Because we are Tigers, the best is expected ot us, We must have self-discipline and perform with hearts as big as our bodies. Then and only then shall we deserve to be called Tigers. Tiger Players Depth proved to be the down-fall of the Tiger team this season as they fell several times in the final quarter. lf there had been some replacements on the bench to give the starters a rest, the final record may have been quite dif- ferent. Man for man the Tigers had a team as good as any other in the district. The Tiger line was bolstered by seniors Wendell Mosley, Travis Comer, Larry Weaver, Danny Willis and David Bat- tles. lvlosley, Comer and Weaver were tackles that had good size, and Willis and Battles were mini-guards that ex- celled in quickness. The new schools will depend on WHS underclassmen. They are Sam Mangum, Rhondal Napier, Gary Scott, Billy Jackson, Norman Dunham and Bruce Reed. Napier was the sophomore that invaded the trenches for the Tigers. With the Tiger offense being mostly a running offense, the l 44 ends spent most of their time blocking down field. The quickness of ends Steve Garner, Alvin Cooper, Ricky Collins, Rick Smith, Donald Scott and Larry Johnson proved invalu- able in the defensive backfield. Senior backs Johnny Dodd and Russell Ross carried most of the load. The ball handling of Jay Lee and the slashing runs of Charles Alexander aided in the Tiger attack. Little Ken Tyler played with heart both on offense and on defense. Sophomores Gary Bowers, Dennis Whiteside, and iunior Greg Larkins gave much needed depth to the backfield. The punting was handled by Johnny Dodd until Robbie relieved him of the worry after the season was several weeks deep. Larry Weaver proved to be one of the best high school kickers in this area. Coach Richard Bulldog Smith's iunior varsity team gave a good account of themselves during the 1970-1971 season. Although the iunior varsity team finished vvith an apparently unimpressive 4-10 district record, the season was invaluable in gaining the necessary experience to compete with other schools that they will tace during their careers on the varsity squad. Gary Bowers, Cleve Manor and Clint Tabor made up the post position for the junior varsity, Rick Smith, Dennis Whi- teside and Greg Angelo headed up the crevv of good out- side shooters on the team. Many times the iunior varsity led the opposing team, but the mistakes of inexperience set them back temporarily. Five commis- sioners preside. Two are elected in the tall tor the spring semester and three in the spring for the tall semester so that at least two experienced commissioners remain in ottice. The five commissioners elect a mayor who serves for one semester. A city secretary and a city manager are ap- pointed trom the student body. The Student Government sponsors such activities as the Homecoming Queen election and assembly, the election ot Corrigan King, commissioners, and cheerleaders. Its sole source of income is a poll tax paid by students wishing to vote in the various elections. Their most outstanding ac- complishment this year was a successful campaign and ap- peal to retain the name of Waco High School tor the new school building on North l9th Street. The Waco lndepen- dent School Board voted unanimously to keep Waco High School's name. Among the proiects throughout the T971 school year was the decorating of the Christmas tree in the front hall. They presented a skit to introduce the tall commissioner can- didates which was a take-oft on Gunsmoke, Commis- sioners dressed as cow-pokes and saloon maidens with Coach Shrader as a bar-tender. Their chiet aim ot the T970- l97l school year was to provide a smooth transition from the building at 8l5 Columbus Avenue to the new building on North l9th Street. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS As editor of the l97I Daisy Chain staff I wish to take this opportunity to express appreciation to the following people for their help in producing the last Daisy Chain yearbook in the Waco I-Iigh School Building. Interest was high and team spirit within the staff was great. To those staff members who gave time after school and on weekends, I am especially grateful. Appreciation is expressed to the following groups: To all photographers-Joey Derting, Kenneth Hill, Ken Norsworthy, Eddie Payton and Glen Raines. To the custodians-for clearing the debris and not dis- turbing our important papers. To Mr. Weldon Walker-our Paragon representative for his high ideals and insistence on accuracy in our work. To all faculty members-for excusing staff members and students from classes. To Mr. W, E. Weathers, our principal-for graciously ar- ranging and re-arranging schedules so that necessary group pictures could be made.
