That was the one word to describe the school board's year. During the summer months meeting after meeting was held in or- der to solve problems that originated when the WISD complied with a court ruling to achieve racial balance in the schools. The board worked overtime so that they might operate with a suit- able plan before school opened for the 1971-72 school year. All summer long Wacoans awaited results as plan after plan was suggested and thrown out. The situation was more complex when La Vega students were included in the VVISD. For the school board, this had been one of their more t ing terms. The opening of school was slighgf elayed as bus routes and new district lines had to be readied for a new year. VVhen the doors were opened, it was not only the beginning of school, but the beginning of a new plan that would need the cooperation of the entire city. This became a fairly difficult task. Even as boxes were packed and files were stored classes went on as usual. All during the year discipline was administered while looking over boxes and cartons. Even after school closed for the summer, work went steadily on for the administrators. All of the work paid off, though, when the new building opened its doors for the first time to a fairly smooth first day. The list opposite this page is an entire list of the faculty members. All teachers not pictured on pages 22-23 are presented in a special depart- mental section in the closing section of the book. L 3,3 ' 1 '+h-nw-f -QS-T X wifi? 5... The field house, Death Valley, the hardwood gym floor, a rickety old truck-all were a part of the Tiger sports tradition. Time would not stand still and WHS broke into a new life as an ultramodern facility was built on North 19th. With it came a building containing both gym-and field house. The fm was modern and paved with a newl f devefdped tarten surface. A practice field with surrounding track gave the football and track teams a permanent home. Baseball, although still located at the Northern ball park, also made use of the field house complex. A dia- mond and several tennis courts are to be con- structed in the valley below the school. The Ti- ger golf team will remain at the Lake Waco course. It is hoped that the new facilities will spark life into WHS sports. Somehow the new surroundings could not bring a winning season to either the basketball or football teams. The Ti er football squad went winless as they tried cfesperately to over- come a lack of depth. Basketball saw close games that left the Cagers with an unimpres- sive record but with a strong team for 72.', With the start of the baseball season, however, there was a different atmosphere. The Tiger team was highly rated and made good showings on Cen-Tex diamonds. Having several players in Hractically every position, the Tigers were we prepared to meet opposition. Minor sports also played important roles in WHS sports. Golf and swimming were in- cluded in these as students participated in re- gional competion. 78 KN? This feeling was especially true this year when the school was new to everyone and juniors felt as lost as they did last year. They entered WHS excited at the prospect of a new building and wondering if things would be completely different. As the year progressed, the juniors grew in their outlooks. The building was new, the classrooms were different, and there were some new faces in the halls, but spirit in the class of ,73 was still strong. RIGHT: Laura Vinson, Get that thing away from me. It is this class that will set the example for all future generations of WHS students. Transition. How was it accomplished? Did we blend the old and the new? We liked the courtyard as a place to relax. We used new facilities for language stud . We enjoyed the provocative swinging stage band. We had pride in the record of our Challenge Team. We trained students to manipulate the audio visual tapes in the Control room. We exhibited new bumper plates. We kept a smile on our dark room door. Transition. WHS in a new locale, being as innovative as we dared, as traditional as we wished. Our mascot, Regit, led the Tiger Trot to get us here. His tracks have covered an- other 180-day calendar year. T ransition, the continuance of excellence, the pursuit of knowledge. The tracks of yesterday are the molds for the prints of tomorrow. 1 i- gs, f .,., 4 .U sf' A Y 's '41 ... busy faculty members lend to WH transition Mrs. Creech and Mrs. Dodgen had a good year of calisthentics, sports, jogging and just plain fun. The new building gave them the advan- tage of the upstairs part of the gym where they could take their classes when the main gym was set up for an assembly. Mrs. Hunter kept all the typewriters humming next door to the book- keeping room where Miss Weeks taught stu- dents to work with numbers in long, long col- umns. Study hall was kept running smoothly by Mrs. Wise. Miss Talle was around to help find solutions to the problems which beset high school students-schedules, future college plans and the headache of college boards. TOP LEFT: Mrs. Dodgen surveys the sight before she smashes a volleyball. TOP RIGHT: Much of the paper work for the school is done by Miss Talley. BOTTOM LEFT: Mrs. Wise looks over her study hall list. BOTTOM BHDDLE: Mrs. Hunter helps Kristi Carlile with her typ- ing. ABOVE: Miss Weeks studies her own bookkeeping. 185 teachers move along with open classrooms Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Henry taught special edu- cation. Students passing their rooms saw inter- esting things going on. In the kitchens and sew- ing rooms of the Homemaking Department, Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Nolte helped future homemakers learn to cook, sew and perform all the duties necessary for an efficiently-run household. They also taught them how to be good hostesses at a tea and the proper way to serve a meal. Mrs. Bruner joined the faculty at mid-term to teach German and English. y2rQ5l!NlG ITXZYE we I 86 TOP LEFT: Mrs. Henry ponders over some papers for the course.TOP RIGHT: Mrs. Bruner finds out that even in this new system papers have to be graded. BELOW: Mrs. Smith and Mr. Adams help with sewing. 'I87 Head football coach Mr. Gardner never lost his drive during a season of tough play, and it was admirable to watch. Mr. Ferguson coached the track team. With his help, the team put in a good showing in the track meets. Mr. Smith also coached the track team. Mr. Williams, the basketball coach, had some good material to work with, and he worked them until they were a high-scoring team. Mr. Williams also doubled as a drivers' ed. teacher. He was joined by Mr. Clark, a former WHS teacher, who gave c assroom instruction. Mr. Roland taught stu- dents basic driving skills in the simulator. RIGHT: Mr. Clark gives WHS an air of dignity. MIDDLE RIGHT: Mr. Ferguson finds something very pleasing in his health book. FAR RIGHT: Mr. Williams looks at one of his drivers, ed. students doubtfully.
