ADMINISTRATION BIT ILDING How many of you, when passing the Administration Building at Fourth and VVebster, have thought about its being the first home of YVaco High School? It was called Central High School in those days, and the more ambitious young Vvacoans sought knowledge in its small classrooms. Built in the early' I88O's, the high school consisted of two frame buildings. Later, these were replaced by a large brick structure, but the increased attendance soon made it necessary for the high school to change buildings again. At Thanksgiving time, in IQI 1, the new school was completedg and Waco High School moved to its present location on Columbus Avenue. VVaco was the first city in the state to utilize and perfect her public school system. Although there was much hesitation about starting such a system, public schools made rapid progress in VVaco, the 'lAthens of Texas. after taking the first hurdles successfully. Viewing VVaco High School as the great institution it is now, we find it hard to believe that it started on such a small scale, with only five graduates in the class of ISS7. As long as the Administration Building remainsi standing, it should be looked upon as a landmark by VVaco alumni, for its first glimmering light helped make Ivaco High School the beacon of knowledge it is today.
