THINK POSITIVELY! If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think that you dare not, you don’t If you’d like to win, but you think you can’ It’s almost certain you won’t. If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost. For out in the world you’ll find success begins with a fellow’s will. It’s all in the state of mind. If you think you are outclassed, you are. You’ve go to think high to rise. You’ve got to be sure of yourself before you can ever win a prize. Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later, the man who wins, is the man who thinks he can. things we’ve said and done oj nvle s ei iAiew n r 0Wf KT ■ : ;•= o • . - . . Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime 3 m m I W: wm and someday we’ll remember. . . ...... . II 15 Superintendent’s Office Message to the Class of 1985: This message is being written following several days spent with Amish friends in Ohio, including a morning’s visit in an Amish one-room school and three days observing a family (three generations worth) prepare for a wedding. The most impressive aspect of the Amish for me was the strong sense of community, the standards set by it, the support given by it, especially in times of need, and the obligation which each family accepts for training each young person in a vocational area and setting him or her up in an occupation or household. What message is there in all of this for us? I think that there is a message which runs counter to the commonly heard “I want to make it on my own.” Possibly this ‘‘making it on one’s own” is a reaction to overprotective or manipulative parents. Sometimes it is necessary, when there is no support coming from family or friends. But how silly it is to confuse the desire to achieve self-sufficiency with knowing it all, to refuse advice and assistance when offered by someone who knows our chosen occupation better than we. The message is: accept advice and assistance with your career and life, and even ask for it. Thousands of successful careers have been moved forward by the person’s having a mentor, a more experienced person in the field, who takes an interest in a hard-working junior, and acts not only as teacher, but as agent to further the junior’s advancement. Yes it is admirable to go it alone, but i t is not necessary in many cases. May I suggest that you consider abandoning some of those macho instincts and looking around for a person of quality and accomplishment so you don’t have to “reinvent the wheel.” Whatever your route, our best wishes follow you along your life’s path. Dr. Edward P. Yaglou Superintendent PETER FARRELLY ASS T SUPERINTENDENT WILLIAM C. JORDEN BUSINESS MANAGER FORREST R. GILMORE, JR. DIR. OF SPECIAL ED. Administration Dear Members of the Class of 1985: I am writing this letter for the first publication deadline of your yearbook which is only one quarter of the way through your senior year at Wachusett. This act reminds me of how transient and ordered most of life really is. And this would seem to be a good thing given the less frequent but tumultous events that can occur in the life of an individual or of a country or even of the world. The common experience of high school — even with all the differences of performance and accomplishments — is very important to all of us. I wouldn’t trade in the memories of my high school years — like yours spent at Wachusett — for anything! Even more than twenty-five years out my memory is often flooded with recollections of friendships and of teachers; of good times with my family and the traumas and tribulations of my adolescence. It was a special time for me and I hope it was a special time for you. As you read this your graduation ceremonies will be close at hand and the future will stretch out for you and your classmates in many directions. It is my hope that Wachusett has had some part in preparing you for what lies ahead and that you will remember those — your family, friends, and teachers — who have had a positive impact on your life. I think of Wachusett as a family and 1 wish for each of you to keep us somewhere in your memory as you pursue whatever goals or ambitions that burn in your hearts. We hope to establish a formal Alumni Association in the near future and I hope you will join. My fervent prayer for each of you is that you will pursue your dreams and no matter what life has to offer you that you will face it with truth, honesty, and love. Keep in touch, Harold M. Second, to all Sophomores — The privilege of leaving the realm of “The Dungeon ” and becoming a “Real member of the Wachusett student body. Third, to all Juniors — The right to step out to your own prom, the thrill of becoming dignified (?) upperclassmen, and the privilege of sitting behind the wheel — LEGALLY. Fourth, to the faculty — Our kindest appreciation for the help you have given us while we sojourned at Wachusett. Fifth, to Mr. Ljungberg — Our gratitude for the inspiration you were to us and may you have all the happiness in the world for the future. Sixth, to Mr. Lane — We give you our highest esteem and gratitude for all your forbearance and kindness. Seventh — We do hereby bequeath our possessions and peculiarities in item as follows: I, Lori Aguiar, leave to the students of Wachusett all of my fruitloops, safety pins, and creative jewelry. I, Diana Alty, leave my John his own locker in the Senior corridor, and Mr. Corriveau the “Civil War!” I, Margaret Barrett, leave my crutches to Miss Hawkins, French Horn to Mr. Grimo, polyester uniform to Mrs. Reidy, and love to someone left nameless. I, Crisse Bishop, had something to leave, but I forgot what it was. We, Diana Bratt and Kate Conway, leave “Wee-um-bum-baway” destined to become the Wachusett Alma Mater. I, Jean Brett, leave my bass to Mr. Grimo, who will hopefully find someone else to lug it around, tune it, and not be heard in Band. I, Darlene Charland, being of semi-sound mind leave: to M. Powers — quelques mots francais, to the school — my fond memories, and to all Freshmen — a 20-pack of Chicken McNuggets. !, Sandy Czajkowski, leave early to avoid being trampled by the crowd. See you all at the reunion! Later Ferg! It’s been real guys! I, Susan Czajkowski, leave looking less and less like my twin sister every day, but some things never change. I, Jennifer L. D’Amico, leave my strawberry socks to Kristine Cheetham, and my dreams to Wendy Battles. I, Tabitha D’Auteuil, leave to become Mrs. Richard Merchant Jr. , Jeanne Ferguson, leave all my good memories and friends my love. I also leave the rest of the class luck and good fortune for the future. I, Lisa Fournier, graciously leave all of my “funny-looking” clothes (the pants with the vertical stripes) to my one and only idol, Dave T. (Fatty) I, Linda C. Gonyea, leave to Mr. Lengas an extra scoop of ice cream that his mother deprived him of. I, Chris Grace, leave New York I’ll be there. Q Ml . •• QUM t)ftftu5TR.O n EXCHANGE STUDENTS DITTE CLASE A lot of people ask me why I wanted to come to America to be an exchange student. Well, in the beginning 1 wasn’t sure why. Of course 1 wanted to improve my English and learn more about American life. But after spending over half a year here, I realize how much more it has meant to me. Being an exchange student makes you more independent. It was hard in the beginning. I felt all alone. 1 didn’t have my mother and father or brother to talk to. The first couple of months were terrible, and I must have cried more than I ' ve done in my whole life. But once 1 got to know people and the feeling of being at home here, it has been terrific. And I just don’t want to think about the day I’m going home. But it has been the best thing I’ve ever done and I encourage everyone who’s thinking about going to a foreign country to do it. Being an American for one year has been wonderful. MARTA DELORENZO I’m Marta from Madrid (Spain). I came here on August 18.1 spent three days in New Jersey and New York, everything was great, but I was despondent when I saw New York. I thought it was much better than it actually is. This country is very different than my homeland: people, schools, kind of life, etc. I found this country more strict than Spain is. People can’t drink alcohol, go to a bar or a disco if they are not 21 or older. The hours to be home at night are very strict. In the school you need a pass for everything and you have to call the teachers by their last names. In Spain, after school we bring our books home and then we go with our friends to the nearest bar or another place, but we don’t return home until ten o’clock or ten thirty because we have supper at that time. We don’t have homework, it is against the law. That is a new law, which began this year (I miss it). At the beginning I had trouble adjusting myself here and now I think I’ll have trouble adjusting myself to Spanish life, but only for the first two days. I think America is a wonderful country, but I can’t compare it to Spain. Ther’re two very different countries. MARIE HARRYSSON My trip over here was really a journey of experience. The group I was going with left Sweden August 13 after we had spent three days in Stockholm to learn a little about America. We landed in London after about a two hour flight. There a bus took us to another airport from which we later left for New York. There we had to go through the customs with our suitcases (we were only allowed to bring two each, for a whole year). That was something that we all had been nervous of because the leaders had told us about the custom agents — how they treat your suitcases, but we all came through it without having to open our suitcases. One of my suitcases got lost on the way to London so I had only one to carry around during the long wait for the plane to New York. Arrived in the United States. Everyone was tired and the heat didn’t make it better. My suitcase didn’t show up here either, so we had to leave without it to catch the next plane, this time to Boston. There were only three of us who were going there and we had to take a taxi to another airport. But the cabdriver only allowed three in the car, so the two girls and the leader took one and disappeared. A guy, who was going to Chicago, and I took another. None of us knew which airport we should go to, but we finally found it after a lot of driving. The leader had to get the “Chicago guy’’ to his airport so he left us there alone to find our way to the right plane. After a lot of trouble and delays, the plane finally went down for landing in Boston. I was kind of terrified but 1 found out on the airplane that I had no reason to because a 98 great family was waiting for me down there and 1 had the enormous luck to be part of them for a whole wonderful year. PETER GILLBRANT There are a lot of differences between Sweden and America One is that football is such a big sport in America and in Sweden it is non existent. We have something similar called rugby, but nc many people play it. My first real live football game is one experience I will never forget. The cheerleaders, dressed in short skirts with “what you call them” in their hands, are sometimes more fun to watch than the game. Suddenly there comes a roar from the crowd and in run the players. I guess football must be one sport you need a lot of players for because I have never seen so many players on one team before. They kind of look like ice hockey players with all their protection they are wearing. I found out the reason why after the game started. What happens after the kickoff is very strange to many Europeans because as football is to America, soccer is to Europe. In soccer ihe players try to spread out the play, but in football there are only a few players that run free. The rest of the players are in a big pile in the middle of the field. The football works almost like a magnet, everybody is drawn to it. I thought it was a fun sport to watch and 1 guess a lot of Americans think the same because you have to pay over one million dollars for one minute of commercial during the Super Bowl. KARL HOVLAND TV, highways, skyscrapers, yellow school buses, big cities . . . these are some of the differences between Norway and the US, but the biggest difference is the language. Not that there’s anything wrong with English, but I just happened to grow up in a place where we speak another language so I have difficulty pronouncing some English sounds. Even though many things are different, many things are alike. The people are the same and many of the same needs. We listen to the same kind of music and watch similar and often the same movies and tv series. In many ways Americans are very conservative as in clothing, parental influence, swimming suits, and values in general. I once spoke to a girl from China, 1 felt like I came from next door the US because over there it’s really different. We hardly have anything in common with the Chinese. Depending upon what you are comparing, America is very different or very alike Norway. 99 “Lives of the SUPERIOR AND FAMOUS” magazine would like to present this year’s very exclusive group of students: THE SENIORS!! I glance up and down the beach, noticing the other strangers, who have come to cherish these few moments of timeless peace. Some walk along the water, hoping to find a shell or some other remnant of the sea. Others sit as I do, enjoying the serenity of the waves as they submerge the rocks and creep up the beach. We are all alone, for those that enjoy the beauty of the sea, or the brilliance of a clear, starry sky, are surprisingly few. We are thankful for this gift of nature, for it reminds us that other things are not so freely given, as those which God has given for us to share. The tie against Notre Dame put the finishing touches on an undefeated season. The ’84 season was to be one of rebuilding and the team found themselves confronted with living up to the image of last year’s fantastic field hockey team. But they put in tremendous effort, con¬ sistently matching the previous year’s status and rising a step beyond to the District Championship. “This year was a rebuilding one. The kids were great! They believed in themselves as individual players and as a team. For a young team, they accomplished so much — C.M.C. League and district champs. The overall season record was 16-1-2. With well prepared and talented seniors Bill Power, Brian Lederer, Tony Mongiat, and Doug Blackbourne, Coach Lewis looked forward to a strong balanced attack combining passing and run¬ ning. Juniors Tom Fatcheric and Mike Shipley would help add to the stable seniors to take some of the pressure off. Area newspapers even tagged the Moun¬ taineers as the “spoilers” of the season who would “trample over all others.” Yet the tables turned to everyone’s surprise and the Mountaineers lost or tied every game with the exception of one. However, that one game opened everyone’s eyes to how good the Mountaineers really were when they upset unbeaten Burncoat, 18-14. The Moun¬ taineers ended their season 1-8-1 yet the ex¬ perience each individual player gained in his tremendous effort will provide an even stronger base to begin on in seasons to come. That was the primary goal of this year’s boys’ Frosh basketball team; and, as one might expect of young players just beginning their high school careers, the drive to attain respectability does not always run smoothly. After splitting the first 4 games in unspectacular fashion, the prospect of defeating perennial powerhouse St. John’s seemed bleak. However, a starting five of Paul Rauker, Jeff Norcross, Dave Cornacchioli, Bobby Dunham, and Tim Walsh took quick control of the game and built a lead which reached over 20 points before finally settling for a highly satisfying 46 to 30 victory. In addition to the starters, Bob Gramling and Chris Carey played well for WRHS. Though the team again split the next 4 games, the highlight proved to be a tough 2 point loss at Leominster. The spirited play of reserves John Lufkin, Wayne Chad- bourne, Jeff Hazelwood, Ben Paharik, Jon Raynor, and Rick Cranford mounted a furious rally that nearly wiped out a 15 point third quarter deficit! Following a 34 point blow out of St. Peter-Marian came a rematch with St. John’s. Again the yearling Mountaineers showed their superiority in easily defeating the Pioneers 55 to 31. All 15 team members had a hand in producing a se¬ cond successive win over their usually potent rivals. For the remainder of the season the team went on a rollercoaster ride which produced 4 wins and 4 losses. In the season finale the entire squad saw plenty of action in drubbing Tantasqua 58 to 34. The Var¬ sity Girls’ Gymnastics team was forced to begin their season with the absence of two strong teammates, Nikki Cook and Laurie O’Hearn. Many of the team members were doubtful of a season that would be able to boast such a record as the previous years held. However, Coach Claire Madelle strongly felt that the potential in the remaining team members could make up a large part of the dif¬ ference. Working through strenuous practices, the team concentrated on more difficult moves and cleaner routines. The first meet, however, was a disappointing loss by 1.1 to a strong Algonquin High. As the season progressed the girls improved and again had to suffer the loss of two more strong competitors Diana Bratt and Catherine English. The team worked even harder and the remaining meets brought nine wins and only one loss. The girls found themselves on their way, to everyone’s surprise, to the North Sectional Finals. Rochelle Perry, Erin O’Connor, and Deb Osborne were the high scorers throughout the season with outstanding performances. Other strong competitors were: Crisse Bishop, Kate Conway, Lisa Juliano, Katie Sedgwick, Jodi O’Rourke, Lisa Taylor, Cathy Miller, Emily Hair, and Sandy Cjaikowsky. Even with so much against them, the Varsity Girls’ Gymnastics team proved that the strength was still there and that they wouldn’t be defeated. 176 Algonquin Medway Marlboro St. Peter-Marian Leominster Westboro Grafton Auburn Shrewsbury St. Bernard’s St. Peter-Marian St. John’s Marlboro Algonquin St. John’s Auburn Leominster St. Bernard’s Westboro Shrewsbury 3 1 5 7 2 5 2 2 0 2 5 5 5 0 2 1 HOCKEY Cn N 4 cn Front, L R: R. After a slow start we really came on in mid-season to play some exceptional hockey. But we fell just short of quali¬ fying for District competition. The highlight of the season came when we knocked off a powerful St. John’s team late in the season, 3 to 2. With numerous varsity players returning next year and several junior varsity players showing potential, the outlook for the future Mountaineer team seems promising.” — Captain Eric Gardula 179 JUNIOR VARSITY Front, L-R: C. Throughout the season, strong efforts from upperclassmen John Monks, Chuck Miller, Tom Fatcheric and Kevin Olson provided a boost for less experienced freshmen and sophmores. A definite im¬ provement was evident in the perfor¬ mances of many of the underclassmen as the season progressed. There was room for improvement in all as exemplified by Tom Fatcheric’s school record tie in the 50 yard dash at 5.8 seconds. 182 WRHS 73 43 55 79 84 68 SOUTH HIGH 5 MARLBORO 43 DOHERTY 29 BURNCOAT‘ 5 NORTH HIGH 0 ALGONQUIN 16 SHREWSBURY 78 GIRLS’ TRACK ' h Front, L-R: K. Led by senior co-captains Lynn Narcisi and Lee Bluemel, the Wachusett team was defeated only once, by a strong op¬ posing Shrewsbury team. In addition to their proud record, the girls are responsible for several new school records. Freshman Shelby Mackie broke the standing time with a 7.4 second 50 yard hurdle time. Sophomore Nicole Parent’s time of 3:04.0 in the 1000 yard run was good enough to bump out the previous record. Finally, Lynn Narcisi’s outstanding time of 5:45.4 in the mile run also set a new record. Overall the team ended their season triumphantly as the second team in the Con¬ ference Meet with 52 points. 186 CHEERLEADERS FOOTBALL Front, L R: Capt.
