I ' ,v-.5 «« Si£iiai£ ' - - ?m m To express our gratitude and appreciation for the devotion which Mr. Groom has given to our class, the seniors of 1978 have decided to dedicate this yearbook to him. A man of enthusiasm and optimism, Mr. Groom displayed qualities which distinguish him as a dedicated counselor. Out-going, friendly, understanding, and encouraging, Mr. Groom deserves much greater thanks than can be expressed through this dedication. Thank you Mr. Groom for doing all you have for us. Wm-; 2 . I’ve been thinkin’ ’bout my life’s time, All the things I’ve done and how it’s been. And I can’t help believin’ in my own mind I know I’m going to hate to see it end . . . . . . Talk of poems, prayers, and promises And things that we believe in; 6 How sweet it is to love someone How right it is to care — 7 And what about our dreams And all the memories we share . . . The changes somehow frighten me 10 I INISTRATION DR. EDWARD YAGLOU, Superintendent SUPERINTEN DENT’S MESSAGE Edward P. Yaglou If any one of you believes that, having completed high school, you have learned all that you need to know, then I would argue long and hard with you. Most people who have dealt with people any length of time have concluded that the “know-it-all” is usually the most ignorant person in the crowd. Why do we human beings, especially we males, find it so hard to admit that there is something — in all of this vast and complex universe — that we don’t know? The educated and confident person should be able to admit to being ignorant about many things. Are you, even as you accept compliments upon graduation, a big enough person to ask, as you first enter a library or a registry of deeds or a city hall or a company headquarters, “Can you help me? This is my first visit here. Could you explain how the sys¬ tem works?” I contend that such questions are far more intelligent than pretending to know. I would suggest that one aspect of maturity is knowing what we don ' t know, and trying to learn more about it. Best wishes to you as continuing self-learners throughout a lifetime. FORREST GILMORE, Director of Special Education PETER FARRELLY, Associate Superintendent 18 HAROLD M. LANE, Principal BERNARD TREMBLAY, Assistant Principal PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Members of the Class of 1978: It is with a mixture of pride, happiness, and a tinge of sadness that I write this message to you. Pride because I have followed the growth of the class of 1978 from somewhat frightened freshmen through the testing sophomore and junior years and finally to the leadership role of seniors. That you have grown in stature and in a sense of responsibility to yourselves is an enormous source of pride to me and to the school. Happiness, because your graduation signals the accomplishment of having succeeded through the first twelve years of schooling and por¬ tends the continuation of a lifelong quest for knowledge whether it be in a formal or informal sense. And sadness because I know that my contact with many of you will probably be confined to an occasional look back at this, your high school yearbook. For this book can serve as your eyes to the past — to what I hope has been, on balance, a happy and productive period of your lives. My best to each and every one of you! My hopes that you attain whatever station in life you aspire to and that you will continue to grow in wisdom and mind as the years slip by. I shall keep this book as at least a partial memory of the years we spent together and I do hope that our paths will touch in the years to come. Keep in touch. Very truly yours. The ocean tickles my toes Ebbing back persuading me to follow. Beyond the line of breaking waves I see familiar, drunken faces bobbing in the surf Who’ve been seduced by the gentle undertow. I like the solid ground beneath me. Sand hard and soft where I am free and my actions are my own But never as free as the soaring seagulls. Still I won’t be hypnotized by its coaxing power However, that may be impossible for even the gulls bend down to the sea. Fade and fade on endlessly Times are passing with ease, It’s time we hit the road . . . Kathy Loftus 190 A Blade of Grass Like the single blade of grass In the open desert field I stand up alone, starting new and becoming unsealed. I am fresh and green Only small and lean But I stretch out my roots And shake off my boots For I know I will make it, I am here to stay Come on everybody, this is my big day. Well things are not right, The sun is high and it shines bright. I am so tired and dry I think fate has it, that I should die. But on the horizon, I see the shadow of hope. A cloud has come to save me, I no longer need to grope. This cloud, it brings water, and it is water I need. For if you remember, I was once just a seed. Jeff Clarke 191 I do my thing, and you do your thing. I am not in this world to live up to your expectations And you are not in this world to live up to mine. You are you and I am I, And if by chance we find each other, It’s beautiful. If not, it can’t be helped. Fredrick S.
