There may be a certain sameness in the yearbooks on the shelf, But there'll never be a better place to meet and greet one's self, Though our fortune's in the future, take the time to mark this well: There's a treasure in the trites and trues of Senior Show and Tell. Oh! our song was Oklahoma! in its glory on the plain, And our dreams were not impossible when dreamed with might and main, is ffii -s sit f , , H i i V T E ' ln the rows of Senior Picnics, who can tell which one was which? WERNER Pop,' Werner instructs Willie Brown and Ruben Hernandez on the steel lathe. Pop works with students in doing layout work in planning their projects. Left to right: Willie Brown, Reginald Grayson, Ruben Hernandez, t'Pop , Jay Neugent, Bobby Gilbert, and Johnny Torres. In appreciation for his devoted service to Waco High School. PopI' Werner has been teaching industrial arts for the past 43 years, and was voted The Outstanding Teacher of Industrial Arts Award in 1968. He has built the trophy cases in the halls, the large bulletin boards, as well as much of the shelving in the library. Besides his industrial works, Pop' was the assistant basketball coach in 1926-1927, and he coached and trained the cheerleaders. This, however, does not end his numerous talents. In addition to having been active in sports, and his continuing years of teaching Industrial Arts, Pop Werner started the first WHS male quartet. In community service, Pop,' started the first Cub Scout pack in Waco in 1929, and was a cub scout master for 10 years. He is a member of the Waco Masonic Lodge and an rider at the First Presbyterian Church where he has served as youth worker, soloist, and choir director. Waco High is proud to recognize such an outstanding individual. Larry Perez and Joe Casillas observe how to operate a lathe. Members of the sixth period class are working diligently. i X f iivif X.. Little watched and cared for, the Junior Class has blossomed into flower of leadership academically, athletically, and talent wise. Juniors are members of the different honor societies and service clubs. Juniors have performed with ease in the choirs, band, and speech activities. Also Juniors have held key positions on the football, basketball, baseball, and track teams. A junior girl was one of our cheerleaders, and many junior girls were nominated for Homecoming Queen. With these well-earned achievements, the Junior Class should be taken off the shelf and put into an honored position. Into their hands will ball luck, prosperity, and richness of character. Academically the sophomores have conformed and contributed to the rigid standards of high school study. As the newest link in our chain of students, the Sophomores have given their upperclassmen the satisfaction that comes when someone under their guidance excels and does well in their efforts. Studies show a majority of girls who learn to cook on an electric range in home economics classes hope they will always have an electric range to cook on! Among the reasons they give for electricity's popularity are It's cleaner, heat is more accurately controlled, it's more modern, and gives you all the newest cooking conveniences, like the self-cleaning oven. A new electric range is so efficiently designed it cooks the food, not the air around it - and keeps your kitchen cooler. With automatic controls, it'll even cook your oven meals while you're away from home. Enjoy the easy, modern way to cook. Acting as an official gives the member an opportunity to teach sportmanship, good conduct, and fair play to the inexperienced players. In addition, the student official is given the chance to supervise large numbers of people and to broaden his overall knowledge of sports. Tigers scored their only touchdown on a 1-yard plunge by Leonard Williams. Johnny Tabor missed the point after, and it was 14-6, Arlington at the half. The Tigers T.D. topped off a 57-yard drive in 12 plays. The Tigers drove to the Jackets 14 early in the third quarter only to lose the ball on a fumble. Neither team threatened for the rest of the period. Arlington Heights had four touch downs in the last quarter on 44, 42, and 25 yard plays and a l-yard plunge to end the Tiger's nightmare. KILLEEN Highly rated Killeen Kangeroos shut out the Tigers by a score of 23-O. The Roos scored first on a 69-yard drive after returning the Tigers kicked off to their own 31- yard line. The mighty Tigers started a drive early in the second quarter only to be stopped by an untimely inter- ception. The interception W a s turned into a Killeen touchdown as Don Hardeman romped 45 yards on the first play from scrimmage. Almost returning the kickoff to pay dirt, the Tigers finally stopped at the Killeen 27. Four incomplete passes stopped the Tigers cold and the Roos took over. Defensive standouts f o r the Bengles were Charlie Parmes, Glenn Hardin, Johnny Dodd, and Don Moses. On the first play from scrimmage, Leonard Williams bruised through the Mustang line for the six pointer. The extra point was blocked. Again the Tigers pounced on a Mustang fumble and two plays later, Hiram Alexander ran for 36 yards to pay dirt. At the half, the score was 14-13, for Thomas Jefferson. It was a battle of the defenses in the third period and it remained 14-13. The Mustangs scored two touchdowns in the fourth period to put the game on ice. Final score was 29-13, Thomas Jefferson. The Tigers won the toss and chose to receive. The Rebels held tight and forced the Bengals to punt. Johnny Tabor got off a 52 yarder, but to no avail. Leonard Scott, the Rebel's do-everything man, took it on his own 20 and ran 80 yards for Travis's first TD . Travis's second six-pointer came late in the second quarter on a 1- yard plunge. The two point conversion failed. At the end of the first half it was 13-0 in favor of Austin. With 2:53 left in the third quarter, Leonard Scott was again given the call and he broke away for 52 yards to set up the Rebels third touchdown. The Tigers got on the scoreboard on a 5-yard plunge by Leonard Williams with only 1:50 gone in the last quarter. Tabor's kick was good and it was 20-7 , in favor of Austin. Seven plays later, the Rebels caught the Tigers in their own end zone for a safety and two points, to end the scoring. The Tiger defense was tough and held the highly rated Jackets to only two touchdowns by intercepting two passes and recovering two fumbles. Leading the Tiger defense were Robert Long, Glenn Hardin, and Llyod Spivey. The Tigers, only real threat was when they reached the Cleburne thirty yard line on a fourth and 6 situa- tion. Johnny Tabor attempted a field goal but it was off to the side. Cleburne did not score again until the fourth quarter, the score climaxed a 70-yard drive. The Tiger defense again forced a missed extra point and the game ended 12-O, a Cleburne victory. DAVID SMITH Senior Guard The Tiger defense proved tough against University. UNIVERSITY A 65-yard punt return by University with 5:20 remaining to play in the game put the game on ice for the Trojans, as the Tigers suffered a 19-17 and a fifth defeat in as many starts. The Tigers started the scoring when Eddie Ermis recovered a fumble on the Trojans 3-yard line. The Tigers failed to move the ball over the goal line in three plays and were forced to try a field goal. Johnny Tabor booted a 47-yarder to put three points on the board. The field goal sparked the Trojans and they took the kickoff 62 yards to the Tigers 3. They scored on the next play and with the extra point, led 7-3. The Tigers took the kick to their own 33 but scored seven plays later as Leonard Williams ran it over from the 14. University wasforced to punt but Hiram Alexander fumbled and the Trojans recovered on the Tiger 25, The Trojans scored six plays afterwards and Went into the lead once again with a tally of 13-10. To keep the Broncos wondering, Tabor booted one from 43 yards out to give Waco a 6-0 lead at the half. T h e Tigers held their lead through the third period and things were looking glum for the Bronco fans. Then, in t h e fourth, the Broncos took the lead away from the Tigers on two touchdown passes and put the game out of reach. The Tiger defense was led by Fred Smith, Johnny Dodd, and Robert Long. Final score in the game was Bryan 14-Waco 6. Mike Scott 1231 attempts to knock down a University pass RICHFIELD A 95 yard opening kickoff return by Hiram Alexander paved the way for the 12-7 victory over cross-town rivals Richfield Rams. The win gives Waco High the edge in the series played between the two teams, 4-3, and a 1-9 season record. The kick carried to the Tiger 5 where Leonard Williams hauled it in and started to his right. Alexander passed behind Williams and took a lateral and streaked upfield for the score. The extra point kick was blocked but Waco High led 6-O. The second Tiger scoring march started when a bad punt by Richfield set the ball on the Ram 45. From there the Tigers scored 8 plays later. The extra point pass failed and Waco High led 12-0 with 5:47 left in the first half. Starting the fourth quarter of play, the Rams marched to the Waco High 17 before a brusing tackle by Robert Long saved a sure score. The Rams had their last chance for victory but failed as the Tiger defensive backs kept the Ram pass receivers from catcliing passes. Steve Wilson and Mike Scott had fine defensive plays for the night. The Tigers took over the ball and stalled to preserve a 12-7 victory. 151 ? Abilene using its deadly two-platoon system handed the Tigers their first defeat of the tournament by a score of 77-49. The Tigers led by the 15 points by Robert Long and followed by Ralph Sancillo with 14 made a fine showing along with their teammates in holding the fine Abilene team to a final game margin of only 28 points. In their Saturday morning consolation game the Tigers ripped Moore High 55-40. Long again took high point honors with 20 points followed by Sancillo with 10, Wilson with 8, and Donaldson with 6. The Tigers, battling for top consolation honors Saturday afternoon, were handed their second defeat of the tournament by Carter-Riverside of Dallas.
