The fatal turn at Eighth Street led us to a large, an overwhelmingly large building. Wie boldly entered it, making an altogether Fierce and daring appearance. The first floor, which met our gaze as we entered, looked very fresh and green. It was fairly sprouting with Slimes- innocent faced Slimes, as yet not initiated into the mysterious ways of High School life. This, we learned, was Slimedom. Thinking that this new prospect would furnish us the thrills that we craved, we promptly entered our names on the long list of adventure. lt seemed to us inevitable that personages of our distinction and worldly wisdom would join one of the upper tribes such as the Sopho- mores, juniors, or Seniors. But our high hopes were dashed to earth when we were kindly informed that all green young things belong in Slimedom. They also told us that we would possess a little sophisti- cation, maybe even be normal at the end of our conquest. This bare- faced insult and bold attack upon our intelligence caused our fighting blood to rise within us. Daring adventurers of our superiority to be thus ridiculedl Nevertheless we curbed our pride a little and with a will that would surely conquer entered Slimedom. The year's proceedings in Slimedom dealt our pride a severe blow, ln fact, the weaker members of our band dropped out, unable to endure the strenuous life of the Slime. Our entrance into the Sophomore Tribe was a grand and glorious triumph. With proud disdain we could now look down upon the poor unfortunates in Slimedoml The next advancement, which was to Juniors, took some of the swelling out of our heads and then our hats fit us better. We gradually began to realize that things were not what they seemed-that perhaps we didn't know as much as we had thought we did. And now we find ourselves in the last stage of the transformation- the last chance to become sophisticated. Some of us are as near normal as we will ever get to be, while others will become more so when they enter College, where they will undergo the same process of transforma- tion only to a greater extent. Anyway, we still have enough conceit left to agree that: Every day and in every way We are getting better and better. IO, I934 Dearest Lorena: I have just heard that you have finished your study of music in Europe and will soon be home. You must be home by February I, for the l923 class is going to have a reunion. Oh, this is from Georgia Handley, our old class president, now Mrs. Prentice Rice. Prentice has made a great success in banking, and I am sure they are happy. I'll leave on the next ship. At the last summons I hurried on board, and who should be the Hrst person my eyes fell on but Captain Donald Wilkins. I learned from Donald that Bobbie joe I-Iope, Ruth Pearce and Mary Markusfeld were on their way home after having been engaged in Red Cross work. VVe landed in New York on a rainy Friday, December I3. In the lobby of the hotel we noticed that an excited crowd was gathered around a distinguished looking gentleman. Cn inquiring, we found him to be Sunshine Gilmore, the author of the best book in circulation. Sun- shine in his old enthusiastic way joined our band. Vife decided to spend a few days in New York. The next evening two famous stars were to sing at the I-Iippodrome. To our great sur- prise and pleasure we found them to be our old classmates Josephine Kemendo and Minnie Durham. They decided to go to the reunion with us. Our next pleasure trip was to Coney Island. We laid aside our dignity for one short day and became kids. Our first joy ride was on the hobby-horses. A gruff voice demanded our tickets, but instead of giving him our tickets, we shook hands with Bertram jackson. Hearing a call Get 'em while they're hot, boys, we had a longing for some hamburgers. Approaching the stand, we saw the familiar faces of our class twins, Ross and Roy Stanley. En route to Waco we stopped in California. There we saw a beautiful building and later discovered that it was the Bryan Aynesworth Hospital. Reading the San Francisco Times, we noticed that B. D. Reynolds was planning a trip to South America to further his study of Civil Engin- eering. Another item told that Miss Helen Morgan was voted the most beautiful girl in Hollywood and we were not surprised to learn that Wil- liam Schroeder was doing his best to get in the movies, These four being added to our crowd, we started for our Old Home Town. While we were waiting for the train to start, a jolly face peered through the window. It was Professor D. Stovall, and he, too, was going to the reunion. They had many things to tell us. Among them were that Eunice Killion and Olga Lemke were still teaching school. They also told that Dan Cupid had been busy in our absence, and the victims were Lucile Williamson and Clarence Davis, Lucile Ashbrook and H. K. jett. They were sorry to say that Lawyer John jenkins had been employed in the divorce proceedings of Lorene Tomlinson and George Wolfe. We are sure that John settled their matrimonial tangle to the good of all concerned. As we were coming from the station to the Raleigh, we noticed pa sign that read Winchester Bros., Sports and Athletics. We stopped to see if it were Robert and William and sure enough it was! They told us that Thurman Saxon was noted football star. It was a jolly crowd that assembled at the Raleigh on this February l, l935, with Mr. and Mrs. George Peoples as host and hostess. fMrs. Peoples is known to our -old class as Miss Velma Slonel. Among those who gave us a hearty welcome were Rev. Carl Carson, pastor of the first Baptist Church, Mayor Harold Clark, Ettie Claire Jolley, teacher of art in Baylor University, and Ruth Montgomery, owner of a unique novelty shop. Waco High School is still doing splendid work with Woody Hodson as principal and Claude W'eaver and Ruth Stovall as members of the faculty. Xvell, l'm going to use that metaphor in my wonderful history of the Senior Class of l923. l see in my mind's eye a great brick building located on a busy street in the flourishing city of Waco. This structure shall be the rock and we, the Class of 1923, the waves breaking against the rocl.--. We broke, yes we broke all right-and I'm afraid we've been broke ever since. We have learned all the forms of that irregular verb, break, broke, broken. We have exhausted our finances fwhich means being brokej we have had experience where even our hearts have been shattered, reguiring all the philosophy of the ages to get the broken bits in shape for a fresh campaign. Now my metaphor of the waves dashing against the rock must not be taken lightly, from lack of seriousness on my part to make it forceful. Vve as waves could not of course expect to make much impression on the granite walls of the Waco High School. But the rock, while remaining unmoved by our surging mass, certainly has impressed us. We have learned not only educational facts, which would soon be- come monotonous, but we have also learned to make life-long friends and to enter into various school activities with enthusiasm. As a class all of us have learned to work and play together. We have had the won- derful thrill of watching the I922 Tigers win every game played in the last two seasons. In years to come many of us will look back with pleas- ure on the happiest days of our life, as those spent in Waco High. Before the coming of June we also want the teachers to know how very much we appreciate the interest and sympathetic aid which they have constantly shown in us. -Mary Barnett. He produced the lighting, sensational eleven of 1922 which scored 550 points without a loss to mar its record. All Waco, in fact, sport lovers throughout the state pay homage to Tyson. Nationally famous ,critics have commented on the sensational sccccss of this man, who recognizes no peer when it comes to handling boys. Waco will lose this year by graduation many of her brilliant stars. These jmen will he hard to replace. hut the Tigers retain their greatest asset. the star who has been largely responsible lor Waco High's all-victorious record. That star is Paul Tyson, and never did he shine with more lustre than in the great season of this year. Practically the same thing may be said of Coach Bernhauser, assistant to Coach Tyson. He has done much to bring to us the championship, more perhaps than we realize. Sisco was a unani- mous all-state selection, and was easily the ,outstanding linesman of interscholastic circles of the state. Combined with his sensational natural ability, he had the knack of divining the plays put on by opponents. He was an ideal leader, a constant inspiration to his teammates, and when he went out of that memorable Abi- lene game with a torn ligament, it came dangerously near costing the Tigers the title, but when things were darkest, he limped back into the battle, and though so badly crippled he was barely able to stand, by words of encouragement he strengthened the morale of his teammates, and the Tigers came back with a glorious victory. The Waco team will miss Big Jack next year, but some college team will welcome him with open arms. Such foot- ball players as Sisco are few and far 888 88888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 Xi 8 8888888888888888888888888888888888888 8888888888888888888888 8888888888888888888888888888888888888 THE DAISY CHAIN JOHN fPomej McCULLOUGH En Pottie McCullough played his first year with the Tigers last season He played end all year but did not find his real position until the closing game of the year when because of a series f injuries Tyson was forced to shift him to guard There he played his best game of the year though he was a consistent end and xt will be at guard that he will probably be found next year GEORGE WOLFE Guard One hundred and forty pounds of determination was George Wolfe He played a guard position broke through his heavier opponents repeatedly and the harder the game the better he played. l-le scaled new heights in the closing game of the year. and won a position on the second all-state team, a won- deful tribute indeed when his weight handicap is considered. There are few l40-pound guards, but George Wolfe was certainly one. He will not be back next year. ROBERT BRANDON Tackle Bob Brandon came into his own during the Tig- ers' championship season. He started out as guard but was shifted to tackle, and his side of the line was always strong. He played a highly consistent brand of football throughout the season and was one of the veterans who made possible the cham- pionship. 88888888 8888888888888888888888888888888888888888 88888888888888888888888888,8888888888 88888888 888 888888888888888888888888 8888888888888888888888888888888888888888 8 i d - . . Rowell was having a great season, playing the game of his young life until the Allen game, when he went out with an injured knee, and that knee gave him much trouble for the balance of the season. He played a wonderful game in the second contest with Temple with the knee tightly bandaged, but was forced out of the Abilene game after the first play. Rowell was a brilliant tackle and will be missed next year. LOUIS SLADE End Only a substitute was Louis Slade, but it was Slade, if you please, who intercepted the pass in the final two minutes of play of the Abilene game, which gave johnson the opportunity for the held goal which won the game. Slade is growing fast, and promises to win a regular berth at end next season. CLYDE QAbe1 KELLEY Fulllmclf Abe Kelley, the Flying Irishmani' of the Tiger team, was shifted from his customary position at end to a full-back place at the beginning of the l922 season. And at his new position he found himself, delivering in a manner that proved a reve- lation to Coach Tyson and Waco fans. He reach- ed the height of success in the second Temple game, when he ploughed through the strong Wildcat line as if it were so much tissue paper. He has another year with the Tigers, and with improvement such as he showed last season, he bids fair to push Boody johnson for baclcfield honors. That was George Fall, the l40-pound quarterback, who played his last year for the Tigers during the 1922 season, and through his super-generalship he was a potent factor in bringing the state title to Waco. It was the wonder- ful leadership of Fall which made johnson win the championship game from Abilene. He knew the play to call and when to call it. And he could carry that ball. having a deceptive side step. ln the big game, however, he was ordered not to do so. His generalship was too valuable to take a chance on losing the contest for the gain of a few yards. A difficult task will confront Coach Tyson next fall when he endeavors to replace this yuong man. JOHN DREW fBoody, JOHNSON Half-back. All-Stale Captain-Elect Boody johnson won gridiron honors during the season of 1922 which have seldom or never come to a high school athlete in the South. He was the high scorer among all athletes of the southwest, intercollegiate, high school, and academy. He kicked the longest drop kick for a field goal ever booted in the history of interscholastic football in the state. He ran 99 yards for a touchdown against the strongest team the Tigers met during the season. His super-brilliance in the final game of the season at Fort Worth against Abilene, when he scored all of XVaco's I3 points with two field goals and a touchdown, brought the championship to Waco High. Despite the fact that johnson reached a pinacle last year, which has never before been reached by any Waco High gridiron star, the doughty youngster has not yet reached his peak. He has another year at Waco High. and as captain of the team is due for an even greater season. A splendid inspiration to his teammates, this wonder lad of Texas interscholastic football will be given the opportunity to lead the Tigers to another state title. WIER fRuntl WASHAM Halflmclf They just couldn't keep Runt off the l922 team. Despite his light weight, he was as slippery as an eel, and when johnny Naylor went out with in- juries, Washam was awarded a regular berth at halfback. For a lad of his weight he had wonder- ful endurance, was as hard as nails. and filled Nay- lor's shoes in a manner satisfactory to all concerned. Heill be back next year, and may be used at quar- ter-back. There is no doubt but that he will be somewhere in that backfield. sssssssssssssss s sssss sssssssssssssssssssssssssssxsxssssssssss PAGE Sr.veN'rY-THR SSSSSSSSSXXSN S888 SXSSSSSSSS SS 8,8 XX SSSSSSSXSSXSMSXSSSSSSSSS888 SS8888SSSSSSSSSSNSSSNXSSSSSN XSSSSSSSX F1 F1 g u 888888888888888, I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I 8888 8 8 88888 8's8 88888 888 888888888888888 88888888888888888 8888888888 8888888888888 PAGE SEV!-INTY-FOUR THE DAISY CHAIN EDWARD fliddiej BOLTON End Eddie Bolton was another hard-working youngster, who will probably be rewarded for his splendid efforts next season. He appeared in a few of the early-season games and showed up well. JOHN NAYLOR Half back johnny Naylor, playing his first year as a regular, reached his top form in the game against Allen Academy. Although very light, he could always be depended on for a gain. He was a victim of ill- fortune, however. In the first play of the initial Temple game, he went out with an injured ankle, which proved a very bad sprain, keeping him out for the balance of the season. He is clever in advancing the ball, is a good defensive man, and runs interference well. He should be a real star in l923. SAM COATES End, All-Slate . Big Sam Coates won a warm spot in the heart of every Waco High admirer by his work during the 1922 season. The Tigers could not have won the championship without the aid of Coates. He was shifted from a full-back position to end, but during the season he played everywhere, being shifted about to bolster up the weak spots, and he never failed. He was not outplayed during the year by an op- ponent, and was one of the greatest defensive High School football players in all Texas. On the kick- off he hasn't an equal in high school or intercol- legiate ranks, and he passes well. In a word Sam Coates is a football player such as is dear to the heart of every coach who knows gridiron stars and Coach Tyson realizes the task he has before him rn attempting to replace this man who could play any positron on the team and play it well 8 8's8 ,8 88 8 88888888888888 88888888888 88 88 88888 888 888 88888888888 8888888888888888888888888 8 89 I 8888888888 888888888 888 8 888 888888888888888 88888888888888888 888888888 888888888 88888888 888 8 THE DAISY CHAIN ssxssxs sssxsssssxssssssssss ssssxs ROBERT QGood Lookmgj LOUGHRIDGE. DAISY CHAIN BOYS BA KETBALL COACH G. IVI. SIVIITH-Untiring in his efforts Coach G. IVI. Smith made a splendid record during the I923 basketball season, though he was working under a big handicap at all times. His team was composed of the youngsters who had starred in football, and the gridiron season so far as the Wacoans were concerned did not close until the afternoon of December 22. To Smith went the impossible task of whipping these tired youngsters into top shape for a vigorous basketball season which followed immediately. The teamwork of the Wacoans was brilliant throughout the season, reflecting in a splendid manner the coaching ability of Smith, but the team did not have the oppor- tunity to get the rest it deserved following the arduous football campaign and its work in some games was strangely off color. Despite this handicap, Smith's pupils won the majority of their games played, and too much credit cannot be given Coach Smith along this line. ABE. KELLEY fliiorwardl-Abeis fast on a football field but on a basket- ball court he is even faster. As captain of the team, he set a splendid example. for his teammates to follow and was VVaco's high point man of the year. He reached his top stride against the Aggie Fish, when his sensational baskets brought the Tigers a splendid, unexpected victory. I-le'll be back next year, and ought to be better than ever. LOUIS SLADE. fForwardJ-A substitute of 1922, but a star of 1923 was Louis Slade, rangy center and forward of Coach Smith's quint. He had much more stamina this year than last, but has not yet reached his peak. He should have his best season in 1924. JACK SISCO fCenterJ-bl ack got a late start in basketball this year due to injuries suffered during the football season, but played in his old-time way when he did get back into the game. He played both center and guard, and was Waco's outstanding star in breaking up the passing game of opponents. SAIVI COATES fGuarclD--Playing his second season of basketball, Big Sam showed a marked improvement in his playing. He had worlds of en- durance and stuck to his man like a leech. It took a clever clribbler indeed to get by Sam for a shot. LOUIS CHEEK QGuardl-Louis, star basketeer in the Sunday School league of l922, came out for the Tiger team this year and won a berth im- mediately. Martin did not get in many games, but he was at practice daily and learned much in a basketball way. EDDIE BOLTON fGuardl-Eddie was another substitute who develop- ed rapidly as the season progressed, and who has a splendid basketball future. It will be quite a task to keep him, off any college team next year if he puts forth the same energy and whole-souled efforts which characterized his work this year. CHARLES TAYLOR fcenterl-As substitute center, Charlie Taylor showed real form at times. His goal shooting was always up to par, and he has a splendid basketball future. At about the middle of the season she suffered a fractured limb, which has kept her out of many games. MYRTLE MANER fForwardl-Myrtle is an ideal running mate for Gladys in every respect. She is a hard Hghter and can always be depended upon to be where the ball is. We believe that her motto is Actions speak louder than words. At any rate she lives up to it. Myrtle was placed on one of the all-state teams in the Dallas meet. JOYCE NEEDI-IAM Uumping center, acting captaiiij-When Pauline left, the center was Coach Sturgeons problem but Joyce brought joy to him and has been one of the best that Waco has ever had. She plays fair, hard, and puts her all into the game. She and Janet are wonders at passing. Janet Tinus QSide Center,-Waco feels secure in the position of side center and feels that she has as good as any one there, for that is janet's position. This is her last year on the team and her loss next year will be keenly felt. No matter whether we lose or win Janet is always smiling. MILDRED THOMAS fcuardj-Mildred has been a horror to all oppos- ing forwards, for they seldom see a guard in her class. She was one of the two girls left over from last year's team. She is in the game, in her place at all times. Mildred is one of the mainstays of the team. KATHERINE OSWALD fGuardJ-Although this is Katherine's first year on the team, she plays as if she were an old timer. Quick to see just where her opponents' weaknesses are, she makes a good guard. She is steady and fights hard. She stays in the game from start to finish, never giving up. EVA YOUNGBLOOD Clrorwardj--Eva is first substitute on the team, taking Gladys' place when she is unable to play. We are proud of Eva be- cause of her sterling work. She improves with each game. T. A., acknowledge this courtesy of the Daisy Chain Annual Staff. We are happy to recount at your request, our activities at dear 'Ole Hi this year. Our third year's work at the High School began in November under the most propitious condi- tions. and from that time up to the present time there has been a definite realization of a well planned constructive program. Our scholarship plan, our most notable piece of work, has made it possible for us to place four splendid and deserving students in Baylor University, and one other in a business college. This phase of work has great possibilities, for scholarships for next year. Recognizing the merits of such an undertaking and wishing to co-operate the Williams Dry Goods Company, the Rotarians, the Kiwanis and Toby's Business College have responded most generously. A similar fund, the ex-student loan fund, is ready to take care of and make possible for deserving youths, boys and girls to Hnish their high school education. The honor of creating this fund and establishing the precedent for graduating classes to help other boys and girls through high school ,goes to the mid-year graduating class of l922. The financial status is good, fourteen hundred and fifty-Gve dollars has been raised and subscribed this year to carry on the different phases of work. In the different departmental treasuries there still remains a ,nice sum of several hundred dollars for this year's program.. Several hundred dollars has been expended in improvements in the building and on the grounds. Classic stone benches, artistic urns, draperies, potted palms and shrubs have added much to the charm and beauty of interior and exterior. The improvements made in the Cafeteria have made it the prettiest school cafeteria in Texas. ln, awarding two handsome medals in Athletics. one to the best all-round. basket ball girl. and the other to the highest point lad on the track team, we are the Hrst and only organization to take cognizance of, and to encourage these sports. The Colonial party given February 22, complimenting the mid-year graduates, was the largest social aflair of the year. Within a lovely ante-bellum rose garden as a background the mid-year graduates and the Glee Club members in powdered hair, patch and costume passed in review presenting a beautiful picture. The membership drive this year even surpassed the results of the remarkable drive of last year which brought us the distinction of having the largest P. T. A. in Texas. This year's drive represents an increase of four hundred with an aggregate of I429 members. The success of this drive, which was due to the combined efforts of teacher, pupil and parent, assures us the State Victory Banner for another year along with two other membership banners-the District and City. ln appreciation for their interest and zeal in the work, life memberships in the National Associa- tion have been given to Miss Annie Forsgard and Mrs. R. M. Nichols. The interest and co-operation of this organization has extended into all phases of the school life, the Glee Club, the Orchestra, and the Radio Club. When a question within your knowledge is put before the class assume a downcast expressian and you will surely be called upon, thus giving you a chance to demonstrate your intellectualprowess. 3. Laugh heartily at the slightest resemblance of a joke pulled by one of the teachers. 4. Refrain from all shows during the week, as there is great danger of being seen by one of your teachers. 5. When some unheard of question is asked the class you must wave your hand frantically above your head. Ten to one you will not be called upon to answer. 6. Always wait until the night before examinations to borrow a book. You'll get there. THE MUSH CLUB BACHJNHS Linton Boggess ..... ...... IVI innie Rae Sullivan Alton Martin ..... ....,....
