After hiking, driving, or bicycling to l,oy'er's Leap, nothing could be finer than to look down froin the cliff and recall this lndian story. One can almost see the Huaco maiden and her Apache lover standing on the limestone bluff overlooking the Bosque River. The voices of her angered father and brothers come nearer. Rather than bc parted in life, the lovers have decided to die together. NVhispering a few words of courage to the maiden, the Apache brave folds her tightly' in his arnisg and they leap together from the cliff. Today. crowds of XVacoans fill the park in search of !'t'S1' and recreation. There are facilities for picnickers, a swinuning pool, playground equipment, a zoo, room for all types of games, and beauty' enough to suit any poet or dreamer. A favorite spot for picnics of Vvaco High School clubs, L'arneron Park rings with youthful laughter as it echoes through the ancient trees. ln answer come the chants of the poetic Huacos. handing down their le-fends of loye and honor Punt' Q P:-

ADMINISTRATION BIT ILDING How many of you, when passing the Administration Building at Fourth and VVebster, have thought about its being the first home of YVaco High School? It was called Central High School in those days, and the more ambitious young Vvacoans sought knowledge in its small classrooms. Built in the early' I88O's, the high school consisted of two frame buildings. Later, these were replaced by a large brick structure, but the increased attendance soon made it necessary for the high school to change buildings again. At Thanksgiving time, in IQI 1, the new school was completedg and Waco High School moved to its present location on Columbus Avenue. VVaco was the first city in the state to utilize and perfect her public school system. Although there was much hesitation about starting such a system, public schools made rapid progress in VVaco, the 'lAthens of Texas. after taking the first hurdles successfully. Viewing VVaco High School as the great institution it is now, we find it hard to believe that it started on such a small scale, with only five graduates in the class of ISS7. As long as the Administration Building remainsi standing, it should be looked upon as a landmark by VVaco alumni, for its first glimmering light helped make Ivaco High School the beacon of knowledge it is today. Burleson, this living monument glories in the memories of past school years and helps create the historical atmosphere of Baylor University. Many VVaco High School seniors will soon find themselves a part of this inspirational atmosphere and heritage that is so very distinctly Baylor's. Waco University, as it was called then, was the first co-educational school in the South and the second in America. It also has the distinction of being the only insti- tution of any kind, now in existence, that was chartered by the Republic of Texas. lt came into being at Independence near Houston but moved to Waco during the first year of the Civil War. After twenty-five years of success, Waco University became Baylor University in 1886. The new name was in honor of judge R. E. B. Baylor, the jurist and preacher Who Wrote the charter and made a large cash contribution to the school. Baylor practically belonged to Dr. Burleson from the beginning. He devoted his life to it, selecting the faculty and trustees and enabling it to carry on with his own money. A bronze statue on the campus honors this great educator. lf he could see Baylor today, he would realize that his hopes have been fulfilled and his greatest dream has come true. Page IO
