Burleson, this living monument glories in the memories of past school years and helps create the historical atmosphere of Baylor University. Many VVaco High School seniors will soon find themselves a part of this inspirational atmosphere and heritage that is so very distinctly Baylor's. Waco University, as it was called then, was the first co-educational school in the South and the second in America. It also has the distinction of being the only insti- tution of any kind, now in existence, that was chartered by the Republic of Texas. lt came into being at Independence near Houston but moved to Waco during the first year of the Civil War. After twenty-five years of success, Waco University became Baylor University in 1886. The new name was in honor of judge R. E. B. Baylor, the jurist and preacher Who Wrote the charter and made a large cash contribution to the school. Baylor practically belonged to Dr. Burleson from the beginning. He devoted his life to it, selecting the faculty and trustees and enabling it to carry on with his own money. A bronze statue on the campus honors this great educator. lf he could see Baylor today, he would realize that his hopes have been fulfilled and his greatest dream has come true. Page IO
