Being in a minority, even a minority of one, did not make you mad. There was truth and there was untruth, and if you clung to the truth even against the whole world, you were not mad. George Orwell, 1984 WflCHUSITT REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 140! MAIN STRUT HOLDIN- MASSACHUSETTS 01520 Mrs. Nelson, We would like to express our deepest gratitude for the years of dedication and support you have given us. Your encouragement has carried us from freshman feebleness through senior superiority. Thank you for the devotion and caring which helped us to grow as in¬ dividuals and together as a class. Sincerely, The Class of 1984 The Class of 1984, the yearbook staff especially, would like to extend a special thank you to a very special teacher and advisor, Mr. Lengas. We all know him as a cheerful, energetic member of the Wachusett staff. However, to the yearbook staff, he has always been especially important. Whether offering advice to shaky editors, or supplying pizza to a hard¬ working crew, Mr. Lengas is a constant source of support. We will never forget the effort and personal sacrifice that this exceptional man invested in Wachusett student activities. 3 Some forever, not for better 6 7 With lovers and friends 9 I still can recall 10 in mEm or i urn JOHN A. CUTLER marc v. dupont CASSANDRA L CAMP yy ATS CLASS OF ion Some are dead and some are living 11 Though I know I’ll never lose affection 13 For people and things 14 Ml Message to the Class of 1984: I would wish three things for you in the years ahead. First, as you leave Wachusett — for further schooling or not — you will (like it or not) continue your education. Your education takes place any time you leave yourself open to new insight, curiosity, new friends, new places and experiences, interesting conversation, sermons and lectures and debates, the chance to talk at length to an older person who not only recounts history but reflects upon the experience of living. My second wish for you would be that you are able to achieve the satisfaction and security of a lasting relationship, and that if you decide to have children, that you are able to provide them with the family’s love and security which many of our kids are missing today. Such a lasting relationship is made, not by self-centeredness, not even by 50- 50 sharing, but by each party’s giving freely, probably each feeling that they are giving more than they receive. I wish for you the lasting satisfactions which slowly come from having been self-less, from giving. And lastly, less in your personal interest than in the society’s I should wish that you be a contributing citizen, again giving what to you will appear to be more than you receive. Good communities don’t exist simply because people wanting good things come there to consume. The people must contribute, or the good slips away. Continue your education whether you go to school or not; make careful, serious, lasting personal commitments; and be a contributor to your community. “1984” is here, but you still make the difference. Edward P. Yaglou DR. EDWARD YAGLOU, Superintendent WILLIAM JORDAN Director of Special Ed. PETER FARRELLY Assistant Superintendent 20 Ihillnll Dear Members of the Class of 1984, It is always a pleasure to be even a small part of a senior class year¬ book. Within the pages of your yearbook are seeds of memories that will take root and become even more important to you as the years go by. High school is a pivotal time for most of us — a time of close friendships, of having to make more decisions about our future than we ever have before, of growing to understand our parents more clearly than we ever have before while learning simultaneously to grow as in¬ dividuals; of good times and bad times that often go hand in hand with our adolescent years. It is a time of great happiness and, almost in¬ evitably, great sadness. For in growing as a class we are learning to grow as individuals and at the end of the high school years there is a break with our past that is unequaled during the remaining years of our lives. So cherish your memories and use this book to turn back the pages to what I hope has been, overall, an enjoyable four years at Wachusett. Use what you have learned to make your dreams a reality and don’t ever forget the debt you owe to others — your parents, friends, and teachers. Return their kindnesses to others as you travel life’s path and the rewards will be great. My best to each of you in whatever you hope to become. Keep in touch, Harold M. Louvain-la-Neuve, a French-speaking city (there is no such language as Belgian!) 20 miles from Brussels, is where Axel lives, along with a fifteen year old brother and a ten year old sister. He’s presently staying with the l Van Hoven family of Holden and is active in tennis, windsurfing and squash. After graduating from high school, Axel hopes to attend the University of Brussels, and become a commercial engineer or marketing specialist. In America, Axel says, food doesn’t have the variety found in Belgium, but the New Wave music is really great. . . What a dancer! i 108 Gunilla Nilsson has been to Bermuda, New York City, New Hampshire, Newport, and Boston, but the tame town of Holden seems to suit her just fine. A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Gunilla left behind her parents, brother, friends, and — alas! — Swedish food, to try a taste of life in America! Her course load is heavy, as she hopes to pursue a career in engineering, (although we know she could make it as a comedienne), but Gunilla finds time for soccer, skiing, badminton, and windsurf¬ ing. Her favorite American food is tacos, but in Sweden it is easier to spot a salad restaurant than a taco stand. Another specialty, she claims, is blood pudding (?!) Gunilla enjoys living with the Bishop family of Holden and hopes to visit America again in the future. 109 For Ariel Maldonado, coming to the U.S. meant see¬ ing snow for the first time. He’s from Cali, a city larger than Boston that occupies a valley in southwestern Co¬ lombia. Temporarily leaving his fourteen year old brother and eleven year old sister, Ariel has joined the Drinon family of Holden. Besides trying out skiing and ice skating, Ariel has spent his time reading, practicing sports, and drawing landscapes. The greatest dif¬ ferences between life in New England and life in Colom¬ bia, according to Ariel, exist in school and in the workplace. In Cali, girls and boys don’t attend classes together! Ariel seems to have handled the change rather well . . . The kids in a class all take the same thirteen courses, and call teachers by their first names. Colombia also has a more male-oriented society, with fewer work¬ ing women. Almost every home has a live-in maid, but Ariel says the maid is more like a friend than a servant. no Anne Marie Grunditz misses her home in Sweden, where she can walk out the back door right into the woods. Although her hometown of Kungaw, in the southwest of the country, is only twenty minutes from the second largest city in Sweden, Anne Marie’s house borders directly on a huge forest. Such is not the case at the home of her aunt and uncle, the Kristiansons, with whom she is residing. Still, Anne Marie really likes Holden, and finds the people friendlier here than she ex¬ pected. A major difference between the U.S. and Sweden has to do with school. Anne Marie points out that in Kungaw, they have an open campus and a dif¬ ferent schedule each day with twelve subjects in all. Classes are tougher, and teachers are called by their first names. There are more extracurricular activities here at Wachusett, and Anne Marie is involved in quite a few — soccer club, the gymnastics team, and dance club. When she returns to Sweden, her parents, and her two sisters, (if she can force herself to leave the U.S. . . .) she will have to take her senior year over again. After that, Anne Marie plans to continue her studies and to do some more traveling. Swedish chocolate may be better than Snickers bars, but American people are friendlier and more talkative, says Kristian Magnusson. He left Stockholm, his parents, and a sister to join the Vacin family in Holden, i Kristian likes speaking English and having a wide choice of courses at Wachusett .. . besides, school is easier here than in Sweden! Although he misses Dajm, tennis matches on T.V., and the public transportation system, Kristian occupies himself with sports, his favorites being tennis, skiing, swimming, and basketball. What a break for the boys’ tennis team! Next year, he plans to major in Economics, and is aiming for a career in Economics, English, or Commercial Art. “I wouldn’t mind coming back one day to spend a few more years here . . .” says Kristian, “I know I will.” 112 JASON J. As a brother — he was like no other. Giving and sharing, and always caring. As a friend — his heart was always open. Love to him was much more than just a word spoken. Considerate, kind — always looking on the bright side. Even, when life was not handing him a smooth ride. Finding fun in daily living — always smiling and forgiving. Brrnnggg! May 30, 1996 “Hey, will someone answer the videophone!” Brrnng! Brrnnnggg! “Hello. Yes, as you can see, this is Harold Lane speaking!” Mr. Lane answered irritably, just home from a long, two-fire-drill, arena day at Wachusett. The principal really has it rough. He was soon cheered, however, by his conversation with Martha Strock, a 1984 Wachusett graduate who was now an intergalactic diplomat and special ambassador to the planet Ttesuhcaw. “How’s Gary” she asked, “I heard he recently bought the Patriots.” K it f ■on 5(1 “Yes, he made a good deal; they might even break .500 this season. But what’s the real reason you’re calling, Martha?” Martha then explained to him that because of his outstanding citizenship she had recommended him to give the Ttesuhcawian ambassador a tour of Boston to see the ins and outs of Terrestrial Society. Needless to say, Mr. Lane agreed. “By the way, Martha,” he inquired, “have you heard anything about Chrys Demetry lately? I read that she was lost in the Appalachian Trail.” ‘Didn’t you hear?” responded Martha, “She wasn’t actually lost, she made her own trail.’ Mr. Lane hung up the videophone, once again awed by the brilliance and success of the famous Class of ’84. The next morning Mr. Lane arrived at Logan Airport where he bumped into Keli Andrysiak who was catching a shuttle to Australia to Ur study the life cycle of the platypus. In the lobby he also met John Giasi and his six children who he planned to teach to fly his helicopter. Mr. Lane got a ride to his hotel with Wendy Moylan who was going by in her Jaguar to bring groceries to famished Lynne Dowd. At the hotel, Mr. Lane was introduced to the Ttesuhcawian ambassador. ‘Hello, I’m Hal Lane, it’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. . . .?” “No, GTE. I am the test tube son of ET and Princess Leia, but I was abandoned here because my mother was taken away by force and ET went home.” 4 144 “Oh, gee, that’s too bad.” “No, GTE.” This confusion was interrupted when the owner of the hotel, Lisa Beauregard , approached the pair. Lisa, who skied in the 1988 Winter Olympics with co-graduate Kristian Magnusson, gave Mr. Lane two free tickets to the summer games that were being held in Boston that year. The hotel was almost all booked up due to a lawyers’ convention that was being held there. At the convention were the President of the Association, Todd Hammond, Jen Dodge (not far enough from Holden), Joyce Hunt, and Wendy Wesby (too far from horseback riding), Kris Johnson, Missie Drinon, and Heidi Drelinger. After unpacking, Mr. Lane and GTE set right off for the stadium. They shared a taxi with Lakshman Subrahmanyan who was returning home from the hospital. He had just had a corrective nose operation performed by Dr. Jocelyn Stoddard, a renowned plastic surgeon, and was eager to get back to teaching Theoretical Mathematics. Upon getting out at the stadium, they heard the sirens of an ambulance in the background, but they took no notice. Little did they know that in that ambulance was Julie Kramer who was being taken to the hospital for mild injuries after being sat on by her 1.23 million cats. Mike Horrigan had been called to the scene and took dramatic pictures of the accident. En route to their seats, Mr. Lane and GTE walked by the press box where they met John Cole, a famous sportswriter and his colleague, Beth Brenner. Beth had first made a name for herself with an exclusive interview wi th Scooby Doo. She was accompanied by Heather Martin and Sonja Gonzalez, the latter on a sojourn from Switzerland where she owns a cheese fondue factory. Finally at their seats, Mr. Lane and GTE relaxed and watched the final round of Olympic field hockey. On the U.S. Team were many former Wachusett players, Kathy Kenney (a retired American Beauty), Wendy Stoddard, Lisa Emond, Shannon Murphy, Jill Lepore, Amy Varnum, Jenny Finneran, Carolyn Greis, Sarah Korjeff, and . . . “Wow, Kathy Hosey just made a great play! Very tricky, Hose!” exclaimed Mr. Lane. GTE was very impressed with the game, but he couldn’t understand why people would want to run for all that time. “Running is a terrestrial pastime, Mr. GTE,” pitched in Monique Lussier sitting in the next seat by Faith Haines, “Since the coefficient of friction is so high on the earth’s surface, running is a real challenge. As a matter of fact, just last year Wendy Greene nearly defied the gravitational constant when she broke the Boston Marathon record.” That same night, Mr. Lane and GTE went out to dinner at a haute cuisine restaurant co-owned by Jimmy Quill and Carrie-Sue Shields. The cook, Doug Dillon, was one of the “Great Chefs of Europe,” but what happened to him? During the evening they enjoyed the music of Jeff Arnold’s band, especially Pat Bobkowski’s trumpet playing. Sitting at a nearby table were all the big-wigs (no pun intended) of modern cosmetology; Tracey Ordung, Sheila Richard, Roe Mathieu, and Tammi-Jean Sullivan. While their waitress Laurie Milstead was putting in their order, Mr. Lane took GTE up to the bar. They walked by Debbie Price playing pool with Diane Morin and sat next to Jeff Sylvia who was trying to pick up girls. The news was on the TV over the bar. Regina Stillings and Polly Benjamin, the anchor team for Channel 4, went over the headlines. “Tammi Mack. Empress of Tibet, has just arrived in Washington with her advisor, Brian Long, seen here eating an apple. To you, Polly.” “Former Massachusetts resident Melissa Favreault was today awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the role she played in global disarmament. We’ll be back after this word from our sponsor.” Beth Danico then flashed on the screen holding an American Express Card. “Do you know who I am?” 145 After a wonderful meal with their dinner guests, Gunilla Nilsson and Anne-Marie Grunditz, visiting from Sweden, Mr. Lane and GTE decided to walk back to the hotel. They passed Vicki Lloyd in a phone booth and then met Dana Mellecker who was busy being a burden on society. Scott Kneeland, and Paul Dinsdale then picked them up on their motorcycles and gave them a ride to the hotel. The following day Mr. Lane and GTE had a very hectic schedule. They breakfasted and then set off to Copley Plaza where a pretigious fashion show was being held, the main attraction being Diane MacFarland, the nation’s most sought-after model. There was stiff competition among the top fashion buyers, Colleen Shipman, Sue Callahan, Jo Ann Pryce, Cathy LaCroix, Liz Carlson, Sue Mason, and Missy Masterman, to name a select few. N 1 iooi itch After the show, Mr. Lane and GTE lunched with Jeff Jablonski, one of NASA’s top astronauts. The discussion was too technical for Mr. Lane who suggested they visit a zoo to add some contrast to the trip. They did and they had a very pleasant afternoon with several zoo workers including Diane Borggaard, Anne Hooper, Beth Harding, Steve Warden, Faith Hills, and of course Katrina Kleber who was busy in her quest for all the secrets of lepidoptery. Jenny Parent worked at the zoo also but she was on vacation ice skating. Among the gardens at the zoo, Mr. Lane spotted Mike Rudin under a bunch of carrot plants. It turns out that he was interpreting dreams. When asked why he chose this place of business, Mike answered, “Because all the cabbage patches are taken.” (We’ll call you, Mike.) Mr. Lane and GTE took the subway straight to Boston Garden where they planned to watch a Celtics game. On the T they met Sue Taylor and Denise LaClair, reciting their intense poetry. They were in the midst of another great thinker, Arlene Lanciani, who was playing her flute philosophically while Jeff Frye told her a story. The Celtics were having a great season that year thanks to the excellence of Coach Dan Sioui and trainer Bill Scalzulli. After buying some M M’s from Nicki LaPlante, Mr. Lane and GTE sat with Barbara LeBlanc, Mary Kate O’Neill, and Donna Seeley, all avid Celtics fans. They met Kim Johnson, Kris Osborn, Doug Johnson, and Mark LaChance at the concession stand and decided to go out to a nightclub with them after the game. Ed Reynolds’ awesome band was making an appearance at the nightclub. On the dance floor GTE met Cheryl “Flashdance” Ahearn, Martha Oster, and Lisa O’Rourke. In the meantime Mr. Lane chatted with several ’84 graduates; Stephanie Gay, Julie Campbell, Robin Caputo, Naomi Holder, Jackie Crawford, and Lisa Strand. At the center of attention was Michael Dufault and Brenda George, like right out of Saturday Night Fever. All of a sudden there were screams and great commotion. Laurie Knowles was about to have a baby. Mr. Lane and GTE took h er to the hospital. As they were leaving the nightclub, Mr. Lane thought he heard Christa Stoneham say, “I’ll knit some warm fuzzy sweaters!” Boston Hospital is equipped with an outstanding nursing staff and Laurie was well taken care of by Bonnie Oberg, Pam Peloquin, and Sherri Cook. Also in the Emergency room was Andy Debatis who had overworked himself with too much computer programming and was being taken care of by Susan luanisin, Laurie-Ann Frost, and Marie Lapointe. Com torai Bah, After such a long day, Mr. Lane and GTE slept well, but got up early to take a morning walk through the park. Jen Narcisi and Jeannette Sedgwick jogged by, Jeannette complaining about organizing things. They also saw Kim Scarborough who was taking pictures of Ricky Puffer (or at least of his hair) for TIME magazine. Mr. Lane waved to Kelli Kowaleski and Bruce Mailberg together on a park bench who couldn’t wave back. 146 1 V On their way to the bus stop Mr. Lane and GTE passed a bookstore where Katie Ojerholm’s book about her adventures with Lisa Higgins and Jeannette Cheetham in the Peace Corps in Africa was on sale. The book was so popular that it had been translated into six languages by Kristi Overvold. Cheryl Martin’s new novel wasn’t on the market yet, but it was awaited anxiously. Also, on a lonely shelf stood the newest addition to fantasy fiction, How to Be Like Paul Amons Without a Ph.D., written by, who else, Paul Amons. Mr. Lane and GTE then took a bus to the newest addition to the Boston skyline, the high school Boston Japanese, designed by famous architect Scott Morrisey and built by Steve Milliard ' s construction company (expertly executed by Philip Melanson and Kevin Sheridan). Mr. Lane took GTE on a tour of the new school. Starting off in kindergarten, they sat in on classes taught by Patty Smaltz, Sue Comstock, Debbie Osipov, Donna Laughrea, Michelle Larocque, and Kim Stone. Then they moved on to elementary school. They passed Julie Mastrototaro and Chris Beck in the hall on their way to an art department meeting. Chris told Mr. Lane that Anne Bourgeois, Michelle Friedrich, and Kathy Holm also worked at Boston Japanese, in the special ed. psychology department. In the elementary school they met Ken Emery who was trading comic books with his math students. GTE and Mr. Lane returned to the hotel where they parted company. Mr. Lane had to get back to Wachusett for the annual “Hal’s Kids” telethon for budget funds. But GTE had one more errand before returning to Ttesuchaw. For lightyears people of other galaxies have been admiring the communications network on Earth, SL L (Satellite laser, and light communications), and the Ttesuchawian ambassador was responsible for negotiating a contract with the company to set up direct lines between Earth and his native planet. So GTE took a taxi to the massive SL L building and was greeted by receptionists Robin Costa and Debbie Nelson who turned down the radio. She sent him to Deena Blair’s office and he there met with top executives Dean Austin and Karen Deming. After conferring with chief engineers Steve Ouellette, Ariel Maldonado, and Axel de Spirlet, they had to walk to the accounting department to make final financial arrangements for the deal. Rhonda Gregerman sailed by them on her way to the computer room (next to the Word Processors where Linda Fischer was teaching Cindy McCarthy and Annmarie Becker while Barbra Bulkley looked on). At the accounting department, they were supposed to meet with Melissa Martin, but she was out playing racquetball. They had a joint conference with Chris Burke, Jackie Clark, Chuck Ducharme, and David Lacey. President Blair then took GTE to the advertising department where Patty Dubovick, Abby Twichell, and Dave Smith worked out a campaign (which included Michael Jackson videos) to advertise the new intergalactic communications system. At long last a fatigued GTE had finished his stay on Earth. He was anxious to return to Ttesuhcaw. He had learned much about Earth from Mr. Lane and he even considered it as a second home ... a home he’d soon be able to phone. Into the bathroom I go to wake my face. I return to my room vastly changed — Clean, soapy, slightly perfumed. The aroma of cooked food leads me to the kitchen as if taking me by the hand, and I sit across from a talking bottle of Fragrant, but sour after-shave. Donning a heavy coat I escape to the outdoors in blue arms that smell Wooly, old, and scratchy. The odor of remnant moth balls flies up my nose. The outside air slaps me hard when I step into it — Crisp, cool, thin, but frost sits comfortably on the grass like a cat sits on your lap — Fresh, damp, and sweet. The scent of drying leaves left behind on trees reaches my nose — Bitter and smelling like autumn. I arrive at the bus stop and am engulfed by the bus ’s exhaust Thick, dirty, choking. Carolyn Greis Late to my concert. . . I see our little world through the fog of smoke and dew on my speeding window. 1 have no control of the time now .. . so what if I’m late. You can’t change your time now either. Why does he have to yell? He’s burning. The smoke encompasses his face and weaves its way through my nostrils. Law . . . what does the law really matter? The box of crap . . . postage due. Now who’s the customer, dad, and who’s the dealer? Arlene Lanciani Rain In Acadia Tonight is a poem waiting to be read The sky sinks. The earth drinks, and ! am in my tent. The ground feels the up and down of my stomach as I breathe, like a child returned to her mother after being gone so long. The fish weave in and out of lacy coral reefs. The beavers lay their dams and mark their scent mounds. The other campers speak softly amongst themselves. These things permeate me, like rain sinking into the ground like roots stretching their long fingers into the earth. Sink and Drink. Weave and Breathe — The air is filled with poetry and silent song and all creation gently keeps time. Kathleen Donegan Sept. 1983 Mother’s Eyes I was who I was tonight A life four years past lived through me. I saw myself in a looking glass, young and lost — as I was. Washing my hands and fumbling with plush towels that draped over shower racks. I was who I was tonight. A life four years past lived through me. I saw myself, a woman with blue eyes, stolen from her mother. Waiting to be freed of blue tiled walls and bathroom mirrors that whispered stolen secrets. Amy Varnum The Zipper Clicks Backward 1 think I will throw this pocketbook away next year — I still love the winey red-colored leather (although it probably isn’t leather, at all) But most of the dye has been rubbed off Replaced by cobwebby splotches the color of dried clay Sometimes, the long, skinny shoulder strap wraps around my neck, choking me And people are always catching their foot in it.. . Snapped inside the outer pocket are a few photos, An old locker combination on pink paper: 20 - 2-32 The zipper clicks backward on its track of minute teeth To reveal a silky brown lining And crowded together in the straining belly: An apple-green comb labeled “Unbreakable” A few droplets of lotion in a battered, trial-size bottle Pens that work, if you scrub at them long enough . And a poem that made me feel good Last year, torn and pencil-smudged now In the secret pocket: A virtually unused nail file, cold capsules, a dime All permeated by the faint aroma of a melon-scented pencil The bag twirls, showing a whitish, dragon-shaped streak across the back Reminiscent of acrylic paint that got on my hair and jeans, too I will zip a small, cold apple into the pocketbook for now And it will bump my hip again and again As I move quickly along Julie Kramer 243 aiwa Smile. Since the 1950’s, Mrs. Moulton has invested a great deal of time and personal effort in Wachusett as a whole. Originally a Physical Education instructor and coach, she maintained an incredible 90% winning record over a 10 to 15 year period. Working her way up to Assistant Principal, Mrs. Moulton became instrumental in making Wachusett the multifaceted school it is today. Her position as a disciplinarian never hindered her ability to befriend a great many students she came in contact with. Mrs. Moulton’s strong devotion helped to make Wachusett great, and will long be remembered. ; LIBRABIV -VACHUSETT REGIONAL 01(30 80000 HOLDS! , MASSACHUSETTS 2 As Mrs. Simone Horgan leaves the Wachusett Foreign Language Department, we lose a cherished, much respected member of the faculty. Conversing with students in her native tongue, Mrs. Horgan far surpassed ordinary textbooks in im¬ parting to us authentic French culture. Students often formed circles, watched films of “Toute la Bande”, or gave input on how the class might be improved to everyone’s benefit. Mrs. Horgan was eager to provide help or tutors to those who strug¬ gled, and was genuinely interested in our lives outside the classroom. She celebrated with us during French parties, and left us with open invitations to visit her home in Nice. Although we will miss her, we wish Mrs. Horgan future happiness on the sunny coast of France. orSr ■ e . I C; T A t . . Mrs. Eileen Longden may have left the Math Department, but her patience and kindness will not soon be forgotten. Although she never raised her voice, Mrs. Longden kept con¬ trol by earning her students’ respect. She willingly took the time to explain things and encouraged achievement with rewards of “bonus points”. Discussing student issues and tell¬ ing jokes, Mrs. Longden was a friend as well as a teacher. At Christmas we could always expect time off to sing carols around her tabletop tree. We hope that her future life is as full and perfect as the circles she drew so effortlessly on the blackboard.
