ADMINISTRATION BIT ILDING How many of you, when passing the Administration Building at Fourth and VVebster, have thought about its being the first home of YVaco High School? It was called Central High School in those days, and the more ambitious young Vvacoans sought knowledge in its small classrooms. Built in the early' I88O's, the high school consisted of two frame buildings. Later, these were replaced by a large brick structure, but the increased attendance soon made it necessary for the high school to change buildings again. At Thanksgiving time, in IQI 1, the new school was completedg and Waco High School moved to its present location on Columbus Avenue. VVaco was the first city in the state to utilize and perfect her public school system. Although there was much hesitation about starting such a system, public schools made rapid progress in VVaco, the 'lAthens of Texas. after taking the first hurdles successfully. Viewing VVaco High School as the great institution it is now, we find it hard to believe that it started on such a small scale, with only five graduates in the class of ISS7. As long as the Administration Building remainsi standing, it should be looked upon as a landmark by VVaco alumni, for its first glimmering light helped make Ivaco High School the beacon of knowledge it is today. After hiking, driving, or bicycling to l,oy'er's Leap, nothing could be finer than to look down froin the cliff and recall this lndian story. One can almost see the Huaco maiden and her Apache lover standing on the limestone bluff overlooking the Bosque River. The voices of her angered father and brothers come nearer. Rather than bc parted in life, the lovers have decided to die together. NVhispering a few words of courage to the maiden, the Apache brave folds her tightly' in his arnisg and they leap together from the cliff. Today. crowds of XVacoans fill the park in search of !'t'S1' and recreation. There are facilities for picnickers, a swinuning pool, playground equipment, a zoo, room for all types of games, and beauty' enough to suit any poet or dreamer. A favorite spot for picnics of Vvaco High School clubs, L'arneron Park rings with youthful laughter as it echoes through the ancient trees. ln answer come the chants of the poetic Huacos. handing down their le-fends of loye and honor Punt' Q P:- HRTHQJL' 'was the 'word of faitlz and bravely -was it kept,- lVith neiver--wearying zeal tlzaf faltered not, nor slept, Our .fllma Mater' toiled, and 'while .vlze firmly laid The deep foundation-fwalls, at all her toil .tlle prayed. flnd men fwlzo lofved the truth berause it made them free, find clearly safw the twofold fword of God agree, Reading from Nature's bool? and from the Biblelt page By the same infward ray that grow: from age to age, W'ere built like lifving stoner llfat beacon to uplift, find drawing liglzt from Heafv- en gaive to the world the gift. -Henry Van Dyke BURLESON HALL AT BAYLOR Named for the Wife of Dr. Rufus C. Burleson, this living monument glories in the memories of past school years and helps create the historical atmosphere of Baylor University. Many VVaco High School seniors will soon find themselves a part of this inspirational atmosphere and heritage that is so very distinctly Baylor's. Waco University, as it was called then, was the first co-educational school in the South and the second in America. It also has the distinction of being the only insti- tution of any kind, now in existence, that was chartered by the Republic of Texas. lt came into being at Independence near Houston but moved to Waco during the first year of the Civil War. After twenty-five years of success, Waco University became Baylor University in 1886. The new name was in honor of judge R. E. B. Baylor, the jurist and preacher Who Wrote the charter and made a large cash contribution to the school. Baylor practically belonged to Dr. Burleson from the beginning. He devoted his life to it, selecting the faculty and trustees and enabling it to carry on with his own money. A bronze statue on the campus honors this great educator. lf he could see Baylor today, he would realize that his hopes have been fulfilled and his greatest dream has come true. CHRISTMAS ASSEMBLY c,NE of the outstanding assemblies of the IQ46 school year was the inspirational - Christmas program presented by the lllusic Department ot VVaco High School. Bliss Grace Hamilton, standing opposite the familiar manger scene, led the chorus in Yuletide songs. The students joined in the singing with enthusiasm. This enthusiasm was characteristic of the assemblies throughout the year. During the first assembly on September 27, members of the Student Government Were pre- sented. Assemblies of special interest Were the soul-stirring musical program featuring Rubinoff and his violin and a humorous talk by Boyce House. On November 8, the Senior lylixed Chorus presented a program. On February 18, lVIr. RI. H. Bruner of the E. I. Dupont De Nemours Company spoke on HResearch in Everyday Livingf' Other assemblies were the National Honor Society initiations, the Senior Recognition programs, and the special government assemblies. The cooperation of the students made these assemblies possible more often during the year. Page I2 L ' ' , . X 1 W4 'Q 1 suing, 3 136, ,.4 4' CULTY i pil-.1 WACU HIGH SCHOOL Pfzgc I4 me. The first sponsor was lllr. E. Douglas xlohnson, now principal of North xlunior High School. lfntler lllr. blohnson's supervision, the constitution was drafted and approved in the fall of IQ33 with eight charter members. For five years lllr. .lohnson served as spon- sor. When llflr. Johnson left in 1938, Bliss Zou Steele Daniel hecame sponsor of the club. To advance the literary activities of the school. the English Literary Society sponsors annual poetry and essay contests. Each term the society presents medals to the outstanding English student of VVaco High School, North Junior High School, East Junior High School, South xlunior High School, and West -lunior High School. Throughout its existence, the club has cooperated with all school-sponsored drives. It is the aim of the English Literary Society to carry on. as it has in the past. individual literary activities of VVaco High School. XYayn: Teel, Billy Schrader. Richard Moser. Frances Coleman, librarian, to form a club of the student assist- ants of the YVaco High School Library. As the constitution had been previously drafted by one of the students, it was voted on at this first meeting. At a later meeting the name HLibrary Club was selected. lhfrs. Coleman died early in the summer of 1938, and the following fall the club voted to change the name to Coleman Library Club, honoring its first sponsor. lVIrs. Helen K. Fuller be- came sponsor of the club and served during the two terms of 1938-1939. lN'Irs. Lucile VV. Raley has been sponsor from 1939 to the present time. The purpose of the club is to encourage the reading of good books, to teach the general prin- ciples of library service, and to engender a feeling of friendliness toward the library of Waco High School. Any student may belong to the Coleman Library Club who is interested in books and libra- ries. The majority of club programs are planned and produced by members. There are at least three joint meetings with other school clubs during each year, and guest speakers are asked tor special feature programs. Noteworthy projects of the Coleman Library Club in recent years have been the sponsorship of HBook VVeek', in Waco High School, compilation of scrapbooks for the junior Red Cross, collec- tion of material for Christmas boxes for soldiers at Camp Hood, and the arrangement of exhibits in homerooms on special holidays. During one term, members of the club collected interesting folders and pamphlets on cities of the South. This material was catalogued and placed in the Ver- tical File to be used for reference. In the 19.1.5 season opener with Jeff Davis of Houston, the Tigers overcame a last half scoring threat from the aerials of the visitors to win 26 to I2. Cotton Lindloff led the Bengal offense, accounting for the initial tally. Kenneth Jumper scored the second and third touchdowns, and Hobby Sallee cliinaxed the VVaco scor- ing when he galloped I2 yards to pay dirt in the last period. The following week on a rain-drenched gridiron, Waco's football machine spun, slipped, and shocked a Denison Yellow Jacket eleven with a I9 to O victory. Marviii Brenner sco1'ed VVaco's first two touchdowns and Lindloff accounted for the last one. Froggie YVillianiS kicked the extra point. Before an overflow crowd in Dallas, YVaco met its first and only defeat of the year as the Highland Park Scotties pushed over a touchdown in the fading moments to tame the Bengals 7 and o. Lindloff carried the ball again and again to lead the crushing VVaco offense as it hammered the Scottie forward wall and cracked through for continual gains. D Qpening the district grind against the Hillsboro eleven, VVaco's Golden Bengals swept the visiting Eagles from the district race with a 33 to 0 win. Scarborough took one of Lindloff's pitches for the third counter. Brenner and Bob Blackstock carried across in the second half. Paced by Brenner. the Tigers thrashed the YVaxahachie Indians 27 to 7. Touch- down number one came when southpaw Sallee passed to Froggie XVilliams, and Brenner took the ball on over after a few plays from scrimmage. A penalty nullined VVilliams' first conversion. Sallee, Brenner, and l,indloff were responsible for the other Tiger tallies. Although playing a bit oH form, the Tigers of Xvaco banished the Tigers from Corsicana to the tune of 53 to O. Page 120 Cotton Lindloff continued his touehdown parade when he bueked over for the first seore after Brenner had reeled off a long run into Corsi territory. Frog Williziiiis again came forth with his plaee-kicked extra point. Brenner carried over for the second and third tallies and Scarborough drove through for the fourth touchdown. Little ,Iune Clark of the losers gave the VVaeoans some trouble, but .lack Simpson. Dan YVhite, and hlurphv led the way in keeping those speed demons in cheek. The reserves took charge for XVaeo in the last of the gzuue with Bill llozier plowing over for the final score. Completely annihilating the Bryan liroues on their own field, the Tigers turned up with one of their best performances of the year. XVaeo opened up like El house afire with Lindloll and Brenner carrying the pigskiu deep into Bryan territorvg then Brenner crashed over. Brenner also went over for the second Tiger tally. Scarborough had set up the svore with a brilliant run. Lonnie Griffith kicked goal. The Ennis Lions fell easy prey to the Tigers by a .to to IQ decision with Froggie XVillianis scoring first as he Caught a pass and followed with the conversion. Then Scarborough pushed over, and again VVillianis booted the extra point. llozier carried over for the third seore, and Griffith kicked goal. A safety gave the Bengals a 23 to U lead. lJozier's passes carried the Tigers on with Griffith turning a Lion aerial into a 'lliger score. Penalties held back Illiillj' touchdowns for the YVacoans. Ennis scored three touchdowns against Bengal reserves, a long punt return, a Tiger fumble, and a blocked punt being responsible. The Tigers again made pre-publicised hard game an easy victory as they downed the Temple YVildcats 33 to 6. Temple scored first, and it appeared as if one of those Well known Tiger-Wilcleat upsets with Temple the up-setter was taking place. VVaco quickly tied the score and went into the lead as Froggie VVilliams made good his conversion attempt. One of the Bengal scores came when Nick Kazanas blocked a punt, and Froggie VVilliams scored. All of the Tigers starred as the contest turned into a one-Way scoring spree. Although weakened by a Hu epidemic, the Bengals blazed over the Breckenridge Bucks 20 to LJ to win the Bi-District Championship. Pilot' IQU The following week XVaco again took to the road, going to Houston to meet the Goose Creek eleven. It was a defensive contest all the way. The Ganders pushed over one counter in the first half and one in the last half only to have both called back for an infraction of the rules. VVaeo rumbled over the Gander goal for the only score of the game and won the right to play in the State Final contest against the Highland Park Scotties. It was mid-winter with a spring atmosphere as the VVaco Bengals and the Hi- Park Scots clashed in the State Championship tilt at the Cotton Howl in Dallas. It was a grueling first half for the lVacoans with the Highlanders showing all the class and scoring one touchdown and out-playing the Tigers to a noticeable degree. It was a grueling second half for the Highlanders with the XVaeoans showing all the class and scoring one touchdown and missing a field goal by only a few feet to out-play the Scots. SMITH, R. VVIIARTON VVHITF VVILLIAMQ FRPDDIE Page I-QI VVILLIAMS, JAMES XVILLIAMS, HAROLD Coach Stiteler had changed his defense during halves, and the Seotties were stopped cold. VVaeo was behind and needed a T.D. and an extra point to tie it up. The aggressive Cotton Lindloff dropped back deep into his own territory and heaved a long aerial to the racing Froggie Williarlis, who grabbed the pigskin, galloped off, and left the proverbial 'fspeedyl' Scot safety man to score. Then Froggie kicked the extra point to give the Tigers a tie, 7 to 7. O honor the co-champions of Texas football, a banquet was given at the Roose- velt Hotel -lanuary 4, 1946. Befitting the glory brought to VVaco High School by the Tiger team, the banquet was the most elaborate in years. The guest speaker, Nlr. Del lVIorgan, carried out the champion theme in his speech by giving the qualities of a good football player as he spelled the word vhanzfnion. For C, he stressed Courageq H, Htonorg A, fluzhilionp NI, fltlorzzlsg P, Per- feetionj I, Izzitizztifvej O, Of-4lll7ZiZIIfi071,' and N. Nrzlional Unity. During the banquet, blue ribbons with Champion printed on them were presented to the team, coaches, managers, and yell leaders. The boys gave several yells, and the parents of the boys were introduced by Coach Harry Stiteler. On the front of the gold and white programs was a picture of the Tiger team. The place cards were pipe-cleaner figures in the form of players and yell leaders. lVIiss Lulu Strickland read her original poems about each of the boys on the team. The verse about Clifford Lindloff was as follows: His ll triple-llzrrfzt mil lzrzfh zviilzou! any rlouht. Q ' l f I TEXAS is on the march INDUSTRI- ALLY . . driving forward under full , power to provide more jobs and continuing opportunities for its people. During war years, Texas demonstrated its industrial . fulfilled S6,4l8,8l0,000 worth of war con- ' I '- tracts involving the production of planes I and arts, ex losives, s nthetic rubber, ' P P Y steel, magnesium, gasoline, oil, and a long list of other materials and supplies requir- 5 ing skilled labor. ,1 During the war years, Texas' industrial X production rose from 3s45o,0oo,ooo an- nually to two and one-half times that amount on war contracts alone. This has resulted in expansion of plant facilities and labor force, and peace-time plans which call for even greater industrial production than during the war. As rapidly as building materials and machinery be- come available, Texas cities and towns are witnessing the building of new and the expansion of existing fac- tories and shops. Texas has everything needed by and for industry . . . an abundance and diversity of raw f' materials and natural resources for convert- ing into manufactured products, mild cli- ' mate, excellent transportation facilities, . highly intelligent and easily trained native labor . . . and abundant cheap electric power. Furthermore, Texas is the gateway . . to the Latin Americas, whether by land, by ,,,. . sea or by air. By the processes of reconversion and by wise and careful planning, Texans are determined to make the most of their E? if i x state's vast resources. Texas Power 84 Light Company, a pio- neer Texas institution, joins all of Texas in inviting the immediate attention of American indus trialists to the opportunities offered by the Lone Star State. As abundant, dependable and low-cost electric power from TP8cI. transmission lines was a vital factor in producing for the war, so is it now in producinff for peace. This Company's industrial-minded manpov. er, as well as its vast power facilities, are at the disposal of those seeking to develop new or to expand existing in- dustrial opportunities in Texas.
