1 iirBWumwcigi ki J 4 br v v wwm j- IfSsas?. fAWUau NgikOKK, MASSACtiUSfiHa We, the class of 1979, the twenty-fifth graduating class of Wachusett Regional High School, have chosen to dedicate our yearbook to Miss Catherine Maynard. We will always remember her for her four years of steadfast loyalty and enthusiasm. This written dedication could never do her justice. She is a caring friend as well as a hard work¬ ing advisor, and we are grateful for the help she has given us. Thank you Miss Maynard 2 I don’t mind where I get taken; The road is calling, today is the day. ' ! I can see it took so long just to realize; I’m much too strong now to compromise. , T - : : It — i It “I I rwsMcn l £ I finally see the dawn arriving 10 I see beyond the road I’m driving Far away and left behind. ■ C- 1 1 I can tell there’s no more time left to criticize, I’ve seen what I couldn’t recognize. 14 But I can e strong SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1979 We all look back on the things you have learned and or the things we have tried to teach over the last few years. Many of us see gaps. There are gaps in areas where adults and employ¬ ees feel you should be knowledgeable (like checkbooks, loans, parenting) but you, having had no immediate need for the information, couldn’t have cared less. I’m sure that schools will return in the near future to con¬ centrating more on what the society feels our younger citizens need in the future and concentrating less on what the young people feel that they need or want now. But in the meantime, your education, broadly speaking, may have significant gaps. You have an immediate reason to be a continuing learner in practical, wordly concerns. The current statistics on overex¬ tended credit, on divorce, and on wife and child beating show this clearly. I can only wish for you that as you increase in maturity, you respect what you don’t know, that you take steps to learn before you leap. Your basic studies here will provide a solid foundation, but you need to continue to build. You stand a far better chance of being in control, of your career, of your finances, of your emotions, and, if it applies, of your marriage and your children — if you plan and build thoughtfully. God love you. Edward P. Yaglou WILLIAM CAREY, Assistant Superintendent ADMINISTRATION DR. EDWARD YAGLOU, Superintendent PETER FARRELLY, Associate Superintendent 18 HAROLD LANE, Principal MICHAEL PREGOT, Assistant Principal BERNARD TREMBLAY, Assistant Principal PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Members of the Class of 1979, A yearbook is a window to the past — a kaleidoscope of per¬ sonalities and events and activities. It is, of course, not a com¬ plete record of your high school years, but if done well, is an entree to a multitude of memories and remembered friend¬ ships. You are a member of the class that closes out the first twenty-five years in the history of your high school. Yours is a special class in many ways! Your record of achievement as a class stands up well with the classes that went before and will be a challenge to those who follow. As with all groups you also are made up of individual achievements and disappointments. My hope for each of you individually is that you will forge for yourselves a life rich in happiness and personal satisfaction. I hope that the years spent at Wachusett will contribute to your future in many pos¬ itive ways and that, as the years pass, your memories of these years will gain in luster and meaning. A yearbook allows us to stand still and look both backwards and forwards! It is my sincere wish that, in your backwards glance, you will remember those who stood beside you — your parents, your teachers, your friends — and that, as you look forward to the future, you will have the kind of memories of the past that will make your future endeavors even more meaningful and productive. My best to all of you in whatever you undertake. Keep in touch. Sincerely, JANE MOULTON, Assistant Principal 19 ENGLISH CALVIN BRANCHE ESTELLE DAVIS JANETNEAL BETTY FAUTEUX ROBERT MILES, Dept. Monogram and lettermen’s sweaters abounded as did bobby sox and calf length skirts. For the boys leather jackets, rolled up blue jeans, and slicked back hair were in. Girls curled their hair and wore their sweaters but¬ toned down the back. Strands of pearls and red lipstick finished the picture. Guys and gals could be seen together after school, and at sock hops in the evening. They did every dance from the bunny hop to the jitterbug. Everyone listened to that crazy new sensation, ROCK AND ROLL. CHANGES. . The school opened! As the 60’s progressed the skirts got shorter and shorter, and the ultimate mini-skirt appeared — one that was barely there. When the Beatles came on the scene, everyone mimicked them. Psychedelic colors and bell-bottoms were the things to wear. Boys began to grow their hair past their ears while girls had theirs cut really short. Hippies were born and everyone wanted to hang loose. Nature’s mighty law is change 146 The 70’s were years of change. Styles came and went quickly — from miniskirts to knee length and midi’s. Psychedelic colors gave way to soft earth tones and the tailored look became loose and baggy, and or a combination of both. Flat shoes gave way to platform shoes and tall skinny heels. Boots walked into the scene, along with jeans and more jeans. Everyone grew their hair long, then some got it cut short. . . and shorter. Some liked it straight, others curly. Perms came back into being, and many afros and crimped heads of hair were seen bobbing around. 150 CHANGES. . . Ten minute break came and went. The dress code was relaxed. Double lunch periods went. Our lives which were once all so neat Are now so unarranged. We must decide on where to go, to work or to school. It’s not an easy choice to make. Our hearts and minds must rule. Our friends all go their different ways. We feel as though we’re lost. But some, we know, we’ll see again No matter what the cost. To keep in touch with all we’ve met Will surely never be. So for the time that we are here A friend, we’ll try to be. The ceremony finally comes. We’re full of laughs and tears. The time we spent together Will be cherished through the years. Kathy Nordquist Time Spent The winds of time have crept into The souls of you and I. Some chill a summer’s morning, Some warm a wintry night. The days we’ve spent enjoying life Are memories kept inside. We sh all not pass as strangers In tomorrow’s world of rhyme. Some slap-happy disc jockey is blowing effervescent bubbles over the air-waves. His voice never breaks its non-stop, hurry-up, pitta-pat. I wonder how he does it on his salary . . . When it’s real late, I get tired of Jerry and the Jerks death-defying, Electric-frying sound. Somebody’s crying through their blue notes and I just don’t give a damn. Give me real music like that little boy played; Banging sticks on an old trash barrel in the rain . . . 166 — C. Berry Sunrise to Sunset “I finally see the dawn arrivin ' I see beyond the road I ' m drivin ' We ' ve been sealed and secluded From the horizons of life. In the darkness of our youth. In the laws of conformity — But why? We are the leaders now — And they have to stop Forcing us to believe That we must follow them. We are the sunrise. Rushing gloriously from the depth of the night. In the victorious colors. Brilliant and fresh. In our pinks, melons, and yellows. As our beams illuminate the earth To guide the lives of the living. But they — They are the sunset Melting and fading away. Into the cloudy blue-gray mystery. Deep and mellowed In their reds, oranges, and golds. As their dying rays Drip into the sea And are washed away. Sue Abbott T 170 by Sue Veaudry Here I am sitting at a square desk in a square room with a square floor covered with square tiles trying to copy your unemotional words and I glance out the square window and watch the square trucks bounce by and wonder if could I be a square myself? I turn away and look at my square paper and try to express myself with a round pencil. 173 Renaissance It’s now a month since I’ve been there, It seems longer though; Changes seem to slowly paint themselves over me But they come quietly, so it doesn’t matter. Yesterday the leaves fell off the trees The end has come whispering her solitude and forebode. Time is the revelation Faith is the key to the revelation Revelation is the key to the end. It’s now been a month since I’ve remembered It seems much shorter. Changes have been painted and talked up in memory’s museum, To sit on shadowy walls Waiting for memories to march through Peering at the renaissance of time gone by. H. Howard Growing Up It ain’t easy, ya know, when you got so many people trying to shape you, mold you, and make you and you just want to furl your sails, and let the current take you. It ain’t easy when they push you down and step on you, cut your wings and tether you. They say they could never understand you but who said they were expected to? It ain’t easy. I keep looking ahead hoping they’ll open the cage and let me fly, but it ain’t gonna be that easy. C. Messier 175 ) me i mes There ' s such exce11 ent peopie amund- cSueVi good friends. Corcoran To Dave he was the greatest I loved him and still do No one at all could take his place To share good times Teaching one another right from wrong He taught me how to be a young lady How to kiss and act around others And all he said was . .. To be yourself That’s exactly how he was I always admired him He had a good head on his shoulders Always happy, cheerful For one thing you can never be in a bad mood around him He’d make you laugh and cry at the same time Laugh at the times we had And to cry that he’s gone. Beth Corcoran So full of life and joy, Dave always had a smile on his face. He loved the outdoors and used to tell me About his canoe weekends and his traveling Cross country to California. Always a friend In need; willing to sit for hours at a time Just listening at what you had to say or give A lending shoulder when you needed advice or Cheering up. Always there when you needed him — Yet never asking anything in return — except For happiness — happiness around everyone. God gave this kindness to Dave and he spread It among his friends. In memory of you Dave — You’re the kind of friend everyone wishes they had. I’ll never forget the good times — In memory of you. 46 1961-1979 JMP SUSAN PALADINO 127 Woodridge Road Holden A man to be greatly good must imagine intensely, must put himself in the place of others ... family ... friends ...
