; VOL. 6, NO. 6 HOLDEN, MASSACHUSETTS PRINTED BY WACHUSETT PRESS MAY, 1975 SENIORS VISIT PUTNAM Seniors from Mrs. Plaza ' s Psy¬ chology II classes visited the Dempsey Center in Putnam, Connecticut on March 24 and 25. Dempsey, a modern institu¬ tion for the mentally retarded, succeeds in changing the morbid view that an institution is a place for the unwanted, and helpless. The facilities at Dempsey are the best and the student-teacher ratio (8 to 1) makes for a close personal relationships between the pupils and teachers. The staff at Dempsey hold the highest regard for those they work with. The mentally retarded are people, human beings with feelings and emotions just like ourselves; the people at Dempsey realize this fact and work to have other people come to the same conclusion. Wachusett seniors left Dempsey feeling happy and hopeful - happy at what is being done to help the mentally • retarded. LOOK BACK Despite a low interest in Greaser Day and a heavy snowfall, atten¬ dance was good at the Spanish National Honor Society ' s nostalgic evening, March 19. The greasers heard many golden oldies by the many golden greats of the ' 50’s. SPIRIT OF ' 76 Wachusett’s Bicentennial events took place on Culture Day, Conflict Day and Consolidation Day beginning April 16. From movies on life in Williamsburg to real-life revolutionists appropriately represented in costumes by several teachers the program was both educational and fun. Patriotic blood was also shed for the Red Cross blood drive. Teachers gave freely of their time as guest instructors, and students joined in what appeared to be interest and certainly cooperation. On April 18 Mr. Howard Greis conducted a panel in the auditorium consisting of U. S. Representative Edward Boland: State Sonator Robert Hall; State Representative Edward Harrington; Holden Town Manager William Kennedy; WTAG News Director Donald Richards; Father Louis Dionne, past president of Assumption College and a man who spent several years in the Soviet Union; Mr. Joseph Grib- ouski and Prof. Stanley Gaunt, experts on food supply and men knowledge¬ able about its implications on the Third World. The panel discussed America’s past and its future direc¬ tions. SOPHOMORES ENTERTAINED Wachusett sophomores who study Tennessee Williams’ GLASS MENA¬ GERIE were fortunate that the “Theatre-in-the-CIassroom” perform ers of the Worcester Children’s Theatre were able to come twice to Wachusett Regional High School: on April 1 and again on April 8. These students were entertained by the gentleman caller” scene from the Williams play. Since Wachu¬ sett’s only obligation was to provide the reasonable facsimile of a couch, Wachusett is particularly g ateful for this opportunity for many of its sophomore English st dents. BLOOD NEEDED Massachusetts uses npproximately 1,300 pints of blood ear. New techniques have made it ?ble to separate the various blood ompo- nents so that each is used as ;oecifi- y needed for each type of pat- ier . Thus, each pint of blood is used for three different patients--or a total of more than 3,000 patients a day.
