' une Class Poem VICTORY The V that stands for Victory Is like a shining light, In the greatest war of history, For freedom and for right. It guides our boys over there, On land and on the sea,' Our pilots flying through the air, And even you and me. Although we do not march in ranks, hVe've vital work to do, By making planes and ships and tanks And ammunition, too. For win this war, we really must, Or slaves we'll always be,' No rights, no freedom for the just, No home, no liberty. America! The land we love! We'll fight to keep you free,' And with the help of God above, We're sure of Victory! s The schoolroom is a battle-field Where war goes on by day,' We keep old Ignorance in retreat, While Knowledge holds full sway. The soldiers are the boys and girls, Who make the daily raids,' Use text books for their weapons, Their ammunition, Grades. Now that our graduation's nigh, We sing and shout with glee,' For here within dear Waco High, We've won our victory! -GERALDINE SPWEY X' . ..,..qhf-- ...L 5 M..

The cares of life all fell away,' The world became a better place. A 'vision shone like break of day- A symbol of a greater race. I saw a people strong and tall, Whose step was firm and unafraid, Whose mighty strength, a tofw'ring wall, On a foundation of faith was laid. The fields were green, the crops stood high,' The factories sang a rhapsodyj The buildings stood tall against the sky In a land that was holy and pure and free. Some human frailties were there,' But meanness, greed, and hate were gone. An aura of happiness hung in the air, As children's 'voices rose in song. I stretched forth my hands in keen delight, As if to grasp that lofvelinessj But like a wraith it faded from sight, And I stood again in loneliness. I had returned to a world of war,' And yet a hope remained in me, A knowledge that the day was not far, When peace should come with victory. -SUE WILSON 5 Elk. L..

fr-Q Mid-Year Class History IN MANY respects Waco High School is like a mill. At the beginning ' of each term, raw materials gleaned from junior high schools are fed into it. Three years later, the graduates come forth, all looking much the same in caps and gowns, and carrying diplomas identically worded. Each one has followed a prescribed course of study and has worried about grades and book cards and library fines and absence excuses and all the hundreds of little cares that plague the existence of high school students. But the high school mill does not grind all students alike. Al- though each one has received the same basic treatment, he has been given many chances to develop his personality and expand his range of interests. And so it is that members of the Class of January, 1944, have made use of their opportunities in different ways. Some students preferred foreign languages, some history, and others specialized in science, commercial courses, home economics, English and speech. Some of us became engrossed in school government, band, dc- bate, glee club, dramatics, basketball, orchestra, football, declama- tion and club work, while others merely remained good citizens, and while still others majored in social life. We all worked hard collect- ing scrap metal and paper, growing victory gardens, giving time to the USO, Red Cross, and civilian defense and buying war bonds and stamps. As we stand, in our caps and gowns, on the threshold of life, we have many different plans. Most of the boys will be entering the arm- ed service soong some of us will get jobs, and others of us will go to college. But all of us will look back on our high school days as some of the happiest in our lives, and we resolve that into whatever part of the world wc may go, we shall carry proudly the name of Waco High, and that in return, our alma mater shall not be ashamed of us. -BETTY KNISELEY l
