Although beginning the season with only six letter men n : - back, Waco's aggregation of the past season made a record which has not been made for many years before. By losing two games, , they were out of the state championship race. All the team sup- 11577. - :pi cent-r 0 1 .Q , 4 ---., X. porters believe they could have defeated Houston Heights, the champions of South Texas, or Cleburne, champions of North Texas, had they but a chance to play them. There is one event that will always be remembered of the team of '20 in the many years to come, and that event is that they defeated Austin, the first time Waco has been able to defeat them in eight years. Waco not only had the honor of winning from Austin, but they did not allow the op- ponents to make a touchdown. Not even in the second half could the Austin boys, with tears in their eyes and remembering their eight consecutive years of victory, plunge through Waco's line: nor were they successful in making end runs or passing the ball. For the first time in the history of the institution the Waco eleven has defeated a Dallas team on a Dallas gridiron. Dutton, captain of the team, deserves special mention. He made a good captain and was as good a tackle as he was a captain. He took much interest in the team, and was always cheerful, doing what he thought was best. Waco is also fortunate in having as good a coach as any college in the state. Much of the success of the past season of football is due to Mr. Tyson. He picked the best players and carefully coached them to their success. We know it was the' team that did the work, but if they had not kept in training and listened to Mr. Tyson they could not have been what they were. Waco is expecting to carry off the state championship in football next season, and there is no reason why they should not. With the exception of Foster, White, Fason and Rutherford, who graduate this year, all the old team will be back, and all the new men getting on the team will be real football players. With Nash as captain, and with the excellent coaching of Mr. Tyson, I f l' w 1 , i if N 5 Ii .1 -w, 1 : 'WTS r w qv y 1 , B the prospects of all-state honors look promising. They were defeated by only 1-'if two High School teams, with one of which Waco played a return A: Z! game and decisively Wong the other was played on an outdoor 1 , auf 'X ,A court where the opponents had played all of their games, thus handicapping the locals who had played theirs indoors. For- -g --..,.-,,,..-- is tunately for the opponents, but unfortunately for the locals, there uk-49 . ' -5' was not a return game played. As was the case in football, the Waco quintette was headed by a captain who knew his business. Captain Meets was as lively as a jack rabbit, as active as a bird, and as sly as a fox when it came to playing basket ball. He was the individual star of every game and displayed during the entire season such a high class of ball and leadership that he won the enviable position of one of the best athletes in the history of the school. The Waco basket ball boys had the honor and the pleasure of being the first quintette to defeat Austin on the Austin court. This helped the rivalry between Waco and Austin, which has long existed, but not always so prominent as now, to grow, because Waco defeated them for' the first time on their own court. ln a few more years this rivalry may be so great that their games will be the classic of the year in field sports. It was this season that the local five defeated Bryan, the sole conquerors of Waco in the season of I9 l 8-l 9. The team of 1922 promises to be of championship caliber. Foster, the stationary guard of the past season, and who graduates this year, is the only regular who will not wear the colors next year. From the second team Tusa and Witsell graduate, both of whom probably would have been on the first team next year. With so many old players back, so much promising new material, such a coach as Mr. G. M. Smith, and with the increasing enthusiasm and support of the students, why can't Waco have the best team in the state? We are going to wish them the best of luck. 'l l l' Baseball Season of 1921-The baseball season is opening in a burst of glory, under the coaching of Mr. P. L. Tyson. The prospective state cham- pions are: Fason, Strickland, Hatter, Whatley, Sisco, Foster, Fall, Eichelberger, Boggess, Rutherford and Ewing. ACO is honored by having a girls' basket ball team that has played 7 'SJf wt- ' 1425 go twenty-four games, and has won every one. The girls have XJ picked on college teams this season, and have defeated every High School team that they have played, by an overwhelming Q majority. They defeated Palestine, champions of East Texas, and North Fort Worth, champions of North Texas, thus gaining the ,I W Q W high title of State Champions. The season of l9l8-l9 the Waco girls won the state champion- ship, but were defeated by a few college teams. This season Waco defeated every college which she lost to the season before and many others. The colleges which the local sextette handled easily are: Meridian College, San Marcos Baptist Academy 121, Southwestern University CZK, and Denton Normal. C. l. A. was conceded to be the college champion but refused to play Waco in Waco or Denton. Waco had a better score against South- western than C. l. A. did. - The first game with San Marcos was probably Waco's hardest: but the Denton Normal girls thought they had the best team in Texas, not including Waco, for they were the only ones who could ever get ahead of the locals. They were only ahead for about two minutes, and only by one small point. When the game ended Waco had left them in the shade. Not only High School but the whole of Waco is proud of the basket ball girls. With forwards such as Gladys Cartwright and Emma Lee Cluck, with centers such as Jack Mullins and Pauline Thomas, with guards such as Ethel Lawson and Faye Morgan, how could anybody expect to defeat them? Each not only played on the best team in Texas, but was the best individual player in the state. Faye Morgan was not only a good guard, but a good captain also. She was fully competent of the position she held. Mr. Sturgeon deserves much credit for the success of the girls. He devoted much time to them, and hda as much confidence in them as they had in him. He always noticed the errors they made and corrected them. l-le never did or mentioned anything that would tempt them to break train- ing. Not only did Mr. Sturgeon take much interest in basket ball. but in all other High School activities as well. Mr. Sturgeon said that this team was the best that Waco has had, but he expects the team next season to be equally as good. From the first team Emma Lee and Faye graduate: from the second Ruth Gaines and Mildred Shook graduate. The team mourns for the loss of these players and hopes to get others who are just as good. There will be many old players back, and the team supporters are confident of a third consecutive championship for the Waco girls. :za sfo 0:0 Girls' Tennis-Robye Mae Nichols won in singles at the district inter- scholastic meet, and with her partner, Martha Henshaw, also won in doubles. Some very interesting pro- grams have been rendered, at two of which the Genheimer and Darden were visitors. The Forum has had two debates this year. Oscar Dodson and Leonidas jaworski were defeated by Reagan on the question of Light Wines and Beer. The same team won unanimously from the jeffersonian Society at Houston, taking the affirmative side of the question, Resolved, That all foreign im- migration into the United States should be prohibited for a period of four years. This team is soon to debate the Rostra, taking the negative side of the same question. Mr. R. M. Andrews has worked hard with the boys and is be congratulated on the team he has put out. Another member of the Forum, A. B. johnson, secured a place on the interscholastic team which was defeated in the finals by Temple. The membership of the Forum will be practically unchanged, only four of the members graduating. Page Eighty-three Rostra Debaters KENYON FULKERSON CHESTER HARRISON ALLAN MCMURRAIN ROBERT WILSON ROY MONTGOMERY SAM LANHAM The Rostra has just finished what has probably been the most successful year in its history. Under the leadership of Mr. E.. D. johnson. it has suc- cessfully brushed from its path all the obstacles which have arisen. The Rostra has more than once this year justified its name as the leading society in High School. For the first time in the history of the High School, a literary society has adopted its own stationery. The senior members of the Rostra also acted as sponsors for the unfortunate freshmen, thus originating a cus- tom which, it is hoped, will be followed by all senior classes in the future. This year the Rostra has been represented by three debating teams. Kenyon Fulkerson and Chester Harrison broke even with Hubbard. Fulkerson was also a member of the interscholastic team. Chester Harrison and Roy Mont- gomery represented the Rostra at S. M. U., while Robert Wilson and Allan lVlclVlurrain will debate the Forum soon. The Rostra has very good prospects for the future and expects to become more glorious in the future. Page Eighty-four fe Boys' Glee Club 5 l will .Z . I I o Page One Hunrfrml Six sz., Mid-Year Class History IGH SCHOOL at last was the thought that filled each brain as the crowd of freshies gathered for the first time on that memorable morning in February of l9I 7. We girls were there with our hair X 555, in pigtails tied with colored ribbons, new squeaking shoes, and In E,-1 lanky legs encased in black ribbed stockings. The boys wore short pants, nondescript neckties and clumsy shoes, while their hands looked all for the world as though they had just put up a stove. Assembled in the lower study hall, Professor Genheimer in a brusque manner proceeded to point out to us the way we should go. Upstairs and downstairs like goosy-ganders we surely did wander to Gnd our notch. As you remember, Mrs. Butler was a most efficient teacher to have in the study hall, for even with her back towards us and at the opposite end of the hall, she knew when we were talking and would call .out the name of the culprit. Mr. Puckett with his deep set eyes and heavy eyebrows would by simply looking at us, cause us to feel like saying, 'iPlease, mister, l clidn't do a thing. Lunch, remember how hungry we were? As Joel Chandler Harris so aptly put it, Vat that age we were more craw than meat. ln line we would have to stand until the soup and chile were cold and all the ice cream gone. then take what we could get. One morning Mr. Genheimer, listening in disgust to the few squeaky notes mumbled out when we were asked to sing America and The Star Spangled Banner in assembly, forthwith gave instructions that both songs were to be memorized. As those were the days when the air was full of patriotic songs we soon had all of them on the end of our tongue. All during our Sophomore and Junior Years we looked with envy on the Seniors for they seemed to be having most of the fun. Not satisfied with leasing us they even brought in the teachers. Miss Leslie one day advancing in the study hall was reminded of the martial spirit that caused every boys' feet in the balcony to keep time with hers, and the louder the noise got the Hmaddern Miss Leslie got-and the more we laughed. Mr. Biesele kept them in for thirty minutes trying to get them to keep quiet for one minute but had to give it up as a bad job. During those two years in the middle of our High School career, Mr. Tyson quite often astonished us with some mighty facts. For instance, if we could smell as well as an ant, according to our size, we could smell dinner cooking in New York. Who can forget Miss Annie and Miss Nellie drilling us in English and History? They had the faculty of getting out of us every spark of knowledge we possessed on either subject. And we are sure that none can forget how Mr. Sturgeon had us mix all kinds of vile compounds that caused everyone in the school to hold their nose. After making those hithertofore unheard of substances we had to write all about it, every day. Then a SENIOR after three years of work and play, but being a Senior meant more than ulording it over the poor fish and playing pranks on the teachers. We realized that to make good it was WORK! WORK! ln the end we felt as though we had accomplished something worth while with just enough of fun mixed in to relieve the monotony. Now all who are aspir- ing to become Seniors take our advice and do not leave too much to be finished during the last year, or you may expire trying to get up your several Term Themes with a speech, poem, or class play thrown in. 5 Page O c 1 ll 1 Seven S W B 2 5 ,Q '62, 46' ' 43125 I 9 i k ,f' Jrif Q I t June Class History K2 g V OUR YEARS! Why we, the Senior Class, should begin to feel quite aged since the day we entered Waco Hi in l9l 7, as shy, timid little 8B's. Although very quiet, we thought we knew every- gtg, thing, as we had started to High School. By the second year, when we really had learned something, we agreed with all, that we knew very little our first year, and were 515' i willing to learn more. We felt more at home and in our hearts, a spot for Waco Hi was beginning to grow, as we took an in- terest in the school life, the various clubs and societies. Our junior year was one of hard work and study which prepared us for the eleventh grade. The teachers, although our friends, did not object, in the least, to filling up our leisure time, such as we had, with innumerable tests, collateral reading, themes, and the like. Alas! It has come-our last year. We expected it to be a year of only good time, but we were disappointed, as we had to study more and more each day. We also had most enjoyable parties, picnics and banquets. As we are about to start out into the world, we look back over our school life, back to our Freshman days, when our highest ambition was to Hnish school, but our love and respect for Waco High School, its teachers, and our class- mates has proven to be far greater than the disappointments, tests and themes and graduating. We only think of what we have gained. f If OFFICERS OF THE SUMMER CLASS l92I Lr.lcHi.us SHEPPARD ........... A .,.............. Presidenl KATHRYN KINCANNON . ..... The best parts of all known methods of prophecy have been employed in making this forecast, and while no super- natural power is claimed, the author believes that the future may be as readily foretold, in a pragmatic way, as may Texas weather. ' ASTROLOGY We will hrst consult the stars. lt is a strange fact that the members of the class born in january have many similar characteristics. Bitter-sweet were her furtive tears, l For pride and hope were mixed with fears. Her baby had gone from her fond embrace To the Half-way-house, alone to face The teacher, the lesson, the study, the rule g For baby, her baby, had gone to school. That was the autumn of 1909, That woman was your mother and mine. First we had numbers, reading, writing, fAnd frequently the boys had fightingj, Geography, phonics and history, Then proudly to Grammar School went we. Lessons were harder and longer, too, And sometimes we got very blue, As in our dreams our guiding star- Entering High -seemed very far. But all things come as sure as fate To those who work as well as wait. At last the coveted time drew nigh- Diploma from Grammar and entrance to High, We felt so grand in the Study Hall, Were the best of rooters in the games of ball, And we were proud to just stand by And yell for the winners of dear old High, And pay our good coin for lockers and lunch To that pert body-the Sophomore bunch. 'Twas all in the game, and we took it like men, Then handed it back to the Fishes again N o keeping us down, for our goal was the top, And until we reached it we never would stop. 'Twas four years of struggle and happiness, too! God bless our dear teachers, so faithful and true! How the years have flown since that autumn day, Now mother's hair is streaked with gray It I But she's watching still, with a tear in her, eye, r And if you ask her to tell you why- , . g She'll say, My child alone enters life's school, To learn its lessons and keep its rule. So, though we feel proud of the honors we've won We know that our progress is only begun. And when the grades in Life's School shall unfold May we find our names on the honor roll.
