Hi! It ' s me! Hi there - how are you? Fantastic. I just finished my last application. So, let ' s go do something. Can you come over? I really can ' t ... I still have two to go. This is such a pain - I can ' t believe that you ' re finished . . . Hey! We won! Isn ' t that awesome? “You serious? They ' re ranked third in the state! So what! We killed them. Central Mass Champs right here - for the third time. “Who do you have to beat to win states? I don ' t know, probably the same as last year. You might ever do that! “Yeah - we might ... didn ' t you hear? He asked her out, finally “Are you serious? Yes, isn ' t that incredible? “Omigosh - what did he say? What did she say? Tell me all the details ... . . . alright, it ' s all set. I got the car. You have the directions, right? Yeah, he just gave them to me a minute ago. And if they are wrong again, we ' ll stop at that gas station. Okay - I ' ll pick you up around six. The concert is supposed to start around 7;30, but I heard that it started late last night ... “ . . . this morning we ' d like to start off the announcements with a few words of congratulations . . . Okay, do you want the good news or the bad news first. The good news: the ' 87 Yearbook is finally done! 4 Opening

6 You are sitting at a desk, surrounded by twenty other students who are bent over their exams. You can hear the scratching of pencil on paper, the sighs of frustration, the rocking of an unbalanced chair. Your eyes wander onto the desk top in front of you. The Clock has been carved in by a black pen, and an intricate geometric pattern has been started in the corner. Your eyes wander back to your paper, and with a start you realize it is only half-completed. Your feet begin to tap impatiently and you try to concentrate . . . There are all kinds of problems you must encounter in high school, it seems. From challenging you body ' s capabilities to challenging your mind ' s proficiency, quite a bit of energy and hard work is necessary to excel. What else does it take? Here are some words we thought appropriate: Ambition, amelioration (look it up), and amiability; Balance, bargaining, and bearing it; Calmness, a calendar, and concentration; Decisions, dependability, and desire (I); Earnestness, ease, and eating; Fascination, flirting, and fun; Gangs, glory, and greenbacks; Hazards, hugs, and hypothetical situations; Impressions, improvement, and independence . . . And studying, snowboarding, scoring, and sleeping (see above).
