SUPERINTENDENT ' S MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1977 Your class is leaving Wachusett at the end of an era in American education - the era of innovation, relevance, and options. The combination of a sagging economy and sagging scores on national tests of academic performance have caused the citizenry to demand Back to basics, a reemphasis on the 3 R s. We are thankful that the pendulum has not swung so wildly at Wachusett; we have been more conservative than many systems, and we have far less distance to go back to basics. I hope that as you continue your education - for you all will do that, whether it be in a school or on a job, - you will try to achieve those attributes which have always marked the well- read, educated (though maybe not schooled) person: the ability to read’and write and speak the English language clearly and effectively; a global viewpoint extending beyond your own locale and time, including the ability to put yourself in the other person ' s shoes, to see how he or she perceives the situation convictions concerning current moral issues; the habit of treating others as you would have them treat you; and finally some particular knowledge or skill which is necessary and in demand, which enables you to earn your own way, if not produce your own food and shelter. Even as we continually reevaluate how well we have served you, we hope we have done well by you, and we wish you well. Edward p y. DR. EDWARD YAGLOU, Superintendent FORREST GILMORE, Director of Special Educa¬ tion PETER FARRELLY, Associate Superintendent DAVID JOHNSON, Business Manager WILLIAM CAREY, Assistant Superintendent jstssm. •a Superintendent’s Secretarial Staff 4
