Wil- liams blocking, Keith Napier was caught be- hind the line in the Corsicana game. b. Ronnie Ortiz runs for a few more yards be- hind Rick Becldiam and Keith Napier in the loss to Richfield. B 87 Temple Shutout lmost Bryan Jerry Hooper takes the ball from quarter- back Don Howard and charges the line with Benny Booker, Tony Morales and Terry Hold- brook blocking. Keith Napier unsuccess- hllly tries a field goal from the hold of Don Howard in the Bryan game. Temple, who eventually won the district title, shutout the Tigers, 17-0. The 17 point margin did not reflect the fact that Waco High was still in the game until the final touchdown. VVaco High moved the ball well enough to put points on the board, but Templeis fine defense stiffened when the Tigers penetrated the Wildcats' 20. A This was Waco High's best offen- sive game of the year as they almost upset Bryan. The 24-21 final was sur- prising because at this point Bryan was undefeated. Turnovers by Bryan gave WHS field position and the Ti- gers took advantage of it. Bryan won but the Tigers had given them a run for their money and Tony Morales had broken the hearts of the Bryan fans and the arm of their quarterback. E5 3 Tiger Coaches 9- 3 -..... J. Curtis Walton and Keith Napier lead ahead while Rick Beckham is caught on the line against the University Trojans in a heart lwreaking defeat. l5-14. Once again Wfaco High played a fine game, but a second half letdown allowed Killeen to prove victorious in their homecoming game with a 20-6 win. The game was tied 6-6 at the half. A Tiger turnover and a Kill- een goal line stand prevented VVHS from scoring again. The finial score came early in the cold and windy fourth quarter. A This game was the biggest upset of the year for the Tigers. A startling comeback in the second half put the Tigers ahead 14-7 over University. The Trojans were not ready to go home. They reeled off a long drive and with little time remaining scored a touchdown making it 14-13 WHS. The all too crucial two point con- version was good. 90 B s Show Promise The Tigers B-Team football com- pleted another year of competition. Their final record was 3-6. The team really showed improvement as the year progressed. Opening with sev- eral big losses, the teamls ability im- proved weekly as the team won their three games in the latter part of the season. A winning combination of quickness and agility gave the Tigers the abil- ity to compete with the better teams in the district. Strong reserves aided the WHS starters Willie Dever, Carl- ton Cashaw, Charlie Olson, Law- rence jacobs and David Daniels in helping the team gain a reputation in the district. The 15-13 record could have been much better had the ball bounced in Waco High's direc- tion in some of the many close games. Few teams were able to to- tally run away with a game over VVHS. a. The team was in the run- ning and battled Richfield for second place in district after eight games. WHS was 5-3 at this point and were tied with Richfield, but Corsicana had a perfect slate at 8-0. As proof of Waco High's strength, in their first game against the Tigers from Corsi- cana, WHS was only behind by four points in the first half. In the second half the team slumped and lost by a g ide margin. This second half slump typified the teamis season, because in the latter part of their schedule WHS lost 5 of 6 but still finished with a re- spectable 6-8 district record.
